  • Brilliant! Goosebumps, every single time!

  • At 4:00, in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, is that Jim Dale??

  • I'm a huge GG fan, but I do not like Christine Ebersol's interpretation at all -

  • This is totally brilliant... I loved the original documentary...and I think this is very true to the spirit of it.. Great lyrics, great tunes fantastic understated performance...I love it!!!! witty witty witty....

  • "It's a mean nasty Republican town" (cut to unamused Republicans) haha

  • I feel sad that Little Edie never found true love, she had so much to give, such enthusiasm, vitality and an enchantingly childlike joix de vivre which was never satiated. By the time her mother died, she'd developed such a distrust and cautious approach that she continued to distance herself from most people, which is a real shame.

These women weren't crazy at all, just non-conforming eccentrics.

  • Wow - I've put off watching this for a while; I was afraid they'd ruin the amazing movie and characteurize the two Edie's, but I can't believe how great Christine is.

  • I would actually love to see Kristin Chenoweth play Little Edie!

  • WLKCONSULTING: The difference is this. This family lived in a very well appointed mansion, was well educated, & had been the toast of society in the Hamptons before they fell into ruin--you can't really make that comparison fairly. The journey is completely different...besides, "Precious," released recently, while not exactly a musical, has dance numbers when Precious goes into her mind to escape her life in Harlem...and THAT is a hit movie. I find the characters in both are utterly fascinating.

  • When we see crazy white people living in filth, you call it eccentric and make a musical about it. Society sees black people living like this and they are called crack heads. The police are called and the only music you hear is the theme song to COPS

  • White Privilege - Tim Wise

  • Very true, WLKCONSULTING. But even If this musical was about an eccentric black or white person's "mind escape" to Harlem or where ever - and who didn't come from the type of background "Little Edie" came from - do you think people would come and see this?

  • @WLKCONSULTING The reason these women were so unique was because they came from a wealthy, socially elite background which they rebelled against, you cannot compare their story with any other and your attempt to play the 'race card' is inappropriate and cheap.

  • i'm hooked

  • I saw the play in Boston a few months ago. It was quite good. Would love to see the musical. The movie was great also, I think drew should have picked up a prize for her performance.

  • She just did! golden Globes! YAY!

  • SHE WAS SO EXCITED!!! it made me happy. :D

  • "...even though I won a Tony award for Best Actress in a Musical, business has been very slow. In fact: nonexistent. We're gone! Mary Louise Wilson, who plays my mother warned me about doing obscure and intellectual shows like 'Grey Gardens'-- she wanted me to revive 'Mame.' We had quite a fight."

  • whats a sober k

  • A sobriquet is a nickname or a fancy name, sometimes assumed, but often given by another.

  • She even sounds like Edie!

    What a genius!

  • So clever. Bravo!

  • I saw this in NYC and it was really fantastic. Totally unlike any musical I've seen. Christine Ebersole was wonderful. If you have seen the whole show with her in it you have some idea the magnitude of the the role. This is only a small piece.

  • Imagine if Edie got a hold of Multiples...those pants, shirts head band skirt things...from the 80's

  • wonderful musical... lucky to have a been a part of a nyc audience..

  • This sounds like generic musical stuff.

  • You have to admit that the lyrics are very clever, though.

  • It wasn't that she was insane or crazy. She was "an acquired taste" just like her mother said in the documentary. She was ecclectic and wonderful. I love it. Drew Barrymore does great in the movie.

  • Little Edie traveled and passed away in Bal Harbour Florida, whether she was sane or not doesnt matter any more, Im glad to see the hbo movie its perfect for mothers day. I dont know if I feel terrible or glad either way Im grateful to see two people who loved each other so much they actually didnt need anybody else, I wiish life was that simple.

  • i just loved the HBO movie, i thought drew berrymore and jessica lang were pitch-perfect in their roles.

  • I'm so hurt to think that Big and Lil Edie died and after the documentary and everything, they didn't even give them any money let alone visit them. And till this day they are still making money off their story yet they died in poverty. SO SAD

  • little edie didn't die in poverty. she got a LOT of money from the sale of grey gardens after her mother died. so she lived out the end of her life quite happy.

  • Also, whether she was mentally ill or not is debatable, if you study them.

  • Both the Edies would have LOVED the musical. YOu have to see the documentary and read about them to understand that.

  • No one is making fun of Edie. WAKE UP!! This is an homage. Go read the books and see how both the Edie's welcomed the documentary film into their lives. They loved the exposure. The documentary, the film and the musical celebrate their artistic natures. Don't be stupid.

  • You people know NOTHING about musicals. Just because it's a musical doesn't mean the story is used for laughs, there are plenty of genuinely tragic moments in the show. Even this number isn't MAINLY about laughs, as much as about Edie's personality and fashion sense.

  • My GOd wtf is wrong with you people

YOU can't make a musical out of a fantastic documentary like gray gardens. NOT FUNNY at all! i can't believe this was done. who ever did this is sick and stupid.

  • Everyone calm down about people laughing, I don't think everyone in the audience understands that Edie had a mental illness, etc, etc. And you can't say everything is tragic, you can't look at things so dismally, you have to laugh sometimes.

  • THIS IS DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!! How could someone make fun of this? Whoever wrote this ridiculous musical is sick minded. lil Edie is a tragic woman who was cheated of a wonderful life. I cannot believe that they would do this to her, as if her mother didnt do enough to hurt her....

  • if you saw the whole show you would know it was not making fun of her

  • i still dont agree with it. I mean i know that you should take some things with a grain of salt..but her story really touched me and i feel really sorry for her.

  • Little Edie was absolutely thrilled that they were making her life story into a musical. She wrote about it.

  • Ebersol's ass is too big for the role of Little Edie, as she was fit and petite. This is all very sick nonetheless. Let's all laugh at the crazies - yeah, reeeel funny not.,

  • I agree. Mental illness is not something campy or funny like the NY freak theater world seems to think. How sick and exploitive.

  • Little Edie was a tragic character, it's horrible people laugh at her like this

  • It is an amazing, sad, entertaining story. The best broadway shows are basted on unfortunate situations.....

  • little edie was so tragic her mother ruined her life, but she let her mother do it

  • wow. this is just mean.

  • I agree it is very mean these people are making a lot of money out of her life, there vultures!

  • She sounds just like Little Edie!!!

  • i really didnt like this. i feel bad for luittle edie. but i guews people will make fun of unqie individuals

  • I know what you mean...I don't know how I feel a bout them turning "Little Edie" into a song/comedic act especially since she may or may not have had mental problems....but maybe little edie would be flattered by this?? who knows.

  • crazed... based on real life instability, we're all a step or two away from that, I guarantee you

  • How funny ....I loved this ....

  • Hope the Beales' will find peace. They were only human and had more dignity than any interpretation of their lives could ever hope to offer.

  • its a shame little edies not getting royaltys on this..the jokes and quips are little edies own words! rip miss farmington!

  • Little Edie is no longer.

  • She looks like she is so annoyed. Her Tony performance was better

  • Yeah i thought so too.

  • oh my gosh! i need to see this show..

  • omg...terrible. the real thing shits on this.

  • Why does she have to break out in song? This is from a MUSICAL. That's what people in musicals do.

  • considering how much they loved music and singing, I think it makes complete sense that this is a musical.

  • I Love it!

  • @piratejayftl YOU SAID IT my friend. People have no imagination.

  • Dummy: It's a musical. I HATE musicals, however, this (and the other bits I have withdrawn from this site) captures more dialogue and spirit from the Maysles doc than I ever dreamed possible. I, for one, am delighted. Let's just hope that the Hollywood version DOAs.

  • what a flawless actress...she's so real

  • Shut up. It actually sounds a lot like her... o.o

  • living on long island, i can tell you that's exactly what we sound like

  • @machinegunvibrato best comment ever on YouTube.

  • You are SO wrong. She is perfect.

  • fucking AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I wish this was still showing in NY. Waa.

  • staggering

  • This reminds me of Acorn Antiques. Why?

  • lovelove this song.

  • Her performance is SPOT ON, lol!

  • Pure genius. Christine Ebersole is the queen of Broadway.

  • Much like the real character the show is based on, a little of this goes a long way.

  • She's exquisit.

  • you and me both!! Lets hope!!

  • Does anyone know if Grey Gardens is coming back on Broadway? I never got a chance to see it and I really want too!!!!!

  • Fabulous, I saw this on Broadway twice and can't wait for it to open in London, Christine ebersole is awesome

  • In all honesty....NO ONE will ever be able to do this justice as she did. WONDERFUL!

  • The guy taht intoduces is that the guy who was the original mum in Hairspray?

  • no hun thats the guys on ms. doubtfire..... your thinking of divine... she died a while back... they buried the queen in a baby grand piano

  • oh it sounds just like her...

  • You mean Harvey Fierstien. Yes, he was the original Edna Turnblad in the Broadway musical of Hairspray, althouth sainstskittles is right in saying that Divine was Edna in the original 1980s movie and that Harvey Fierstein was in 'Mrs. Doubtfire'.

  • Outstanding...we are all so close to the edge of 'crazy'.

  • i know her she has three kids maymay erin elighe

  • have to admit I was a little upset to hear this was going to broadway as I thought there was NO WAY they could do it justice ! What a pleasent shock that they pulled it off !

  • Oh Christine...she's amazing but she was a total bitch to work with when this project was in development. And Scott FRANCO!!! LOVE HIM!!! That man is a GOD at the piano!

  • Woops, Frankel*

  • were you involved with the workshop?

  • gotta love ms. ebersol. god, i wanna be her when i grow up!

  • what accent is that?

  • Long Island. And it is spot on to the film.

  • beautiful voice, don't i dont understand the words.. :$ she speaks to... to... how do you say that? understandable?

  • She's so amazing.

  • sucked? hopefully more of your life is continually stolen throughout the day. this was excellent singing.

  • this documentary is awesome.

  • the voice is spot on

  • I had the priveledge of seeing Christine Ebersole and Company perform Grey Gardens twice. What an awesome experience. It was said by one admirer that a short run by an awesome cast leaves priveledged people who have seen the art of theater before their eyes, and I am one of them in seeing Grey Gardens.

  • I totally agree.........."MAGNIFIOCENT" is a better word. N'es pas?

  • I saw this a few days ago in NYC and she is AMAZING! She deserved the Tony for sure.

  • Sondheim would be proud.

  • Sondheim didn't write this.

  • sadly

  • SO????

    perhaps he wished he had!

  • Dis iz funny! William Sledd was right...i should c dis b4 it ends

    ♥ PAMELLA ♥

I once got arrested(not for wearing Red-shoes on a Thursday)for making a WRONG turn no less!

East Hampton is a MEAN Nasty town........

-And the cops are TOTAL dickheads!

  • The transition she makes from Big Edie and Little Edie is amazing.

  • This woman is freakin awesome!!!! Love it!

    "Da Da Da Da Duuum"

  • Haha I love this!!! "It's a mean nasty republican town." Christine kills me. She is brillant!

  • Chrisine so sounds like "Little Edie" with her speaking voice. She deserved the Tony for her performance in this show! Congrats Christine!

  • "i mean do you know that, they can get you for almost anything. its a mean nasty republican town"

lol. i was laughing so hard at this

  • Christine deserved that Tony!!! I saw her on Broadway in Grey Gardens, and she was hysterical!!!

  • haha yeah she did. I thought she was BRiLLIANT!

I wanna go see it so bad!

  • She did really great. SO funny.

  • this is exactly what she did at the tony`s. i could`ve sworn this was that performance.

  • i love this show!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes she did, and she was fabulous!

  • SHE WON!!!!!!!

  • It's rare that tere's real acting (which means living it) in musicals. It's usually this heightend 'let's break into song and dance' bullshit.

  • This actually makes the movie more understandable.

  • Holy Crap! Christine Ebersole totally nailed Little Edie on the head. She is fabulous.

  • She's a hoot!

  • I JUST saw the show 2 days ago! Christine WIN the TONY!!!

  • OH MY GOD!

I love Christine Ebersole...I swear, I love you, Laura Bell Bundy, but if you win the Tony over her I'll send you awful hate mail! (Totally kidding. There will be no hate mail, but I'll be disappointed.)

  • Oh, how i wish I lived in NY. I have long loved the documentary and Ebersole looks and sounds PERFECT here. I'll be watching the Tony's. Best of luck to her and the whole team behind the show.

  • i luv Christine!! this is 1 of my fave songs from the show!!

  • My heavens, she is so darned wonderful!!!

  • UNBELIEVABLE !!!!

  • I am a man who loves to wear Pantyhose...

GenderRebelsUnite RylanBlu click now very talented

  • omg that man at the begginig...where have i heard that voice before?! lol

    X!

  • Harvey Firestein..he was the original Edna in hairspray and was in A LOT!!!

  • A Wonderful moment in my life revisited , a precious journey down memory lane! All the Best, Jerry

  • her accent is too New York

  • um... Little Edie is a born and bred Long Island girl. What's your point?

  • her accent is dead on with the documentary, exactly how edie spoke.

  • She is breathtakingly brilliant--just amazing.

  • Staggering! Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson make GREY GARDENS the triumph of the Broadway season. If you haven't seen it: GO!!!

  • too good to believe!!!!!!!!

  • If I dont get too NY, they better send the tour too San Francisco.

  • In my 25 years of theater-going, it's just the most astonishing performance I've ever seen.

  • I saw the show on March 16,2007 and Christine Ebersoel's performance was fabulous.

  • Pure genius!

  • The woman is brilliant. Christine Ebersole wins at life.

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • If this woman does not win a TONY, it will" the most digusting atrocious thing ever to happen in America."

  • I re-visited the Grey Gardens DVD yesterday. I think the beauty of Christine's performance is that she didn't try to impersonate or mimic Little Edie in every respect (her speaking voice is fairly different), but nevertheless perfectly captures her spirit.

  • little Edie Rules!

  • I am soooo hearing this again...

    and again...

    and again...

    and again...

    and this is still fun!

    And again!!!

  • Just watch the documentary. This is naff.

  • "Naff"? I'm assuming you are British and have not had the joy of seeing this. Ms. Eberseole's performance is anything but "naff."

  • I recently saw Grey Gardens on Broadway after being a fan of the documentary. She is pure brilliance everyone should see the show:)

  • I sat in the front row and saw it last Sunday afternoon. I was blown away. and YES she will win the Tony. This is the best ORIGINAL musical theatre to come around in years where all we see are Disney movies to the stage and the old tried and true in revival. The producers took a gamble on this won and won big. Look for it at the TONYS this year to sweep as it should.

  • BRILLIANT

  • Fantastic. Saw the Broadway show this week and can't stop listening to the soundtrack, re-watching the film, and looking on youtube for videos. Best theater experience I've had since original Sweeney Todd.

  • god fantastic,,little edie back from the grave..ebersol is going to win the tony...really good

  • Actually in the documentary scene upon which this number is based, little Edie is wearing all black. Don't worry, she also has a number with the American flag in which she is decked out in red. Both Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson as Big Edie are scary good!

  • Like nickbigd said, the scene in the film where Little Edie is describing her "revolutionary costume" she wears an ensemble similar to what Ebersole is seen wearing in this clip. However, it's a dark brown color, not black.

  • The accent is a little off (too tight, and the medial R's are too strong), but the cadence is dead on. But why doesn't she wear a bright scarf? I haven't seen the production but little Edie always wore bright scarves.

  • Actually in the documentary scene upon which this number is based, little Edie is wearing all black. Don't worry, she also has a number with the American flag in which she is decked out in red. Both Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson as Big Edie are scary good!

  • my my aren't we the expert!

  • I'm goin Friday, (day two)!!!

  • un-friggin-believable.

i would give anything for someone to post some bootlegs from this show.
