@xXZ3keSt4rXx there is no way this pilot had ANY control of this aircraft. at those speeds the plane pitched up so violently that I am AMAZED that it didn't brake up entirely in flight. There have been some images released showing the fuselage of the airplane crumpling like a tin can under the stress. There are also images of the pilot not in his seat, we may never know if it was because the 10+ gs shoved him into the seat or the seat mounts broke.

the tab tore off from an elevator on the horizontal stabilator... as it fell off, he could no longer physically control the large elevator due to excessive wind resistance to overcome... - the smaller tab allows a pilot to move the elevators easily... so suddenly the plane climbs out of control, the engine stalled, then the weight of the engine section caused the plane to nose dive like a rock and crash... he had little chance to do anything... a mechanical failure...

The coldness of some comments I've seen on these threads are appalling. Jimmy Leeward, and many others, race these planes because this is their passion. Along with many spectators which share that passion. Just as some folk's passion is football, or baseball, or NASCAR, whatever. Is it potentially dangerous, HELL YES, is it thrilling and exciting to watch , no doubt. The pilots know the risks, the spectators understand the risks. These people are following a passion, simple as that.

As mentioned in many articles about this event, Reno has had an excellent safety record regarding spectators, pilots killed, yes, it is the nature of the beast. The race line Jimmy was on was listed as 1500 ft(500m) from the spectators. I wouldn't condemn the sport, just move the folks back some more, keep them off the flightline.
