  • Shit like this terrifies me. No matter how conservatively I dress, how many precautions I take or weapons I carry, there are people out there perfectly willing to sexually assault me. What can any woman do when there is a horde of men ripping her clothes off? It was in broad daylight and in public, goes to show you that it can happen anywhere.

I don't know where we can start, but our culture needs to be redefined so that women are no longer seen as objects by the media and by so many people.

  • its one thing to spray the women with booze, but its another to smack them and rip off their clothes. Its not even arousing.

  • I dont disagree with whatever is said on the video..

the whole point is how the music industry is portraying women & hw its actually happening in real life. Such a shame

You think the women in the music videos enjoy what they are doing? Im sure they are doing it for the money and regretting it, or maybe the soul-less ones are actually loving it. I dont know..but it is then happening in the real world.. it was disgusting to see men rip off the girls clothes in broad daylight infront of so many!

  • then don't turn on your fucking tv

  • People should be held accountable, lawbreakers punished, sexual assault of any degree should carry a weight and society a willingness to condemn the guilty instead of letting them go free and encourage futher crimes.

  • @argophontes I don't care what a women is wearing whether it be a low cut shirt or a skirt, there is no excuse for ripping off her clothes.

  • @carriecage I never said there was an excuse. What I said is that the men who do this don't hide the fact that they will. If you put yourself in a cage with a lion that's already killed a person before, why would you expect to not be attacked?

  • The fact that this was voted down so much just proves that people aren't reading past the first sentence. I never in any way, shape, or form tried to justify what happened here. I said that these men are part of a culture that tolerates this kind of crap, and that a woman who puts herself in that situation shouldn't be shocked by it. At no point did I blame her for anything.

  • @argophontes Or perhaps we are reading and still disagreeing with the disgusting sentiment you're putting forth?

  • @Otana I hope people think it's disgusting, because it is. It also happens to be true.

  • somebody else left a great comment a couple pages before mine about the true problem being "lust" & i wholeheartedly agree. I know alot of people aren't religious in part because religion has become perverted in so many different ways and in part because our culture/media is so anti- GOD&community, and pro- individualism&self-idoltry. but if everyone lived by the ten commandments and avoided the 7 deadly sins the world would be PERFECT. there is no denying that FACT

    GODBLESS

  • lets just hope the men were sent to jail

and had some real hard man

    give them the same treatment

  • @icon200 I know what you're saying but it's still justifying rape, which is never acceptable. Honestly it says something about the society we live in that the threat of prison rape is kept alive as a deterrent, just another useful tool

What's terrifying is when you realise that mob just sprung up - a few people started assaulting women, and others saw it and didn't say 'what the hell are you doing' - they joined in. There are enough pro-assault men in society to make spontaneous mobs happen

  • Makes me a shame of being latino and breaks my heart so much. This should not be allowed at all. All those men should be put to jail, and all those music videos and rappers should also be charged for promoting this type of behavior. Its sickening, truly sickening!

  • this is gut wrenching

  • mainstream heterosexuality IS RAPE!!!!!! but its normalized so we shouldnt b surprised when conservatives want to redefine rape in order to take away funding 4 planned parenthood

  • and this is why i don't try to be feminine.

all i feel when i watch this is pure hatred. and shame. shame that our society, and our culture thinks this is all okay.

  • And those statistics are what make me carry a knife around.

  • The only real man in that video was the one protecting the girl towards the end. Pathetic. >_>

  • This brought tears to my eyes to see this. Tears of anger, hurt, and betrayal. I consider myself a very strong and respectable woman, but when I see things like this that happen everyday, I can't help but feel the pain of those who are harassed everyday. Because no matter how well I present myself, to someone out there I'll be no more than just a "good fuck"

  • Parents must educate their kids about self respect, decency and love for both boys and girls. Boys need to be taught how to treat a Lady and behave like gentlemen, and girls to look and dress like ladies rather than temptresses. We've been teaching our kids in school that we come from animals have taught them that they are no better than animals and thus behave in that manner.

  • @ssleidl No. That is fucked up and the other extreme on the scale. There should be a middle ground, where no one is forced to dress a certain way, and people are held accountable for assaulting another person.

  • My teacher showed the class this video and everybody was silent afterwards..it's so sad..i almost cried.

  • @msr18924 our class had the same reaction when we looked at it..

  • So many things that are "wrong" with our culture can be traced back to Television's influence on us.

    Blow Up Your TV!!

  • Great vid. Goes right along with the "Killing Us Softly" series. We have to stop drawing the line at rape. The line was really crossed the moment a guy decided that a women was an object instead of a person. The real problem is lust, reducing women to sexual gratification, and no government or law stop this. But we can ourselves. It's going to take all of us working together to push back and encourage respect between the sexes. Deny sexualization. Demand respect and true love.

  • @je5752 Good point. But what I'm really objecting to is the fact that there's so much emphasis placed on what women need to do to protect themselves, instead of addressing the violence/the perpetrator. If I take all the necessary precautions (never leave my drink unattended, carry a weapon, wear one of those Rape-aXe things, dress in a way that isn't provocative, etc), I might feel more secure, but it is a false security and it conveniently leaves out the perpetrator of the violence aimed at me.

  • @EmpressJudge13 Wow... very, very good argument, extremely true. Very impressive.

  • @thewickedzirenita Thank you. I just don't think a "prevention-only" method of safety works. Take street harassment: Women across the board will tell you it isn't about wearing hooker-heels and a red tube dress vs. ratty sweatpants and a ponytail. Either way she can be harassed and often is. So rather than quibbling about hemlines & cleavage, why not address the sense of entitlement that drives men to act in these ways? Why not stop pretending that rape happens between women and shadowy figures?

  • It's shit like that that makes me not want to leave the house without a taser or gun. Next person to put their hands on me or any other girl in this manner is getting either a shock or a busted kneecap!

  • im hot

  • We watched this in my Psych of Gender class, it is unreal. Realy just blew my mind, and kind of made me sick for objectifying women. The media sends this message that women are just our sexual playthings. It makes you angry that this kind of mentality is implanted into childrens' minds. I really think that everyone needs to see this. Real MEN don't treat women like shit. Stop rape/sexual harassment. Women have thoughts, feelings, hopes, dreams and deserve better than our society provides.

  • @peerpressure1999 It has been like this for centuries, and in the middle-ages and renaissance men have been even been afraid of women because of this.

  • i hear the ending of this is supposed to be really good but i can't find it anywhere. does anyone know what happens?

  • I tried to say something reasonable on this thread a while back. It got shot down and buried. This is just another template for neurotic sexual politics.

  • the world's fucked anyway

  • I would like to say to any man who feels like he has the right to comment, you don't. What do you actually know? You think the only women who get raped or harassed are the sexy ones who dress provocatively, get "shit faced", walk home late at night, or the like? no! I tell you, I am overweight, and i always wear jeans, t-shirts and a hoodie and i can come home at 6:00, go out at 3 in the afternoon and i will and have been followed home or followed around and hit on and groped in the street.

  • Unlike dogs, men (supposedly) can control their impulses, follow lines of logic, understand repercussions, and have a sense of empathy.

And honestly, how would you react if women all of a sudden stopped living up to your expectations of sexiness/attractiveness? It's funny because men impose these standards and then blame women for looking the way they do because they are supposedly inviting rape.

    You are a moron.

  • the rape issue is not the woman's fault, let's make that clear. But, for example, if a person was a criminal and they see that you are wearing expensive jewelry while flashing a big roll of money, compared to others around you who may not be so flashy, you just might become a target. same thing applies to the rape issue. Now, I'm not saying that any girl who dresses provocatively, or gets drunk to the point of excess deserves to get raped.

  • *bashes head against desk*

Let me put it this way...

And I'll use small words so perhaps you will understand.

I am not a dude... FIRSTLY. Secondly I am a woman who has ALSO been a victim of sexual assault that occurred WHILST I was "shit faced."

I don't CARE about my condition at the time. Anybody who would dare to suggest that I take ANY of the blame in that disgusting person's actions is furthering a stereotype that I some how "asked for it." A response I have had too many times.

  • Exactly. Does someone deserve to die in a car accident because they got off work late and it was Saturday night?

Shouldn't they KNOW they shouldn't be driving that late when they know there's gonna be drunk drivers on the road?

Also, why are they driving that shitty hatchback when they should've been driving an SUV that would better protect them in a crash?

Clearly, at least some of the blame should be on the hard-working guy trying to make ends meet. It can't all be the drunk driver's fault.

  • 3:09-3:13 glad she got in a punch or two

    cowardly jerks

  • i don't normally agree with media panics, but without wanting to sounds like a feminist i really do thinks boys get influenced by how music video objectify women. that means they can then think it is ok to disrespect them in real life. anyway i thought notting hill carnival was bad, puerto rican pride parade is even worse.

  • why would you not want to sound like a feminist? being a feminist is a very powerful and wonderful thing.

  • @melhoney89

that you don't want to sound like a feminist is really because those boys have succeeded in preventing more women from becoming a feminist, since that is a threat to their domination over women. They like to use silly arguments that feminism is supposedly sexist against men, lame and uncool...but that shouldn't intimidate us, they are just scared to re-identify their manhood without oppressing women. Basically, they are scared to embrace their own feminity.

  • there are negative connotations associated with being a feminist, which i have bought into. But i am a liberal feminist anyway.

  • You say:

    1. "they are just scared to re-identify their manhood without oppressing women."

    and,

    2. "Basically, they are scared to embrace their own femininity."

So I assume that you think that re-identifying manhood necessarily involves becoming more feminine. Why though?

Also, how do you know that they are trying to re-identify their manhood in the first place?

  • For you guys who are laughing and thinking this is funny:

Imagine YOU are in the women's shoes and you were being grabbed, poked, assulted by other GUYS! Then suppose someone happen to catch it on camera and after witnessing YOU endure assult trying to escape, some heartless women just laughed, or joked saying you really liked it. See it doesn't feel good does it?

  • @filmtress I think the problem is that it is IMPOSSIBLE for men to imagine what it is like to be a woman. Most men, me included, probably think it would be great if women were constantly hitting on us. I think the whole fucking vs being fucked has a lot to do with it. Most straight men will never have or want the feeling of having something continuously inserted into our body, so we can't comprehend it. Not that women don't enjoy sex, its just a totally different/unimaginable experience.

  • u fuckin dumb ass they are puerto rican not black...u fuckin racist...white men assault women just as much as black men and hispanic men do

  • Women don't become lesbians for that reason, you dumbass.

  • @HazelnutInTheSun Why did you then stupidass?

  • @filmtress If that was supposed to be a comeback, it was pretty pathetic. Especially considering I'm bisexual, so you're lesbian joke was beyond pathetic.

  • @filmtress That's just a super ignorant and stupid thing to say. Even as a comment.

  • I don't know if you were completely watching the video or have been following music videos in the last 20-30 years but rap music aren't the only videos that are portraying women as sexual objects. Look at any butt rock/hair metal videos and you can see a lot of the similarities. Calling Eminem and Fred Durst race traitors is not only racist but ignorant. In fact, statistics say that 80% of rap cd's purchased are through white people.

  • I understand your point, but drunk or not, a woman OR man, just to make it equal, does not deserve to be raped, just because they were drunk does not justify it, I get your point about well if you're hanging out with creepy men, but a woman shouldn't HAVE to fear being around ppl. That's like placing a person in a box, like saying if you don't want this to happen, then don't go out and stay locked up in your house. I get your point, but I just feel rape under ANY circumstances is wrong.

  • I didn't economize my 500 characters very well... I certainly agree NOBODY deserves to get raped under ANY circumstances. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

  • @losersalwayswin it's pretty appalling that you would have this viewpoint, let alone post it on a public forum. the very act of rape should not happen, ever. it is taking advantage of a woman in the purest sense. therefore, what the woman does or doesn't do NEVER asks for rape solely for the reason that there is never a reason or an excuse for rape. you should keep this opinions to yourself because they're despicable and potentially hurtful to anyone who has experienced rape or sexual assault.

  • What you fail to appreciate is that despite her situation, no girl deserves to be raped. Victims of personal assault, robbery or home invasion are not given the kind of thoughtless, crass and debasing advice that rape victims are given. A victim is a victim despite the circumstances.

  • What you fail to appreciate is that I say these things because I was a victim myself. I don't want people to go through that shit, it drives me fucking crazy. When there are horrible health conditions, people look for ways to prevent them. What the fuck is so wrong with suggesting that many rapes can be prevented? THEY CAN. You cannot deny it, it's a fact. Stop trying to make me look evil for suggesting girls take some precautions. This conversation is getting stupid.

  • ps. I never EVER said they 'deserved' to get raped or anything about 'asking for it.' All of that crap was put in my mouth. The only thing I said is that when you get very drunk and shit like that, your risk of being attacked is higher, and it's damn fucking good idea for girls to not do those things to possibly prevent getting in the situation period. I fail to understand what about that is not good advice.

  • @kelseywithak You are absolutely right, kelsey. But, hey, look at the moron's screen name. They are a loser, and they think they are winning. This is the closest creeps like that get to interacting with real women.

Ignore them, unless you want to waste your time on another idiot who regularily confuses white paint for milk ;).

  • I'm a woman, douchebag.

  • I know you're a woman, I have the capability of reading past posts.

Secondly, regardless of your experiences, what people are TRYING to tell you is that getting drunk and "shit like that" does not stop women from being raped and attacked.

Women have the right to drink just as much as anyone. Should they also stay home and wear chain underwear?

How about instead of lashing out, you think about the consequences of your words.

  • LOL! I never said women don't have the right to drink. You're extrapolating things now. I find it ridiculous that you think it's NOT good advice for girls to avoid getting shit-faced and to be careful about where they are and with whom. It won't prevent all rapes, but there are plenty of people that advice could save. Idc if it's not PC enough for you. I wish I could go back in time to reconsider going off with some dude I didn't know, without anyone knowing where I was or whom I was with.

  • Now I know you're feeling attacked. But *I'm* not actually attacking you. I'm trying to point you to the logical conclusions of your argument.

Of course I never personally condone "getting shit-faced."

What Roxusan mentioned is true. When you start saying, "Do this, do that to minimize your chances of being raped" it starts a blame cycle on the victim for THEIR actions effecting the actions of the attacker.

  • The next logical step following "don't get shit faced" is, "don't wear provocative clothes."

Then you have a spiral. It becomes don't wear ANY clothes that show skin, don't go out at all at night, never leave the house without a relative. This kind of thinking removes blame from the attacker and places the responsibility on the victim. It SEEMS like good sense to not get drunk, but what people are saying is that the advice, though well-meaning is also destructive in its nature.

  • ps. Sorry, I was replying to that guy when I said I was a chick. Not you.

  • @losersalwayswin You are a woman. And a sexist who defends rapists. Your point?

  • I hate rapists more than you could understand. That was so fucking ignorant, you don't know me. Why the fuck am I being attacked for saying the obvious? PEOPLE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DRUNK GIRLS. Everyone wants to reduce their risk of being attacked. Fuck, I consider "don't get shit-faced" good advice for anyone. Yeah it happens to sober people, but other times girls are hurt because they drank to where they couldn't defend themselves. Eliminate that possibility. Don't get wasted. lol Common sense.

  • I have to say, drunk women are not the culprits. Rapists are. Women shouldn't have to change their lifestyles just because some men are so uneducated and disgusting that they can't stop thinking about sticking their penis' into anything feminine. Women should be able to drink just as much as men do, and men should incur harsher punishments for rape or sexual assault.

  • It is also an irrefutable fact that many women are not drunk when they are raped. It is also an irrefutable fact that over 80 percent of sexual assault victims know their assailants, and it is also an irrefutable fact that over 20 percent of the victims of sexual assault are under the age of 15.

By the way, you overuse the word "douchebag."

  • @nikkikgu thanks asshole, you never know if there was a girl that has been in that situation, stfu please.

    dont you dare write back.

  • @nikkikgu The question remains, would 'harsher punishments' really help?

  • @nikkikgu tru dat. thumbs up.

  • @nikkikgu Didn't you watch the film? its about how those men exert their dominance over females. it linked to sexuality, but the ultimate goal is to force dominance and power over females. re watch the limp biskit section and listen to the narrator. the media is making that exertion of dominance on females that way seem acceptable.

  • @nikkikgu but we like calling girls sluts it makes us feel powerful

  • @nikkikgu RIGHT!!!! totally agree.

  • A woman being drunk and hanging out with men is not a reason or an excuse for rape. Your post makes zero sense.

  • I agree with Circus.

There is no excuse for rape. The very definition for rape is unwanted sex. If someone does not understand the meaning of "no", and can't tell when sex is unwanted, maybe some time in the slammer will teach them. But rapists must take responsibility for their crimes. Blaming the victim and making excuses gives rapists excuses, and condones a rape-culture.

  • I think that these music videos are a reflection of how society thinks. Society still has the notion that women are lesser than men. It's not as obvious as it was a hundred years ago but it is still there. As we can see here, these thoughts are transfered onto the music videos. What's worse, the music and the music videos also fuel these feelings of superiority in return. It's disgusting and hopefully one day society will fully see females as equals.

  • The videos they are referring to make up around 1 or 2 percent of videos, possibly higher on CMT and BET. There's hundreds of videos that are not sexually explicit for every one that is.

  • I saw Dreamworlds II and it shocked me. changed the way I saw those videos for sure. Of course by that time I'd stopped watching those channels as they just got away from the videos in the first place. Most of them were never interesting to watch, just commercials. but the whole use of sex to sell products and then more sinister, to promote fantasies that young people feel they need to live up to, that's scary. this video was pretty depressing as well, wow

  • This makes me want to cry. I am so sick to my stomach right now.

Its funny how they censor things like Fuck and Shit but its okay to play Lil John singing "skeet skeet skeet" during a school dance while all the young girls freak dance for the boys. Its all just so appalling.

  • absolutely sick... we're safer in a cage full of lions than with our fellow human beings... and i hate the women that lend themselves to these kinds of representations... i detest them... and for those of you that commented "lol" and "oh this is fake..." even sicker... I wonder how it would feel if it happened to your or a loved one. Mad respect to those of you that had the mental capacity to understand the message of this documentary.

  • Comment removed

  • Don't say "we." I can tell the difference...

  • Today at my Gender class (UMSL) I watched this full video..we got SO tired of this whole sexual scenes and others. it is deserved to watch but be aware! after watching this, you will be so depressed by this video. i was feeling too sad to keep my tears inside. you will know how these media affect us so much,

  • Watching the footage from the parade absolutely breaks my heart...

  • @carolyn995

I feel more than ashamed for us men. I'm sorry for this to be..

  • This documentary changed my life! I will NEVER look at music videos the same way! How can we change this?

  • It is sad how the media not only portrays what both men and women should be like but also each race. In the early 1990s many music videos with African Americans (example: Tupac) were more about social issues than sex. Videos now portray African American men as very violent and sexually aggressive but the interesting thing is that most of the creators of these videos, telling these men how to act, are older white males. Self-fulfilling prophecy?

  • yea i watched this thursday in my

    abnormal psych class,

it's really good and it's really surprising

at some of the things they show...

especially film of assaults at the puerto rican

day parade a few years back.

    it's crazy

  • Hip-Hop is my favorite genre of music but I'll be the first to admit that the MOST female objectifying happens in Hip-Hop videos. No one can argue against that!

  • actually, it occurs universally across all genres of music. that's the sad part.

  • You can probably check it out are your public library or a university library

  • Re: CrispyClaire: I contacted Challenging Media, but they said that they needed to make money too and cannot offer the whole thing online. The video is pretty expensive (like $100+? or something) and they sell it to universities and stuff. Oh well. I'd also like to know if there were any full length versions online...powerful stuff.

  • I watched this documentary in my Sociology of Gender class at UF. It makes me physically ill. I mean, I know that these sexual images have always been there, but when will we realize that it is breeding violence and intolerance??? When will women respect themselves enough to stop being objectified and when will men realize that women are of so much more substance? This has really discouraged me from having kids. This world is screwed.

  • ** can someone upload this whole documentary, please? It would be much appreciated! **

  • Wow, Fred Durst is a very very insecure little boy.

And where the hell were the cops for that NYC convention?! Some fucking heroes.

  • I suggest that you watch the documentary "Tough Guise." It talks about a lot of the assumptions and negative images placed on men, instead of just focusing on women.

All that I can say is that for every false accusation, there are A LOT of very real ones. It is a shame when you can ask most of your female friends if they have ever been sexually assaulted and the majority say yes.

I don't think that this documentary is anti-male. I think that it is anti oversexed pop culture.

  • "There are retards of both genders."

But there are more men who commit sexual assualts (which is what this topic is about...not gold diggers, child support, or any other off topic thing you bring up).

  • WhiteBuddha,

You make sense. Verlch does not. Period ;-)

I tried to have a rational 'discussion' with this Verlch person but believe me: it'll go nowhere. The video is perfectly clear about the issues we should talk about, not about V talking nonsens about murdering babies :-S

  • They bring these things up because they feel like they are under attack. Something that men do is appauling, so let's turn the tables on women. Bleh.

  • "It is subliminally expressing that male behavior, of a small minority of men"

SMALL MINORITY? Dude, what are you smoking and where can I get it?

  • And Verlch, what did you think about those men grabbing at the women? Weren't you disgusted? Or are you sick in the head?

  • "Let's sit and think. Let's ask everybody how many rapes they have heard about through friends, or on TV. Does it really amount to millions of rapes?"

It does amount to A LOT of rapes. Every day I turn on the news and here about rapes. I'm assuming you don't watch the local news or you live in a very small town.

  • "Not only that, 50% of post womb deaths are from the mother killing her own child out of the womb. Where is your bleeding heart for those victims?"

    1. Talk about fake statistics, where did you get that 50%? Out of thin air?

    2. What does this have to do with sexual assault? This isn't a feminism debate. Don't turn it into one.

  • People do horrible things every day. There's no doubt about that.

But where in the media are there images constantly saying that baby killing is okay?

This documentary is not targeting men as rapists and sexual deviants. It is simply saying that this one-dimentional sexual image of women is working to make this type of violence seem somewhat acceptable. Both men AND women are to blame for this problem.

  • the point of this video is not to blame a specific gender, but to blame the social institutions for socializing men into violent behavior. the media perpetuates gendered violence and also perpetuates our compliance of gender inequality.

men are to blame for their actions, and women for their compliance. we live in a gendered patriarchal society. only when we achieve an egalitarian society will sexual violence be reduced.

  • "What's the matter sweetie, you don't want the world to know the other side of Marxist androgyny of feminism?"

This video isn't even specific to feminism.

  • Verlch, this is not a feminism debate you dumbass. Stop posting your bullshit here.

  • "It is provable that over 60% of rape accusations are false allegations. Less than 1% of hospital ER visits are for domestic violence. "

None of your fake statistics were ever proven true.

  • actually thats false because the FBI reports that less than 2% of reported sex crimes are false reports.

  • LESS THAN 2 PERCENT ARE FALSE... What's the rest of the percentage that's left? MORE than 98 percent of REAL reports. THAT is sad.

  • I like how at the end of the video it shows a man helping one of the girls away from the mob. I think that shows there is some hope left and not everyone is living in this 'dream world'.

  • This is only a small clip from the full dvd. The limp bizkit video was actually used in the original film to show how men react to rejection, and i think in the song he says something about "i'm a man and I take what I want." showing male agression against a woman who doesn't want him inside of this "dream world"

  • purchase the DVD then you will get the whole message of the documentry. Its a fantastic documentry and it has a good message...

  • Outstanding, I LOVE to see smart people(like you)create social critiques. i hope people get the real message of your effort, for the betterment of a society that has a revolting behavior.

  • Thinking about it some more I think you missed the point. The Limp Bizkit clip was used as an example of a larger problem. It could have been just about any artist. The problem is cultural and not with one musician or group.

  • you can not say that most of the influences come from R&B and HipHop. The distortion of the female body as a highly sexualized being only existing for men's fantasies in music has been around for centuries. You can point out that R&BHipHop are what is culturally popular now in the American mainstream and that is is what the majority of our public chooses to watch and is influencedby."

  • She ends up smiling about what had happened"? she smiles because the director told her to. Not because she enjoyed being verbally abused while tied up to a chair.

  • fucking sick. God.. It's just so fucking sick

  • He was pointing out that the the fantasy view projected by the music industry in videos leads others to duplicate that in a non-fantasy setting.

  • Fantastic documentary.
