Watched the hole series, loved it. Im not from that part of the world so I didnt watch from any particular point of view but I can say that, all Scots should be very proud of where they come from and where they are going. What a strong, proud people. What beautiful part of the world.
@povar1981 If you believe it is to save money you are laughably wrong. The future of the NHS in England is that within 10 years NHS chiefs in England will be making several million pounds a year to rival their friends in Banking. How does that save money? It will be money (from mainly, Scotland's Oil Revenue if Independence doesn't happen) being transferred from the state purse to private (individual) profit. How many millions an NHS chief makes in future depends on the result in 2014. Vote Yes!
Scotland reminds me of my beloved West Virginia. The beauty of the land and the poverty of the people. Although West Virginia is part of the US, we have always been treated as the red headed step child of the nation. Our coal made rich men even richer, while making widows and orphans out of our people. Our mountain people learned to live off of the land, just as the Highlanders of Scotland but that is probably because we are the same, most of the mountain people are Scots, immigrants
We are looking much forward to see the rebirth of Scotland soon! Will Alex “The /new) Bruce” Salmond ascend the Scottish throne and drive the devilish English out of Scotland by a second battle of Bannockburn? And the Scots are now behind the Irish, who were enslaved by the English earlier than they but have won their independence back in the 1920s! So it is time for the Scots to remember their ancestors and restore their realm!
I watched this entire series. I think at some point Scotland should become totally independent. It seems the parliament is loaded with people that are more privy to England's interest than Scotland's equity. This country has lived under tyranny throughout it's history. What Scotland needs to do is develop industries to become self-sustaining before they dump British rule that came about through some historical puppet king.
It's sickening to think how the greedy have ruled for their own benefit.
I remember seeing websites that post future maps of the world, and pessimistically show an independent Scotland & Wales. But, I don't see why that can't be shown optimistically!
I believe a vital part of the principle of liberty is the determination of a group of people to have any type of government or independence they wish! I'm an American, and though I'm no fan of the old Confederate States, I do believe any section of a country can be its own country if it wishes!
as an englishman, the issue is simple for me. if the scots want independance, they should have it, and if they want to remain part of the union, then they should do remain. simple
OMG! The English, Irish, Welsh, and Scots all speak the same language, drink pints at pubs, and fist-fight over Football scores. Please stop going on about the small diffences that seperate you, it is pointless and boring.
@mcallistermd Englishand Scots do NOT speak the same language. They also have diffrent educational systems and laws, and forms of currancy, you cant spend Scottish pounds in England. I was born and raise in the Scottish NE and I cant remember a single time where I spoke English. Small diffrences? You mean like the small diffrences between the USA and Afganistan? Then yes, small diffrences.
The problem with "Scottish Independence" is that, as this show demonstrates, Scotland's problems have been the result of a lot more than any supposed inferiority to an "oppressive" English majority. If anything the issues have been more a matter of class vs. class. Independence won't magically make such issues vanish -- and may in fact make them worse.
I hope that one fine day Scotland will be free from the British oppression so that the Scottish can take their rightful place on this planet. Think of a world where we would have known not just one James Maxwell but many of Maxwells, the world would be a different place and a better place. In Canada, 4 of our Prime Ministers have been Scottish and we as Canadians should guarantee Scottish sovereignty. For all the wrong they have done against your children, freedom should be granted as respite.
How dare Neil Oliver mention Scottish Nationalism, one of the defining themes in the 20th century, in his History of Scotland!!!
Does he not understand that as a historian it's his job to shut up and never challenge the traditional orthodoxy? I'm now going to use my created account to push my political hobby horse by writing 600 pages on why Scotland is better off in the Union.
...and if that fails let me post the latest opinion poll data to stiffle any debate.
@SCOTTISHB0Y AYE, we got the 1st step on thursday, now in 3 years we will get the vote, i for one canny wait to vote for independance and the chance to free my country. and experience something none of us have ever felt before. FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM!
I would urge all my fellow scots to do the same, we have came this far, one final push is all it will take. . .
75% of scots voted SNP last thursday, next time lets make it 95%
An outstanding series. Thanks for posting this. As a person with Scottish Ancestry, I now understand what motivated my Scottish Ancestors to be here in the Americas but maintain a loyalty to their homeland
that was such a good series, thank you. I don't pretend to understand the politics of england and scotland, but i feel the difference, and i am of irish desent.
A public vote would have been far more overwhelming and democratic than a vote from a scottish parliament that was as usual under pressure from ( south of the border ) Our parliament consisted of rich land owners who feared the confiscation of their land if boots wern't licked clean enough. Scotland as an entity ? We fought to become Scottish but we fought against being British thats the simple difference. Cant you just be proud of being English and go fly your flag elsewhere?
I grew up in Motherwell in the 70's and 80's with the vision that one day I would work where my father and the rest of my family worked. Nostalgic to see the Ravenscraig which every evening from my bedroom window I could see the sky glowing bright red when the furnaces were opened. The pain of watching it all fall to the ground was unbearable. Hope for the peoples sake something is built in it's place.
and have you any comment on the undemocratic desicion on making Scotland part of the union? You may care to answer the same question on behalf of the Welsh. Your not pro british you twat your simply an arrogant Englishman who feels more superior than us,thats exactly the union you want. Let me remind you that it's only a fantasy you have. The episode has explained a few truths that irritate you so go pull yourself off into a coma.
Was the formation of Scotland itself democratic? It makes me laugh how people moan about the formation of the union where atleast there was a vote in both the English and Scottish parliaments. The formation of Scotland was far less democratic and far more bloody. So why is Scotland as an entity more valid than the United Kingdom?
Im British. Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast are just as much part of my country as London or Manchester.
Okay what was so democratic about the formation of England? I am English myself, but have the added objectivity given to me through living abroad for 28 years. The English have treated their fellow Island inhabitants very badly in the past and still does so now, though I must say not on their own: Now however it makes no difference whether they are Scots, English, Irish or Welsh including a smattering of American and other foreign interests. It is greed now that rules over us all.
The formation of England was not very democratic either. The point i was making was people attack the United Kingdom because there was no "vote" but there was no vote to form Scotland either so why is one more valid than the other?
Scotland chose to join with England. All parts of the United Kingdom have benefited from this union and continue to.
I fully agree. See how the midlands were treated in the late 70s and 80s; they were no better off than the Clyde docks. All sides have profitted and all sides have had issues that were not so nice either. Personally I think today we ought to learn from the past and not welter in it. There are many negatives out there as it is whether domestic or beyond. Politicians and corporate magnates are dictating the wellbeing of all "simple folk" and I see that more dangerous than anything else.
A vote? Your having a laugh there was rioting in every Scottish city when the union was signed. The people didnt get a say and continue to be denied this right.
There was a vote in the Scottish parliament. When the Scottish King became King of England 100 years earlier there was some rioting in England too. The fact remains Scotland and Englands parliaments voted to unite. There was a vote.
Can you tell me when anybody voted for Scotland to become a country? People had no say on that either. The fact remains that over 60% of the vote at elections go to parties in Scotland who support remaining part of the UK. Separatists are a minority in Scotland
There was a vote in the parliaments that is true. Could you please enlighten me as to what percentage of the population actually got to vote in those elected members? Im sure you'll find it is a tiny fraction of the population. Not to mention the bribary to get the votes through.
60% of votes may be for Unionist parties, but I doubt every single one of those votes is staunch Union supporters. In fact, you'll find that very few people would want to go out of there was to defend the Union.
I accept that England and Scotland were not decent democracies back when the union was formed, but the fact remains there was a vote in our parliaments on this. The unification of England and the unification of Scotland was a lot more bloody and less democratic yet you seem happy to accept that?
I accept that not all who vote labour + lib dems support the union although the vast majority do. There are some who vote SNP that dont actually support independence, they just like their other policies
On the bribery accusation: recent research of the voting records has gone some way to debunking that myth that came to us through romantic poetry. It was carried by a decisive group of Whigs mainly from Fife, Lothian and the Borders who identified their common cause with English Whigs just as these days Scottish Labour and Liberal Democratic voters stand in solidarity with their English brothers and sisters.
Bonnie you seem to be under the illusion that the world enjoyed democracy in 1707. We 'Scottish' people have had a vote on the Union in every single election since Universal suffrage came about. The Act of Union doesnt measure up to our modern standards of democracy but it was a great deal more democratic than the creation of Scotland through violent Gaelic imperialism.
Watched the hole series, loved it. Im not from that part of the world so I didnt watch from any particular point of view but I can say that, all Scots should be very proud of where they come from and where they are going. What a strong, proud people. What beautiful part of the world.
