Blues is a song form , and a style. He is playing a "blues" form in a jazz style. This is what some would call a " jazz blues...... or blues jazz..... feeling some spinal tap coming on, better quit....
Very tasty indeed. And what a guitar! Ive done a much more humble version see my channel. Its not jazz blues just blues. Straight blues doesnt use jazz chords and substitions etc and only really uses the pentatonic and major pentatonic scales and a lot of bends, slides and more sustain. Jazz blues is what the marvellous Matt is doing above.
You need to see one of those Peerless guitars in the flesh.. You'd think it was photographic foreshortening that makes that headstock look big.. when in fact they are actually mahoosive!
Im really sorry matt that so many dummies out there cant bring their minds into a context of critical thought . Too many low IQ'S in america these days. This is very nice and easy listening............"not blues" good lord kill us all but leave the guitars for a species that deserves em !
This is blues - it's just a 'jazzy variation' of a slow blues in G. Basically, it has a more sophisticated chord sequence than a standard 1-4-5 of typical blues - Matt plays over the changes beautifully, highlighting key notes within each underlying chord...
A masterful 'jazzy' example of blues - but definitely blues!!
I agree with people who say this isn't blues. On paper this is blues, but that has nothing to do with what your ears hear. Let's say you play the notes from a classical piece, yet you play it as if it was pop/rock, then I personally wouldn't call it classical music.
@Hestjaevel111 If you don't think this 12-bar form is blues I don't know what to tell you. You could call it a "jazz blues" if you want but if you asked any player even rudimentally versed in jazz to "play a blues" this is what he would play.
The bass line is not a typical 12-bar blues. There's a blues structure, but it's been expanded on by adding extra chords. So "officially" a jazz-blues. The solo makes it very bluesy which is why it's not chrystal clear whether this is either jazz or blues.

you very talented man, but i dont really think this is the blues. It ofcourse is froma theoretical perspective, but your playing the blues as if its jazz. As a standalone jazz piece i think this is excellent, but i wouldnt call it the blues. The beauty of the blues comes not in the amount of notes but in what they each mean.
jazz needs a lot more talent. in traditional blues you just use 1 or at most 2 scales. but jazz musician has to practice it a lot to get it right.
I love the blues and I dont deny that. If you dont have blues in you, you cant be a jazz musician. But i just believe that jazzy blues is much more sophisticated...
well, once again Mr. Otten, you nailed it! beautiful piece, i love the bass behind you on that track, i would love to do a rock blues to that! keep it silky and smooth my friend!

u know the reason as a musician myself why i dont like this video or the music played. because its just notes until the artist performing is feeling what they are playing. this guy dont look at one with the blues. he's just going through the notes and what he was taught.
As a musician myself as well, I see where you're coming from. I can agree with you on some points. There probably could've been more feeling in there. But whether you agree or not, this man has some talent
OpenEye, there are many shades of blues and this is Jazz/blues - the 'blues' in it's traditional form, has influenced many types of music throughout the 20th century....and still does!

Thubs down. No feel, like jazz. Come to me when your feeling down. Thats when your blues is best bro, from a seasoned guitarest. Get some feel or find a diffent job. but overall good playing mister music school.
Sounds great as usual!! I really dig the tone of that Monarch. I was worried that it might sound too bright because Monarchs have no tone control but it sounds very mellow and warm and sweet. I HATE that thin overly bright sound too many jazzers have these days. I may have to get a Monarch. Yeah you sound real good man, keep it up :)

It's also important to remember that jazz is 95% blues.

yes, this would be an example of "blues"

@DrSpas not a good example... blues is much more raw, this is pretty jazzy, in fact there's a big part in this song that is almost pure jazz....
