Two of my favorite drummers, now, Danny is probably better, I mean, he was a big influence on Brann, but brann brings a lot to the table to and expertly places ghost notes and adds subtle hints of extra groove, together they made an epic duet, not a battle, but a great coordinated duo. great video.
Seems like Brann was putting a lot of effort into the fast and flashy fills, whereas Carey allowed his parts to breathe. At 50 Danny no longer has to prove anything, however when the new too album drops he inevitably will prove the doubters wrong.
@TheLANDADDY This is true. I was just pointing out that one of Danny's best attributes wasn't shown in this duet. I guess they're just different styles. Dailor is a more aggressive player and warps your mind showing how many fills one can cram in a song. I can see how that could appeal to people a lot more than playing for grooves or polyrhythmic feel.
@magicbeanpoop From a drummer, performing fills and creating a good groove without exceeding or shortchanging the odd bar takes more work than 6/8. In fact, I seem to find 6/8 the easiest to just "solo" to on drums. Odd time signatures take more thought, especially at first.

Tool's Danny Carey is an outstanding drummer! One of my personal favorite drummers! Give Ticks And Leeches, Reflections and Pushit (Live from the album Salival) a listen and u'll understand my point! :)) As for Mastodon's Brann Dailor, he also is an amazing drummer, but of course not as good as Danny, but still an extremely talented drummer! Both top notch drummers honestly! :D

This is neither TOOL nor Mastodon but Volto, a band Danny sits in and jams with when TOOL have their down time. Btw, that keyboard player who shows off during the drum solo is Kirk Covington and he is badass on the skins! All personal did great in this video.
Kirk Covington is the big goofy guy on keyboard who is a bad ass drummer who played some recordings with Scott Henderson from Tribal Tech Steve Smith played drums on some Tribal Tech albums as well.

Carey is much more comfortable and in the pocket, I also think he is more of a listener than Bran but that probably comes with age. Bran has been filling less and grooving more with each album which is a good sign. That keyboardist is the coolest looking dude I've ever seen by the way
@GuitarristA1quimista I'd say Danny is a way better drummer. Grohl is still very good but his versatility as a musician is also his downfall. He's very good at a variety of instruments. Danny focuses his talent entirely on percussion. It's the same as the difference between a bunch of good knives, or a traditional hand made katana.

Carey is much more comfortable and in the pocket, I also think he is more of a listener than Bran but that probably comes with age. Bran has been filling less and grooving more with each album which is a good sign. That keyboardist is the coolest looking dude I've ever seen by the way

@GuitarristA1quimista I'd say Danny is a way better drummer. Grohl is still very good but his versatility as a musician is also his downfall. He's very good at a variety of instruments. Danny focuses his talent entirely on percussion. It's the same as the difference between a bunch of good knives, or a traditional hand made katana.
