They are saying "Hey shoopala". It doesn't mean anything. It's just the way they gave some onomatapaeic sound to the rhythm of the song. Do you remember "who put the bomp in the bomp-a-bomp-a-bomp? Who put the ram in the ramarama ding dong"? It didn't have to mean anything. It just had to sound like the rhythm of the music really.
As mentioned in another post, Cliff was with Helen and yet they didn't end up together. Anyway I am so blessed to be able to see her on You Tube (thanks Piggie58)and find her so sweet and pleasant. Her hair was like Bart Simpson's mom. I thought it was just a cartoon madeup. But she looked very nice with it.
Yes great to see Helen Shapiro on 'You tube' & yes I bet thats where Amy Winehouse got her beehive. The voices are so similar. Shame we dont hear anything from Helen anymore, she;s great
Boy, what a completely typical early '60s sound, with the violins and high-pitched background chorus - just great. And I have to say that the one photo here of her with the very high beehive looks so much like Amy Winehouse, it's uncanny.
See my latest video, "HELEN SHAPIRO - TIP TOE THROUGH THE TULIPS". The first pic is of that L.P. Her other L.P.s were "TOPS WITH ME", "HELEN HITS OUT", "HELEN IN NASHVILLE" and "HELEN'S SIXTEEN".
Sorry, I thought you meant the very later stuff, from the 80s or 90s. The E.P. "A Teenager sings the blues" is teamed up with "Blues in the night", and St Louis blues". There is no 4th song, as St Louis blues is quite long. After youve gone/Tiptoe through the tulips/Goody Goody and "The birth of the blues" is on the "HELEN" E.P. I'll dig out "Woe is me" in the future. After I've done "A teenager sings the blues".
Yes - you are right! (I am trying to remember from 40+ years ago). I also had the "Helen" EP that you refer to.
I did mean that I am interested in her LATER jazz songs (that you referred to above) because I have NEVER heard any of them...
I had ALL her records until the 6 Day War in 1967, when I left the UK. Can you believe my mother threw everything away-much to my horror! :-( So you are giving the greatest of pleasure to be able to recall the past! Best regards
Sorry you are waiting so long for "Teenager sings the blues". I am having problems uploading video. My computer often throw's a wobbly, when I am trying to upload something.I'll let you know when I sucseed.
Hi, thanks for the posts so far. Have you got "Make Me Belong To You" and "The Way of the World"? If so, I'd be so grateful if you could upload them, they're the only '60s tracks of Helen's that I don't have - I don't think they're even available on CD.
Gosh, it's the first time I have even heard of those two songs. thanks for that bit of info. Is there anyone out there who can post those 2 songs jemb2000 mentions.
Thanks so much! The "A Teenager sings the blues" was an EP - with the title song; St. Louis Blues; Tip toe through the tulips; and...can't remember (maybe "After you've gone"[?])
I never heard any of the Jazz songs that you mention.
I always thought "Woe is me" was a good song. I left the UK in 1967 and lost touch. Thanks SO much for all you do. It is great to be able to go back in time and see/hear Helen at different stages in her career.
I've got the Jazz C.D. Simply Shapiro released in 2000 on Katalyst records. Songs on it are-I let a song go out of my heart/Don't get around much any more/Little samba/Who will buy/The nearness of you/Your feet's too big/Isn't this a lovely day
Straighten up and fly right/Spring can really hang you up the most/Buzz me/Choo choo ch'boogie/Undecided
It don't mean a thing/Flying home.Plus a medley of Johnny Mercer songs. What's your choice of next song.

Helen actually preferred this to be the A side when recording this and WBTH. It's certainly on a par with WBTH in my opinion!

as good as the smash hit as the a-side.
Once again it's clear that every good a-side needs a marvelous b-side too for a great hit.

I'll make "Teenager sings the blues" my next project, sometime this week.
I dont think there was ever an L.P. called that. She only made 4 early L.P.s. with just a few jazz and blues songs on them.
I've got a C.D. of more jazzier songs. I'll tell you more about that tomorrow.
