I started listening to DT as a kid in the mid 90s, so I'm partial to their metal side rather than the overdone keyboards. I haven't listened to their other albums much... mostly because of the ridiculous keyboards on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.

So, someone told me that DT was far more progressive than Tool, and after contrasting the styles of the two bands, I've noticed that they are two entirely different approaches to music.

It seems the way Tool works is they take seemingly simple parts and melodies and slowly evolve them through the song, whereas DT seems to alternate between multiple drawn-out and more complex melodies and themes throughout a song.

Would anybody agree with this short summary of their approaches to songs?

Surely. Tool are more complex on atmosphere - creating it with pretty much the same structures in D minor, rarely A or B minor. :) They are, however, just as tight rhythmically. Comparing them is apples and oranges, and those two bands are my absolute favorites. Ever. :)

Train of Thought's also my favorite. I enjoy all their other albums but it's the only one where I don't end up skipping over a song. I like to listen to a lot of modern hard rock as well (Chevelle, Deftones, Tool) and I like the modern sound of it all. The production sounded amazing...plus Honor Thy Father is my favorite song.

I remember many moons ago when i was a strapping young lad and I bought this album that i hated it. I remember remarking how is that an album called Awake is so good at putting me to sleep. Since that time I got out of progressive for the most part all together and listened to more indie type stuff. For some inexplicable reason Ive had a burn to revisit these guys later and i just have to say its been a total joy. I even enjoy hearing Awake with a fresh ear. Looking forward 2 further exploration
