You have really inspired me to learn Russian Viktor. I was adopted, learned that my biological grandmother on my father's side was Russian. Traveled to Russia and learned it fluently, lived there and down the road, taught English to Russian youth, not sure how old. Again, spaceba, dasvydanya :)
I only don't understand Russian attachment to religion... In Italy here, it appears everyone is just christian to conformism, you know, we have Vatican here, but you people really appear to need it! It's crazy and really sad in my opinion. What makes Rus' so fascinating for me is the anarchical part of the russian soul, but, what the hell, you do have problems to have to do with it! What do you think about that?
@lelorinel182 Catholicism, which is of course the dominant force of religion in Italy, actively encourages the person to politically conform to a very politicised church. In Russia, especially Protestants but even Orthodox too, know all about being on the opposite side to the state. When the Church and the State are on the opposing sides, you tell the wheat from the chaff a bit in the Church. These days in Russia it is not the same, but Baptists can never be comfortable like the Orthodox here.
Thanks a lot Viktor, really, I appreciated very much your help! You have to listen to how Russian folks say their sounds, otherwise you understand nothing! I'm going to listen grammar lessons as sono as I can! (part 1, 500 letters is just ludicrous!)
I found a video of the ending song with Russian Text, so you can follow along with the words. I can barely follow along with what little Russian I have learned so far. It's easier to follow along with Huliganov than it is with the video. But, it is a very beautiful song. It shows the beauty of the language. Search: Муслим Магомаев "Далеко - далеко" 1985
@SnipeChief New Numa. It was the subject of a YouTube contest at the time I made this, attracting several hundred entries many of which you can still see by searching on New Numa.
Is this the last episode of RL101? : ) well thank you so much man. Your videos has really helped me get the basics of Russian. I'm about to go onto your RL102 right now-just wanted you to know that you're a great teacher and very interesting person. Spacbia!
@usenetposts Ooo, That makes more sense then :) Thank you for these videos, Russian seems pretty hard to learn but you make it seem much easier :) And alot more enjoyable :) So thank you!
I really liked your joke in this video you made, you altered your voice so well to where the people are from who are in your joke. lol also Thank you so much for all the help with russian your video lessons are really inspiring.
Everytime I hear Russians speak, i tend to hear "Kak" a lot, I know what it means. Is it a common word or am I just recognizing a word that a know well ?
Kakaya eto pesnya? Nu Numa by Gary Brolsma. A youtube competition some years back was based on the song. You can probably find my (censored and uncensored) entries by searching "usenetposts numa" within the search box here.
Russians always handwrite. Print cyrillics takes too long and is too much effort.
I used to write in print cyrillics when I first began studying Russian, then switched to handwriting once I gained more confidence with the alphabet and reading ability. It also relieved a lot of stress from my hands.
And finally: How do you manage all of this? Working in our very time-consuming and challenging job, writing extensive posts, producing hundreds of videos, having a family and also learn 20 languages?
The majority of my videos do themselves, that is I take a small cam with me and try to remember (by now it is second nature) to get it out when anything worth filming happens. Sometimes it encourages me to walk of an evening when otherwise I might lounge around.
I should be writing books, but somehow I don't manage time for that and filming, and the filming seems to flow more naturally for now.
The languages also do not take much time in fact with the use of the goldlist method.
Do you have any suggestions on how to apply the Goldlist methodology when you use cards and/or software?
And one more question: Do people still underline ond "overline" letters like п and Ш in Russia or IS that a habit only the very old people still have? Old people use to do that in German as well.
It maybe on the old fashioned side, I don't know. As to goldlist method, it is sinstead of software and cards because I believe it has more advantages than software and cards. Why have cards when 30% of them should only need to be used the once? Think of the trees! The paper book is still easy to take along and quick to use in 20 minute sessions. You can keep it together with the coursebook. I think it is a question of time before you are comfortable in cyrillics, maybe practice on German words.
I am a German charted accountant, i.e. a colleague, beginning to learn Russian: Thanks a lot for your videos. Really great assistance, especially with the letters and pronounciation.
I am using special software for vocabulary training, as for me personally the Goldlist method bears one problem: written Russian letters still confuse me a lot (e.g. the little "t" looking much like an "m", or the little "d" looking like a "g"), so handwritten lists give me the creeps. Part 2 follows
Hey, it takes some real courage to proclaim the name of Christ, especially knowing that you could lose some audience for it. Just want you to know I really respect that.
Viktor, you're the man! Thank you so much for teaching me Russian in such an entertaining and interesting way! It's also great to see that there are other Christian linguists out there.
You know, it's fantastic that you're making a programme like that for free, and I thank you for it, but I had to say what I didn't like about the video.
I guess I use the word religion as a sort of umbrella-term for all not-exactly-what-could-be-called-rational beliefs, and perhaps it wasn't precise.
It just doesn't seem to suit together, language lessons and things like - 'perfectly god and perfectly man', because the joke section has already been filled.
Any suggestions on improving to read better? I read to my niece here and there, but the russian kiddy books like "koshkin dom" and others. Well i guess practice makes perfect. Too bad i can't get my bilingual extension in Russian, i'd fail it without being proficient in reading and writing.
What religious talk? I don't remember talking about religion. I may have mentioned Jesus, but that's nothing to do with religion, but about faith and friendship and love. I don't have time for none of that religion malarkey.
I'm just saying that belief and faith is one thing, and religion a completely different one. You can be a card carrying member of a religion, and not believe a word of it. It seems to be the majority case, in fact, if you ask me. I recommend belief, not religion. If you read the Gospels just our of cultural curiosity, you'll see that that's precisely the way Jesus put it in his relations with the religious of the day. Ironically, the more "godly" people were, the more they hated God among them.
Fantastic series, will be going on and trying your method, sounds very pleasant and simple, minus the confusing bits of "this on left and this on right" "times or divided by 3.3" exc exc X )
phenomenal video! Really thorough and well done your joke was VERY funny haha and I admire your ability to recreate those accents I find it funny how people (myself included) speak their second language with an accent because it is easier (my second language being spanish) versus trying to speak without one but all that aside, right on with god! We need more Christians in the world
You're more than welcome. please keep watching my stuff. And please posting your piano playing. I really enjoyed those two films and I think you could do a lot more and get a following.
Victor is Latin for one who vanquishes, and the surname, although in the form of a Russian surname, is also genitive plural for hooligan. So it's a multilingual pun for someone who stands up to and beats hooligans. Especially bad language teachers who don't know what they're doing and vandalise people's chances of learning properly!
I hope you don't stop with the series. I've had to stop Russian for a while because of the immense amount of school work I've been having to deal with, but I plan on resuming in the summer! You're a very good Russian teacher and I love your videos! I just wanted to say that so you know that your work is being valued even if it may not seem like it!!

Sincere thanks for the lessons, I have gained a great deal from them and I am very grateful to you. If I had paid serious money to receive that standard of teaching, I would not be disappointed. Have a great 2008 - Peace, land and bread!
Many thanks. You are always welcome to give a donation to a charity in my name if you think you received money's worth and wish to pay something. No pressure, though.
That was the New Numa song by Gary Brolsma. There was a competition on for people to make videos to this, and you can still find it under the competition section I think. I didn't get shortlisted but I did do an entry.
I have been using the cyrillic alphabet for a long time but never knew how to write it cursively. I love what you teach :D
By the way, you make great accents-the American one is hilarious.
I'm Jewish, but I appreciate your high faith, it is important and beautiful and far too people push aside their beleifs out of laziness / fear. Thanks for the Xristovim greetings, even if this was probably filmed a year before this :P
I'm glad you love my comments =) I love to hear from you too. ^_^ and Jews love you too. Haha! I was bummed out this year because my brother was working through the holidays, and thought I'd spend Chanukah alone (not many of us here!) and a bunch of my Christian friends surprised me by coming over and sharing wine and presents with me. It was really neat, and they felt really in touch with the stories about Israel.
I'm really pleased to hear that. So much bad has been done to Jews by people presuming to call themselves Christians that it is a relief when from time to time we can do a mitzvah for you.
well i have reached the final lesson of russian 101 that was a handful dave ....but very entertaining ;p practice i will i need a second language :) oh by the way when did you start learning russian?
Я хочу заметить про youtube свое личное наблюдение. Иногда все мысли "не вмешаются словами" на русском сюда. Приходится писать на английском - так больше "помещается".
In English, everyone has crap handwriting also, and they drop their 'aitches', say -in' for -ing, and all sorts of things like that. But I certainly wouldn't teach it that way.
Thank you for this series, I was having trouble pronouncing the vowels solely with the vocal diagrams found in books, and this helped in a very large manner.
I just finished the whole Cyrillic series...terrific stuff! The ordering of the lessons, the explanation of the Greek and Hebrew origins and the errrrrrrrrr was so much better than anything else I've seen or heard to explain Cyrillics.
One thing, though: for us novices, a lesson on how the character "й" changes the sound of the other vowels would have been a great addition. Perhaps, if time permits, you could do an addition to the Cyrillic lesson plan on this topic?
To be frank, the addition of an i-kratkoye ought not to change the vowel per se, it should simply add a -y sound at the end of it, like the difference between "so" and "soy" in English. After an и you cannot even really hear it, other than maybe a slight lengthening of the sound, after ы and all the other vowels you should be able to hear it. It appears at the start of some place and personal names which begin with Y in English, like York.
It's new numa, if you look at the competitions section of youtube you will see my entry at number 140 making a video for the whole song. Please vote for me.
Well, I'm not going to take it down myself. The only risk is if someone says singing to karaoke tracks is a breach of someone's steenking copyright ... but then MaryAnne (ysabellebrave)'s in a lot more trouble than I am and who would want to stop her?

That I no more revere His name.

When Ive no sins to wash away;
No tears to wipe, no good to crave,

And, oh, may this my portion be,
That He is not not ashamed of me!

Many thanks. You are always welcome to give a donation to a charity in my name if you think you received money's worth and wish to pay something. No pressure, though.

Professor, what is the song at the beginning, and what does he say other than the first 5 numbers? I like it, it sounds good.
Yardana28 4 years ago
That was the New Numa song by Gary Brolsma. There was a competition on for people to make videos to this, and you can still find it under the competition section I think. I didn't get shortlisted but I did do an entry.
usenetposts 4 years ago
Thank you, it's an awesome song.
Yardana28 4 years ago
Why does he say "Ra" in place of "oden" for the number 1?
Yardana28 4 years ago
When you count, you say "raz" "once" instead of "one". That's why I say as Huliganov "once more time".
usenetposts 4 years ago
Oo, how unusual. Is there a reason behind that, or is that just how it is?
Yardana28 4 years ago
I can't think of a rational reason.

Yardana28 4 years ago
I love your comments too!
I also love the Jews, and even have one for my Saviour. How about that?
usenetposts 4 years ago
I'm glad you love my comments =) I love to hear from you too. ^_^ and Jews love you too. Haha! I was bummed out this year because my brother was working through the holidays, and thought I'd spend Chanukah alone (not many of us here!) and a bunch of my Christian friends surprised me by coming over and sharing wine and presents with me. It was really neat, and they felt really in touch with the stories about Israel.
Yardana28 4 years ago
I'm really pleased to hear that. So much bad has been done to Jews by people presuming to call themselves Christians that it is a relief when from time to time we can do a mitzvah for you.

I suppose you're gonna tell me how to teach Russian without talking a bit, eh?
Incidentally, how messed up do you have to be to watch vlogs when you don't like listening to people speaking at length?
Mad, you are. I thought you ought to know.

nobody puts lines or hooks, exept I kratkoe and Yo.
Puzzigat 4 years ago
What are you getting at?
usenetposts 4 years ago
i say, no one no longer puts any lines above T and Sh. And have never ever put a line above P.
Puzzigat 4 years ago
In English, everyone has crap handwriting also, and they drop their 'aitches', say -in' for -ing, and all sorts of things like that. But I certainly wouldn't teach it that way.
usenetposts 4 years ago
no single russian person uses them( no one!!) but you can have second opinion of course... where are you from ?
Puzzigat 4 years ago
Thank you for this series, I was having trouble pronouncing the vowels solely with the vocal diagrams found in books, and this helped in a very large manner.

You see? On this one the lines on your face are very bad! You have only yourself to blame for this! :(

Now, on to grammer...
athackney 4 years ago
To be frank, the addition of an i-kratkoye ought not to change the vowel per se, it should simply add a -y sound at the end of it, like the difference between "so" and "soy" in English. After an и you cannot even really hear it, other than maybe a slight lengthening of the sound, after ы and all the other vowels you should be able to hear it. It appears at the start of some place and personal names which begin with Y in English, like York.
usenetposts 4 years ago
Thanks, Victor. I will try to listen for these sounds as you suggest.

What is the name of the song you used in the very beginning of this video?
Staedtler122 4 years ago
It's new numa, if you look at the competitions section of youtube you will see my entry at number 140 making a video for the whole song. Please vote for me.

Wish you all the best!.I hope your series on introductorial russian will stay on youtube for a long time.Thank you.

Well, I'm not going to take it down myself. The only risk is if someone says singing to karaoke tracks is a breach of someone's steenking copyright ... but then MaryAnne (ysabellebrave)'s in a lot more trouble than I am and who would want to stop her?
