just to explain the last comment - the 101st shoulder patch is an eagle - the vietnamese had never seen an eagle - so they called them the chicken soldiers -

from memoirs of north vietnamesse solders that i have found, the NVA commanders also told their soldiers that when they encountered the chicken solders - go the other way

I flew with VMO-6 and will never forget crossing into Laos back in '69 the closest I got to Woodstock, was my M-60>

Was with the 1/5 MP Platoon who patroled from Khe Sanh to the Laotian border. These scenes are really what is was like...mud, fog, total traffic jams on QL 9. 1/5 spent a few days at Lang Vei towards the border, but later moved to a hill southwest of the airfield.

Its been a long time ago. I believe Dewey Canyon was part of counter offensive around 1971 up north.  Lot of troops, munitions, equipment, supplies were earmarked up north MR1, I Corps.

Screaming Eagles, Camp Eagle was at Phu Bai. I remember Phu Bai in 71. Heavily fortified w/artillery, armor, jet fighters from Phan Rang, infantry, and battleship offshore. Never had really dry uniforms during monsoon season.

I was with the 1/1 Cav/ETroop/Americal Division and wounded at Con Thien (it was called A4?? when the Marines were there before

Dewey CanyonII/LamSon719 operation. I was wounded on March 31, 1971 with 57 days left in the Army. Was a SGT E-5 Tank Commander and hit in the arm, chest, (collapsed lung) back, buttocks and legs.

As an enlisted aide to General Hill's, commander 1/5 Mech Inf , "Red Devil", I had a front row seat to the deployment to forces in Dewey Canyon II. I had been supposed awarded the position for meritorius duty with the A Trp. 3/5 Cav. 9 Inf. I swelled up with pride when I heard my old unit spearheaded the drive to the Laotian border. Hill told ARVN General Lam that if ARVN troops America's assistance in the future. They failed miserably. History stands as is. We succeeded. ARVN failed
