Thank you for giving us a snippet of SDJ. Somewhere on YouTube is his acceptance speech for winning a British TV nod for his I, Claudius performance - what an articulate, modest man of real gentility. And one of the finest actors known to man. You can get his Hamlet only from Britain directly (Amazon.com) and it's worth every penny (or should I say pound!). I also love his Claudius in Branagh's version...for the first time I had some sympathy for the character!
Far and away the most vivid, meaningful Hamlet I've ever seen. Hamlet changed who I am with my first reading. Several readings, stage productions, and film adaptations later, Hamlet changed me again with Jacobi's singular performance.
I stumbled on Jacobi's Hamlet in the early '80's, and thought it there was nothing else like it; he made Hamlet a living, breathing human being, not merely a role for a great actor to play.
Jacobi is one of our most undervalued actors, his contributions broad, complex, and fully developed.
This snippet was a joy to find, and reinforced my perception of Jacobi as one of the truly great story tellers of acting.
I saw his Hamlet when it originally aired in the 70's. The most important performance of Shakespeare I've ever seen. I'd already been bitten by the Hamlet bug in class, seen the Olivier movie & was a little obsessed with it.
But seeing Derek Play it as a real human role-without affectation.Someone I utterly believed was living and breathing and feeling those thing in front of me. It opened my eyes about what Shakespeare,& life even, could be!
Thank you for these vidoes of SDJ Rosapurpurea. I recently watched I Claudius and was stunned by his performance. So sensitive. And he is so attractive. He's a real gem.
I'm so pleased to read this you know? I've started to like SDJ watching Cadfael and found out I knew him already thanks to Branagh's movies, then I saw his tv Hamlet and boom! I Claudius was another milestone...since that moment...mad about this wonderful actor :)
Actually it was a TV program, I don't know where you could find it :(...I was lucky enough to have a VHS copy directly from England thanks to a friend...
Hey, thank you Rosapurpurea for the new video. Goooood, he looks really classy ;o) *sigh* I can't help it...he's the most elegant actor i've ever seen.

David Werner will always be known at least to me as Ras Al Ghul, from Batman: TAS.

My pleasure, really...I deeply admire this man, for his talent, humanity and modesty, and comments like yours put a smile on my face.
I'm glad to 'spread the word' or simply know I'm not the only one who thinks nicely of him. :)

I just feel exactly the same about it...I didn't get the deep meaning of Hamlet untill I saw his...and he's still the best I've seen!

Thank you sooo much! I love this interview too...for once he's just himself, and I think he's great :)

How dare he get old. Knock it off, Derek. Now, at 70 years old, you are actually finally starting to sound old. I don't like it.
newsboysrok 3 years ago
I don't agree...he has the right to get old, he's human! :)
Of course, we don't like to watch him aging, but he is so real here I don't mind at all.

Happy new Year to you Galadiel!!!!
Yes, he's a classy man...even just with simple, white shirt and a jacket.

Hey Rosapurpurea, you did it again! Great video! Gosh he looks so dapper in this video and his Hamlet performance was one of the best I've seen...
SQDLVR 4 years ago
Yes, his Hamlet was a breakthrough for me.
I appreciate how he opened about stage fraight, he's quite reserved, so it was difficult I guess.
