  • I thought critics were wrong about 'The New Show.' There was some very funny stuff here, including this sketch.

  • I remember this show fondly. TV Guide wasn't as complimentary. They said it was like Lorne Michaels used rejected SNL material. The New Show aired during his period away from SNL. Does anyone have the skit of Buck Henry and his wife forgetting their camera? They encounter Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, aliens, and Jackie O.

  • Wonderfully absurd! I love it.

  • LOL@ "frozen dinners all over the highway"

  • God I remember this wow I can't believe it

  • Ha wrong again you kinda gotta admit it looks like him its a great video non the less

  • the pretzel guy is the voice of homer simpson

  • The pretzel guy is Paul Simon. The voice of Homer Simpson is Dan Castellaneta.

  • @shadetreeslim i think thats paul simon.

  • Wasn't the girl on the left.....didn't she play Chandler's girlfriend on Friends?

  • The one on the right is Maggie Jakobsen (now Maggie Wheeler), who played Janice on Friends.

  • @gooblymoo *looks at right hand* What was I doing? Watching this in a mirror? LOL. Yes, that is whom I was refering to. Thanks!

  • the sketch went on too long it was suppose to be a skit i think,,but it was long winded anyway those were the days,,,love john candy great man

  • been years since I seen this

  • Poor Paul Simon <3 He looks so disappointed...

  • love this. a Stoufers truck jackknifed on the highway. lmao!

  • Wow! thanks for putting this up. last year I searched the internet for anything about the New Show and couldn't find anything. Now, am I crazy or did Steve Martin perform Michael Jackson's Billy Jean on one of the episodes, and why hasn't that been released?

  • Yes, Steve Martin opened the first New Show episode with a take-off of the Billie Jean video.

  • Tacos and masking tape, what an idea!

  • I always like the bit regarding the preztels, $90 to glue the salt back on as opposed to just getting a new bag for a couple bucks.

  • "Food Repair" what a great idea!

  • Who is the girl on the right that brings in the tacos?

  • That's Maggie Jakobsen (now Maggie Wheeler). She is probably best known for her later recurring role as Janice in Friends.

  • Awsome!

  • Dave Thomas was the HEAD writer, his "appearances" doesn't begin to cover it.

  • eggs...we fix em.

  • Fun! I'd love to the skit Carrie Fisher was in as well.

  • the one with the turkey i believe is john candy's co star in nothing but trouble

  • I just read that George Meyer of 'The Simpsons' wrote this. What a man.

  • Paul Simon just couldn't stay away from sketch shows. I don't blame him, they are easy to rehearse because they're short and fun to participate in. He was practically a regular on SNL and got better and better at it.

  • I was happy when the new show came to tv. It was a good replacement for sctv when it wasn't on anymore. I remember these shows even though I haven't watched any till today.

  • I like it! Loved The New Show.

  • I never even heard of "The New Show" before, But in 1984 I was working nights and didn't watch much television except on my nights off. Oh well. Thanks for posting this. Those two girls with the taco shells were hot.

  • Thanks for posting this---

    God, I miss Candy.

  • John was the best Period.

  • Canadian comedians FTW.

  • I miss John.

    And Paul Simon? awesome.

  • That is a great and funny clip

  • Note this is actually not SCTV, but "The New Show" from early 1984. But I certainly agree that SCTV was a tremendous show.

  • The best material ever, and delivered with class! SCTV is the cats PJs!

  • YOU COULD HAVE HURT YOURSELVES!!

  • OMG 6:35 lol

  • man sctv way better then snl

  • Candy is still king!!!!!!!!!

  • He's more than a king he's legend.

  • 1:54-1:57, Brilliant :D

  • Man, I wish John Candy was still around.

  • Yeah me too.

  • Was this also an old Bob & Ray skit? It reminds me of their style of humor, rather odd but pretty silly.

  • Who cares? It's funny just because it is so F-ing retarded, I mean, all the fuss and bother of fixing up FOOD like it's a car?

Maybe I'm the only one who likes this kind of thing.

  • You're not - this is hilarious. It takes a lot for a 7-minute scetch to hold your attention, and this does it. AND Paul Simon?!

  • scetch=sketch

  • Let me give you a revision suggestion for your comment: "I didn't think it was funny". It's OK that you don't like it, just use a little more tact with your comments.

  • By the way - this response is meant for tenorlessons

  • That was pretty good, I'm amazed that they got 7 minutes of material out of such a stupid idea and kept it going till the end, nice! Always loved John Candy, even in the crappy movies he did! Remember Armed and Dangerous? Too freaking funny!

  • I love Paul Simon's music! But every time he did a cameo on SNL or SCTV, it seemed like the whole scene lost momentum and just fell a little flat. But he was great in that Woody Allen movie (forgot the name)!

  • John Candy may be one of the twenty greatest intuitive comics of all time. Watch him say the various assessments of the damaged food with all of the phrasing, mundanities, and physical tics of any repairman of any sort, and note how the subject of the statements counterpoints the normalcy of the delivery. My favorite two minutes of "HOME ALONE" is when he and Catherine O'Hara are on his band's bus, and they're just making it up, with total seriousness, resulting in total hilarity.

  • Tuxguys, I would go further and say he's one of the top five intuitive comics of all time! I totally agree with you about his comic genius. That scene in "Home Alone" is, without a doubt, the best scene in the movie. I can't think of anyone who could have pulled that off with such seriousness, and in a way, such comic optimism, oblivious to the trauma the situation had on the kid! "Kids, they bounce right back!" I'm laughing so hard when I watch that! John Candy is missed dearly by millions.

  • Yes, at the time she was known as Maggie Jakobson.

  • Is that Janice (Maggie Wheeler ) from friends as one of the girls?

  • Carrie Fisher & John Candy, is this a segment from "Saturday Night Live"?

  • This is from NBC's The New Show, which aired in early 1984 on Friday nights. It had a look and feel of SNL and produced by Lorne Michaels, but it was not live.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I haven't seen it since 1984 when it first aired!

  • Wow! This is great!

    RIP John Candy

  • John Candy! Legend live on ! ...thankyou .U.K.

  • You are so lucky to have access to reruns of The New Show! I loved it, and we should be able to get it on DVD, by gum! Does anyone have anything from the episode with Gilda Radner and Kevin Kline? There was a hysterical sports bio piece with them as figure skaters.

  • xxxxxx Gonzo Funny.

  • I loved this show and this was one of my favorite sketches on it.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • One of my favorite clips.John Candy was the best, sure miss him.

  • Ziploc paid handsomely for this sketch.

  • Written by George Meyer (The Simpsons, Army Man)

You may recognize one of the college girls as Janice, the annoying ex-girlfriend of Chandler on Friends.

  • Hilarious stuff here. John Candy was soooo funny.

I remember watching this show with my Dad in '84 and I totally forgot about it until I saw a clip somebody posted of "The Frightened Family".

I saw this show 3 years before I started watching SNL.

    Thank you for posting this!
