The main scene of that movie that sticks in my head is the cigar exchange.
"How did you know my leprosy wasn't contagious? ,,, I didn't" Haha, classic.
Oh and eating the cockroaches was cool too (or whatever bugs). I remember bits and pieces of this although I saw it about 30 years ago when I was around 7. Thanks I would never have noticed that. Saw this as a kid when it first came out. Watched it again recently. Yes IMHO one of the best ten movies ever, maybe top 5. One of the very best. McQueen/Hoffman were perfect, I mean perfect in these roles. How did they NOT both get Oscars??? Performance by McQueen, maybe the best performance I've ever seen in a movie. Love the theme too esp. when played on accordion ...
why have they change the scene so much for a start he was with a friend, it was at night and the wave came up to his height and he jumped in with his bag of coconuts he didn't toss them into the sea first, i hate films i really do they take all the magic away from a story to fit into a space of time totally ruined this story what a shame death to American film.
jewnazi12 LIGHTN UP The story was also the combined stories of events that happened to many prisoners. Not JUST Papillon's experiences. Dalton Trumbo did an excellent screenplay. This just shows how well read and smarter you are than the rest of us who ALSO read the book. Don't worry you're smart okay....feel betternow
You should read "Banco", the sequel to "Papillon" outlining Henri Charrriere's post-escape life. It's an equally fascinating chronicle of the reforming gangster; still trying out various schemes in South America (and screwing up each time--for various given reasons), interspersed with more candid reminiscences in which he admits to himself that he was a rotten teenage delinquent who grew up to be a rotten crook.
A French actor? It seems strange to have a French story and soundtrack but an obviously American actor. I'm no good with names, but Hofftman is a good enough draw to get people to watch this movie anyway. I'm a bit cynical of McQueen as he turned down the chance to star alongside Caine, Connery, Hackman, Hopkins, Olivier, Redford, Elliott and others in A Bridge Too Far (1977) apparently because he wanted starring roles instead of being part of an all-star cast.
they ALL should have turned down "a bridge too far"! but yes, he wasn't exactly a team player, the other actors in "great escape" and "magnificent 7" would have been with you on that one.
good point about french actors- jean-paul belmondo would have been good (the one who looks a bit like a younger sid james!)
@norristerse Hey, what didn't you like in 'A Bridge Too Far'?
It's funny, these actors and personalities. Elvis, Marlin Brando and McQueen don't strike me as the kind of people who liked doing what they were famous for. I heard Brando hated acting, McQueen seemed to spend more time racing cars and Elvis seems distracted ~ on autopilot in some of his performances...
@5ivevisionstars you've caught me out there- i didn't see it! i remember when it came out, and you know when you see the advert and you say to yourself: "...nahhhh"
good point about actors not liking their chosen vocation. usually they start off well into it but the industry side pisses them off. shame some of them don't enjoy what they do as much as we do!
@norristerse I was really happy when the special edition of Star Wars came out and I got to see that at the cinema. That was lots of fun. But regarding these actors/artists: I'm learning about Theodor Adorno & Max Horkheimer's ideas on what they call "Culture Industry". I can imagine anyone getting a little tired with the feeling that they are a cog in the system.
@5ivevisionstars i haven't heard of those guys but "culture industry" is a good term for it. when it becomes a production line the artistry can often go out of the window. at one time of day though, the parsimony of some film producers sometimes had a positive effect. they would cut out anything that didn't have a direct bearing on the story, which meant older films sometimes had more pace and were less self indulgent. i find myself going "nahhhh" at every trailer these days!
@norristerse I know what you mean. Sometimes they're quite shameless with their commercialization of their material. Sometimes it seems to be an ironic statement itself, but who's to know. Hey, if you're on Facebook, add me if you want: I'm listed under "Hohepa te Pūru". Cheers
and Glad for freedom, which is a lot of what this story is about. God made us free, do not let any man or system make you a slave. God is love and can be trusted.
I love this movie,it's one of the greatest films ever made. Seeing the diver steadying the raft is ok with me. I am sure there are quite a few other 'tricks' involved in making this or any other movie. This film was an 'Epic' acheivement in film making and a profound statement on the regard for freedom amongst some men.
@Zampan0 This movie was made back in the day when tricks or stunts pretty much had to be done by real people and yes sometimes there were bloopers like seeing the diver here. This is when "real" movies were made. Now days they use that stpuid blue or green screen in a studio in a fake tub of water or such and there is hardly ever any real life action scenes or stunt work.Movies these days aren't worth watching because you never know what is real and what is computerized.Worthless.
@kottonmouthvids well I'm sorry you feel that way,but you weren't even born when this movie was made. How can you make comments like that when you don't know how the movie was made?My comment wasn't worthless and you know it.You are someone that wants to stir up controversy on this site with people. So what are we gonna do now?Start cussing at each other and making threats to each other? No I won't be stooping down that low. This will be the only thing you will read from me here Mr.Expert!Good day
@thecoolestdad all old people use the same excuse. "you wern't born yet" what if i'm older than you? i doubt it but i'm just saying this has no revelance. the movie is epic the book is even better but it's funny you won't even admit when you see a blunder. i am old enough to be able to laugh at something this obvious wile senior citizens like yourself believe the movie is real or something. get a grip and realize this is a movie with a huge blunder lol
@thecoolestdad thank you for unloading your feelings to me grandpa but i only stated the facts. this is a blunder and most of us thought it was funny but there's always a jerk out there who has to try to sound intelligent. you are the only one who even cares about this lame ass shit. so tighten your suspenders and drink your medamucil pappy and quit bothering me because i will shove this video in between your dentures and your diaper. peace
I'm happy to see this posted! I love the film, but I noticed the diver under the raft even on our family's first color TV, on channel 5 in L.A. It's driven me nuts over the years when my friends say they don't see the diver! When I watch this amazing film, I generally turn away at the end and just listen. I know this isn't an example of the proverbial Breaking the Fourth Wall, the diver just ruins something for me.
There was another scene where a chicken was hit and killed by a car. They still kept rolling, but it was a true scene, so I think it couldn't have been an intentional event.
I Love This Movie , truly a great classic. I think there musta been an alternative ending, I could swear he said, "I'm still alive you sons of bitches" Someone tell me if they concur please!
When I saw this part of the movie I though it was kind of dumb anyway, because Dustin had a bag of coconuts too and was planning to go with him, but changed his mind at the last minute. Papillion could have tied the two bags of coconuts together and probably wouldn't have needed a diver under his raft.
that was a baby killer whale! my uncle was an associate producer during the filming and he noted that a killer whale pup had been feeding in the area.
to convey one aspect of the alluring portrayal of certain masterpieces in literary work by acting genius, a deviced error amongst the small atunement of intricate syntax developed in the words associated with the vision of a book of art, misplaces the original nature of creativity with aspergers.
would i want to be lost in the vacation of the brilliant cinematic, or catch myself editing the perfection of adjoinment with discrepancy of pety over assumptions.
Hey guys, just read the book and was absoloutely taken back, awesome read! does anyone know any other books that i would like seeing i really enjoyed 'papillon'?
the book is awesome much better than the film.if you like prison stuff i would reccommend marching powder, damage done and catch me if you can which is also a lot better than the film.they miss too much out in the films
Yeah 'Marching Powder' was great... I finnished that a few months ago. I went to borders (book store) and talked to an old guy saying that i read 'Papillon' and i needed something to replace it. He said 'marching Powder' but then he handed me a 900 pager and said read this, he said its one of the best books he'd ever come accross. 'Shantaram' true stroy about an Aussie who escaped prison and fled to India. Reviews are great, just started it last night and am hooked!
Read or watch anything about Mark Brandon "CHOPPER" Read it's immense. The film is a cult classic. Really dark, but with some fantastic humour injected in it. All based around real events, real people and a 'true' story.
you just have to love this movie, just look at Steve McQueen's face when he's just about to jump, preciless!. Great movie and two great actors giving us two great performances.
85 per cent an abosolute true story, saw it at the cinema in '73, when i was a young kid,and its still in mt Top 10 List and will be forever...shot in Spain and Hawaii, the scenery is both gorgeous and painfully lonely in this epic, under rated peice of genious.
The shot of the real Devil's Island are shown as the credits role at the end. They still terrify me to this very day.
It is supposed to be one of 'the'modt haunted places on Earth.
The film is nothing like the book. The book is 100 times better. Papillon is a fantastic and wonderful read. It is my favourite book.
Sadly the Papillon story is not true. Read "Hell on Trial" by Rene Belbenoit. Papillon is based on Rene Belbenoit's book. So much of Papillon was plagiarized from Belbenoit it is laughable people believe Papillon is a true story. Remember the story about Papillon saving the governors daughter from drowning? Belbenoit wrote about that in 1938, 30 years before.
I can't remember how many times I've seen this flick, maybe 10-15 times. I had just watched it again when I was signing up for YouTube, now I am Papillion! Still as good as it ever was, long live the spirit of Steve McQueen!
the book is based on charriere's stay in guyana but that doesn't mean it's not fictionalized
one good scene from this film is where the protagonist hallucinates in his cell and is convicted for ' wasting his life ', upload that instead of this melodramatic shit
I read this book in jail. Made me wanna break out. Great story.

the croc's mouth is also tied earlier in the film
slayer1888 2 years ago

This will be the only thing you will read from me here Mr.Expert!Good day
thecoolestdad 3 months ago
@thecoolestdad all old people use the same excuse. "you wern't born yet" what if i'm older than you? i doubt it but i'm just saying this has no revelance. the movie is epic the book is even better but it's funny you won't even admit when you see a blunder. i am old enough to be able to laugh at something this obvious wile senior citizens like yourself believe the movie is real or something. get a grip and realize this is a movie with a huge blunder lol
kottonmouthvids 3 months ago
@thecoolestdad thank you for unloading your feelings to me grandpa but i only stated the facts. this is a blunder and most of us thought it was funny but there's always a jerk out there who has to try to sound intelligent. you are the only one who even cares about this lame ass shit. so tighten your suspenders and drink your medamucil pappy and quit bothering me because i will shove this video in between your dentures and your diaper. peace

this is a great movie.
your detail is not important when
we think about that history. the
important is the fight for freedom.

did you read the book the movie was based on?

I'm happy to see this posted! I love the film, but I noticed the diver under the raft even on our family's first color TV, on channel 5 in L.A. It's driven me nuts over the years when my friends say they don't see the diver! When I watch this amazing film, I generally turn away at the end and just listen. I know this isn't an example of the proverbial Breaking the Fourth Wall, the diver just ruins something for me.

@snugglekitty08 If these "tiny details" aren't important in your opinion then why did you watch this clip in the first place? :)

There was another scene where a chicken was hit and killed by a car. They still kept rolling, but it was a true scene, so I think it couldn't have been an intentional event.

I Love This Movie , truly a great classic. I think there musta been an alternative ending, I could swear he said, "I'm still alive you sons of bitches" Someone tell me if they concur please!

well, this clip was taken from AMC so they probably edited it to be suitiable for televsion... idk

When I saw this part of the movie I though it was kind of dumb anyway, because Dustin had a bag of coconuts too and was planning to go with him, but changed his mind at the last minute. Papillion could have tied the two bags of coconuts together and probably wouldn't have needed a diver under his raft.

GENIUS!!! I thought the same thing( except for the diver thing cause I never noticed!)

to convey one aspect of the alluring portrayal of certain masterpieces in literary work by acting genius, a deviced error amongst the small atunement of intricate syntax developed in the words associated with the vision of a book of art, misplaces the original nature of creativity with aspergers.
would i want to be lost in the vacation of the brilliant cinematic, or catch myself editing the perfection of adjoinment with discrepancy of pety over assumptions.

You're right. There are legs visible underneath Steve McQueen. You would think that the producer
would have had enough money to build an actual tiny raft that floated. Strange.

People who compare books to films are no nothing geeks.
The film stands alone as a Schaffner masterpiece.
You shouldn't be comparing the two.

Hey guys, just read the book and was absoloutely taken back, awesome read! does anyone know any other books that i would like seeing i really enjoyed 'papillon'?
richskee 3 years ago
the book is awesome much better than the film.if you like prison stuff i would reccommend marching powder, damage done and catch me if you can which is also a lot better than the film.they miss too much out in the films
robswift008 3 years ago
Yeah 'Marching Powder' was great... I finnished that a few months ago. I went to borders (book store) and talked to an old guy saying that i read 'Papillon' and i needed something to replace it. He said 'marching Powder' but then he handed me a 900 pager and said read this, he said its one of the best books he'd ever come accross. 'Shantaram' true stroy about an Aussie who escaped prison and fled to India. Reviews are great, just started it last night and am hooked!
richskee 3 years ago
yeah someone reccommended that to me but i couldnt remember the name so you helped me out i'll get that, try escapefrom colditz aswell thats good
robswift008 3 years ago
Read or watch anything about Mark Brandon "CHOPPER" Read it's immense. The film is a cult classic. Really dark, but with some fantastic humour injected in it. All based around real events, real people and a 'true' story.
quazitim1982 3 years ago
charriere did a short sequel just before he died. same time as movie came out. it's called "banco".
catblanket14uk 3 years ago
Yes, I've seen this. Papillon would be in my top 10 favorite movies, but the diver blunder is so obvious I have to relegate it down to top 50 or 100.

you just have to love this movie, just look at Steve McQueen's face when he's just about to jump, preciless!.

It is supposed to be one of 'the'modt haunted places on Earth.
repelghosts 3 years ago

Still as good as it ever was, long live the spirit of Steve McQueen!

in the book the end is different; THIS IS A REAL STORY
scoopmortix 3 years ago
eh, come on, real?
the book is based on charriere's stay in guyana but that doesn't mean it's not fictionalized
one good scene from this film is where the protagonist hallucinates in his cell and is convicted for ' wasting his life ', upload that instead of this melodramatic shit
