great song, great pianist, but this doesnt have half the punch it did back during the 99 tour. watch the DVD for nin at it's peak. everything since Trent came back around '05 NIN just aint what it used to be. With Teeth was half a great album half lazy rock and roll songs (ex "you know who you are" imo) year zero was half a great album, too much lazy "talk" singing. The slip and ghosts had nothing the calibre of his 90's work (ie 'a warm place'). next: an evening with trent reznor?
@trenchrun So his music has evolved over time. You can't control aging. And besides, I think the music he has made while sober - With Teeth, Year Zero, Ghosts, The Slip - are all great albums that showcase Trent's musical talents. With Teeth gave a much needed refreshing surge back into NIN after being away from the scene for so long.
@bopptb Exactly, I completely agree. With your other post as well. Him being sober is actually the best thing to happen to him...if he continued down the drug abuse path, we eventually would hear no more work from him, due to an overdose...like many other great musicians. His soberity shows his maturity, and he still effectively keeps the NIN essence with his work. I can't stand people that are like "I wish he was still on drugs''...grow up you morons. I wish you were raped, you fuckers!
@Shadowsofheartagram I shall accompany you on this great journey of raping these so called "fuckers". Trent doesn't need drugs to be badfuckingass. He can be awesome on drugs or sober, because he's kind of a God.
@trenchrun (cont.) Year Zero made it very clear that Trent hasn't lost a bit of his creative potential. The entire Year Zero storyline came from him, not to mention the songs. I feel like with YZ he really raised the bar as to the amount of creativity that could be poured into the conception of a studio album. Sure, the music wasn't the same as what we had heard before, but if you think about it, isn't every NIN album like that? He's 45 years old. You aren't going to hear another 'Broken'.
@bopptb Totally agree. I love the Fragile, but each album is different, right now I'm listening to TDS, With Teeth is awesome in the summertime... Thats the difference between NIN and every single other band; each album is different. My other 2 fave bands are Guns'n'Roses and Rage Against The Machine, as much as I love them, their music is somewhat similar across their albums.
This is one of many instrumentals NIN has that is so damn epic, they dont need lyrics, this song, without words, speaks to you louder than ever, amazing, sends chills every time I hear it
I know the Wave Goodbye era lineup didn't have the same instrument-switching versatility as the Fragility era one, but I think this song sounded much better with Trent on bass and the bassist (Danny ATT) switching to guitar. It just seemed to let those snakey winding lead parts meld together and screech over the top more clearly...esp. since TR's guit tone/vol. set as a rhythm guitar. Plus he can better do the frontman thing rockin' the repetitive bass groove than focusing on bends.
i don't know why people think its like the last show ever,I heard the plan and all to stop touring as NIN doesn't mean anything about the last show, although he will still be working on material in the studio with the current line up, I give it a couple of years and things might change, Trent is not one to sit on his ass, I know he has some non-music stuff he said he wanted to deal with...sure it has to do with his Year Zero stuff... who knows tho.
The is simply the best epic instrumental song ever. There are no words that can describe this. NIN: Best musical entity ever. No discussion. I've already download this video, won't ever get tired of this
Go figure they're both off one of the most musically diverse and psychologically and emotionally insightful albums of all time (besides the fact that for the most part they're instrumentals). ; )
La Mer and JYLI are by far my favorite NIN songs, and 2 of my fav songs, period. It's slightly depressing that I wasn't able to attend one of these final shows :(
Clearly this was not recorded with a potato. Oh, and Trent fucking rules.

Mike Garson (circa 1973) plays the hell out of the piano on David Bowie's Aladdin Sane... if anyone is interested.

Amazing song, especially with Mike Garson on the piano. I love how the raging guitars and calming piano form a beautiful medley.
