the video, to me, is saying, " i want you, but I can't be yours" ...if you ask me why, all I can say is- I'm a "warrior queen" and I was "born this way". "I'm a New York born to run you down..." Interestingly enough, GaGa is seen running with purpose, but not necessarily with a sense of precise destination. She's driving at the screen, perhaps signaling to the viewers, that "my religion is you". You're my journey. I also think "You & I", to this end, is an ode to her fans.
The video is trying to say, altering the one you love, is as futile and hopeless and impossible and crazy as trying to f*** a mermaid- seeking entry where there is no point of entry. "You and I"" , the video, is an explication and celebration of the crazy things we can do for love, in love. It's a story of two lovers who can't live with each other (mermaid and man), and can't live without each other either. They are both locked in their own spheres of existence.
Like much of GaGa's video work, I think this video too is open to multiple interpretations. I see the entire thing, from beginning to end, as an Americana love story, rendered as countrified fantasia. I also think it's bittersweet in that it is about the impossibility of altering those we love. The mad-scientist-in-barn serves to illustrate this. Try all you want to alter your lover, and fashion them unto your model/mould, even if you do succeed, which is unlikely, will your love be the same?
and it's if she's so good why doesn't her music ever get played on bbc radio 6? the most highly respected music radio station in england, she wanted to be as great as bowie but he's music still gets played on there! funny that!

She always promotes love and being positive. Don't judge her because of some signs of her works. The wedding scene is perhaps the most bittersweet moment in the entire video. It's the projection of a compatibility that they could never achieve. In another time and place, in another world, man and mermaid could have wed, but not in this world, not while she's on a mission and is "married to [her] loneliness".
In conclusion, I interpret "You and I" as a video addressing the bittersweet contradictions (and surgical complications) in seeking companionship whilst retaining a sense of self-hood

"You and I"" , the video, is an explication and celebration of the crazy things we can do for love, in love. Like much of GaGa's video work, I think this video too is open to multiple interpretations. I see the entire thing, from beginning to end, as an Americana love story, rendered as countrified fantasia. I also think it's bittersweet in that it is about the impossibility of altering those we love. The mad-scientist-in-barn serves to illustrate this. Try all you want to alter your lover, and fashion them unto your model/mould, even if you do succeed, which is unlikely, will your love be the same?
