Would you mabye be able to help me? I have a Crouse HInds 3-way (I think, only 1 light tall and 2 yellow one red light) and I cant tell the type. It looks like it says MP but its a little too distorted. Just looking into possibly getting rid of the thing or restoring it. Just wondering if someone could offer some help, thank you.
Generally i find there are Three main Ways you Obtain a Signal...you can Find them being sold on Ebay and other sites on the Net.....you just happen to be at an intersection removing an old signal and you ask for it...and Utility Yards and Scrapyards are my Favorite and most used sources since they are cheaper.
Here's the deal on these kinds of signals. For many years there were 2-color signals and 3-color signals. To let traffic know that a 2-color signal was changing to red, either the signal went all dark for 3 seconds or the red came on over the green for 3 seconds. The green+red was the most common sequence. The old Crouse-Hinds controllers had small dark periods when the light changed colors. I was told the last 2-color signals in NYC were taken down in 2003.
the Dark Interval most likely is done to Warn the Drivers that the light is About to Change...(in a Three Way Signal Yellow serves the Same Purpose)...these may be used still in some places, though i'd expect finding them to be Extreamly Difficult.....i dont think these are illegal,it Depends...in Cities most Traffic Signal i see have Induction loops to detect Cars, this Adjust the Lenght of the Signals sequence in accordence to the Volume of traffic...although some are Automatic.
Usually they just keep RED on longer, overlapping the cross-traffic RED so the cross-traffic RED runners won't collide with fresh GREEN departing vehicles.
Many signals are now using video camera vehicle detection.
RED + GREEN = YELLOW!
From a distance, does one see YELLOW when both lights are illuminated?
But newer GREEN lens have some BLUE added so that RED/GREEN colorblind males can more easily differentiate GREEN from RED.
this is an Older Signal....and the Sequences of these is Much more Complex than those used in Traffic Signals today....these Sequences are considered quite odd by todays Standards....for Example some older three Way Signals Turned Yellow for a Short Time while Switching from Red to Green, this warns Drivers that Traffic Will soon be Free to move.....notice at 0:25 that Both Sides are Red...while one has Red and Green illuminated this is warning that the Signal will soon change.
cool!!

New York City was full of these in the 1950s. They started vanishing by the 60s, but there may yet be a few left.

There were some of these lights on some side streets in Queens in NYC. I am not sure if they are still there though.

Interesting thathe red lamp extinguishes for almostwo seconds before the green illuminates.
Is that dark interval done purposely?
Are these signals still in use anywhere?
I thought the Uniform Traffic Code would have outlawed them.
I can see someone slamming on their brakes when the red lamp illuminates.
Are they timed, only, or also operated by traffic detection?
Thank you.

Why warn when changing from RED to GREEN?
