Leave old rifle as is the most id do is refinish wood if it is really really bad and id only do that on extremely common rifles not on 98's you ruined a perfect military guard not saying 98's are rare but german ones are getting few and far between
@148scalemodeling I agree with you on the most part. But then again, it is his rifle, so he can do waht he wants. But if it had great importance (such as a famous(or infamous) sniper, or soldier) i would protest as well, but if its a run of the mill 98k than its not a huge deal, unless it had great historical meaning to it. That's jsut my reasoning though and i can see your point of view
theres nothing wrong with altering these odl rifles. when the upgrade them, the simply extending and furthing the life and useability of the rifle. i have a mosin-nugant m44 rifle that ive resently upgraded with rails, muzzle break, synthetic thumhole stock and such. guy say to me that ive ruined it..i say no, i got the rifle for 80.00 bucks, still have all the stock parts and ive made a nice, everyday rifle that helped make history, instead of it sitting in a case till it rust...
Larry, please stop tearing up and ruining the historic value of a perfectly good rifle. This is what happened to the 1903 Springfields, people modified the hell out of them and now its damn near impossible to find one, let alone find one without civilian modifications
Various museums have plenty of original arms. They are meant to Shoot, not look at. He takes an OK firearm and turns out an Excellent firearm. What's wrong with that? Modification probably makes up over Half of a gunsmith's trade, as opposed to repair. The main reason people modded so many surplus rifles is because they were plentiful and Much cheaper than civilian hunting/target rifles. Try to buy the equivalent (reliability and accuracy) Remington or Winchester for the price.
This is the most UNAmerican thing I have ever heard and I see it on gun forums all the time. A person can do whatever they want with their property, That's a fundimental American Right, and you have no right to tell them other wise. I see 03 Springfield come up for sale a lot. So what if you can't afford an 03. Stop your whining and don't tell others what they can or can not do!!!

you could give me all the tools needed, and I would probably still mess this up 100 times in a row.
