  • mark foster's dad!

  • gosh darn, why do I always fall in love with people who are dead?

  • Bit of a John Cooper Clarke interval between the songs. EVIDENTLY CHICKENTOWN! Alongside Joy Division, what more could you want? Oh and this was on my -12th birthday. I wasn't even a sperm yet!

  • This happened 4 days away from my 2nd birthday. Joy Division is the BEST.

  • Just watched "24 Hour Party People" on the tele. The bloke who portrayed Ian Curtis is awful

  • FUCKING BASS SOUND !!! peter hook is the best !

  • He's completely lost in the music! Love it!

  • they recreated this well on "Control"

  • la mejor banda que ha existido y podrá existir!!!

  • fantastico

  • Comment removed

  • Look at that dancing and tell me who's lost control... x)

  • cool i am very talented and open

  • HE COULD HAVE LIVED LONGER

  • hehe come to my room I'm all burning

  • hihi i love uk

  • Best fuckin band ever. God I love em

  • hm i am ur girl toy

  • The best version for this that I ever heard. Does anyone knows if this exist on audio/video proper recording?

  • @ethanhuber I'm sure I have heard it elsewhere...on the Still compilation maybe?

  • Thanks, I'll look for it there. Man, that growling sound he does at the end of the chorus just gives me the shivers.

  • @ethanhuber ....just blows me away.....

  • Great. A version without Bono.

  • I love how you can tell his dancing is really truly his expression of the music not just some gag to draw people in

  • Incredible.

  • my path..

    Anton Corbijn ->Control->Ian Curtis->Joy Division-> New Order.

    Ace->Ace->Ace->Ace->nvm.

  • @ZzZ0ne Same here. Brilliance kept growing, 'til I checked out New Order and just felt "...meh" and backed up one step.

  • he's so beautiful!

  • QUE SER TAN HERMOSO IAN CURTIS POR DIOS!!! DANIELA TE QUIERE, LOQUITO!!!

  • 9-15 is my birthday :'D

  • @steave707 mine too!!! brillant Sept virginz. own!!!

.p,s, i never reply ever... but it's my birthday!!!!... so let's have one!! enjoy the music!!!!

  • Don't want it to stop!!! RIP Ian..

  • nothing quite like it

  • My god, he is screaming through the way his body moves.

This is almost a life-changing experience - watching Ian in his music enhanced frenzy.

I've never seen anything quite like this.

Suddenly I want to cry and laugh at the same time. Amazing.

  • This coming sunday (august 7) one of the Dutch networks (Nederland 2) will broadcast Anton Corbijn's debut and critically acclaimed film "CONTROL" at 23.20

that evening. And if Corbijn's video of Joy Division's "Atmosphere" is anything to go by, I'll bet his hommage to one of The Greatist Artists "Pop" has ever known,

will be without a doubt of the same magnitude and spellbound quality. I for one,

can't wait to hear some of those "Unknown Pleasures" again. IAN was (and still is) MAGICAL

  • what is Ian Saying at 3:14?

  • @hazeWUT It's John Cooper Clarke doing 'Chickentown'. The full length version of this vid has his poem in the middle, as per @truedude86.

  • @hazeWUT Sorry, my mistake - look for Transmission on its own and you'll find JCC doing Chickentown at the beginning. It's incredible.

  • Just watched control on hbo I am amazed at the resemblanceof Sam riley who portrays Ian. I am a new fan

  • Awesome

  • these riffs. his voice. what is this magic?

  • John Cooper Clarke's Chickentown in the middle

  • Fuck the Beatles and Jesus Christ. Joy Division is bosssss. Ian Curtis, Ma nigga RIP. for all u damn haters, I ain't give a damn what u think. U be the biggest motherfucking fans.

  • @stefsaysfu2 i completely agree

  • Joy division fans was't born yet

  • it is beyond me why ANYONE would dislike this. Are these people totally without soul? I can get the same thrill from Beethoven, Stravinsky, 808state, NIN etc. If it's great music it strikes a chord, touches a nerve, whatever cliché you want. The Gaga generation have missed out if they don't get Joy Division.

  • ...what was on your mind, Ian?

  • lol the two most liked comments are the ones that i resent most and now plague youtube- the ol' 'mainstream music is shit blah blah blah this is real music' and the classic- 'x people missed the like button blah blah blah arent i clever'

  • @Cleggy238 1 person is a monumental AIDS magnet

  • She's lost controoooOOOOOLLL!!!!!

  • If you miss ALL the band you can hear Most of the band with New Order... they really got into the time stamp of the 80s later though.

  • I MISS "ALL" THE BAND

  • ''listen to the silence, let it ring on''

    forever, fucking right Ian

  • Peter Hook is such a good bassist - I mean technically he isn't up to much, but his basslines are pure genius. He is in my top 5 along with Les Claypool, Flea, Matt Freeman & John Entwistle.

  • @captain94ace ...where is Paul McCartney in that list? I respect differences of opinion, but this is too important of a matter to let you get away with this crime of taste.

  • @glueturkey Loooool - I appreciate Macca very much as a songwriter & as a bassist, but those guys have influenced me a lot more, although I probably have been influenced by him as well - do you play bass, if so who are your "top 5"?(if Jaco's mame comes up I may have to kill you) :P

  • @captain94ace as a bassplayer it is my right to join in this coversation :) I'd say my top 5 are (in no real order)hooky, simon gallup, mani, andy rourke and paul mccartney

  • @PrisonBreakFilms Sweet - what bass do you play? :)

  • @captain94ace fender jazz bass

  • el puto amo joder....JODER

  • how he got a vocal melody to match this dischordant non lyrical pellmell....i will never know

  • These just make me want to cry for the loss of Mr. Curtis.

  • They have influence not only rock/goth and new wave scene but also the electronic dance scene, Ian died but his spirit and unique talent remained with the band that later evolved and became the new order. They combined new wave and electronic dance, and became one of the most highly influential bands of the 1980s. New Order's hit blue moday is the best-selling 12-inch single of all time.

  • she lost control

  • Who is Stephen Morris or Steve Brotherdale?

  • Who is Stephen Morris or Steve Brotherdale?

  • Please, people. Ignore the ignorance! Brilliant band and influential until this day, 30+ years later. And when Ian dances, he means it!

  • When I was a baby and my older sister had the radio on nearly full blast whenever these two songs would air (well as long as she could keep it at that volume before Dad would yell turn it down) this music made me stand at and pay attention. Probably the main reason why these two songs are my top favorite joy division songs. For that I thank my sister and our big brown motorola radio that formed my musical tastes. Rest in Peace Ian.

  • 71 people hit dislike in an epileptic loss of control.

  • @Cleggy238 so tie rags to their feet and rope on their necks.... they can twitch and mop the floor......

  • I m addicted of Joy Division

i m 30 and they were so modern

all the stuff around have had influence of Joy Division

    Sav

  • Joy Division owns it all. Owens it all... dance dance dance the radio... So handsome.

  • MustHaveRocknRoll

    Pretentious claptrap.

His voice is murder and he clearly was a manic depressive. He took his own life for godsake .

    A step short of screaming.

  • @andrew67 Can't see your problem with this band.

    His voice is murder?

    I don't think so.

Speaking with lots of short sentences is though.

  • Comment removed

  • @andrew67 You sir, are the problem with this world. An overexaggeration? No, you're a prick.

  • @mfraser08

M y sentiments exactly his points he iterated are very weak at best he clearly has no understanding of cult status & following and I dont see why people have to come onto a track and spout BS the point he makes about sheep is pathetic i bet he is into status quo . . . actually i just checked his channel and its clearly obvious he has no taste and he is into puppets people like that just hear what they and make an analytical assumption when they know nothing of anything . . muppet

  • He is an ordinary to awful voice.

Death has brought him iconic status.

This music is for those who want to appear to be hip,or those with manic depressive tendencies.

I want to be seen as being alternative ,dirge.

When there is nothing original about being a sheep.

  • @andrew67

there music is art. his lyrics are poetry. and his voice was the beautiful medium for his lyrics. you dont know anything about good music.

  • @MustHaveRocknRoll

just check his channel out enough said !

  • @andrew67 You seem very pretentious.

  • @andrew67 have you been smoking glue?

  • @andrew67

Each to their own opinion but i dont get why people like you come on tracks like this & spout your nonsensical drivval you clearly have no concept of time feeling & space & where they come from & what their diy ethic was all about & they was just a small bunch of ordinary lads from the north west of england even if curtis was still alive this music would still stand the stand the test of time he had bad epilepsy & was on strong meds. your points are very weak @ best you know nothing !

  • Non-interesting fact: The drum parts from this two songs are similar, and the bass lines are pretty much interchangeable.

  • @fakeis751 The bass lines are pretty much interchangeable. I've seen some bizarre statements on Youtube but that's right up there.....! What the fuck are you on about?

  • @moyajc I'm talking about the fact that you can sing the vocal melody of Transmission over the bass line of She's Lost Control, and you also can sing the vocal melody of She's Lost Control over the bass line of Transmission. See, that's what interchangeable means.

  • I love how live's are alternate versions of the songs (in general)

  • 70 idiots!

  • who are the 70 idiots that dislike this?

  • uber brilliant!

  • you, see - he's just really doing it, for real, SO many singers/bands these days just care about being cool and looking authentic instead of just giving it 200% and letting it fall where ever . .

  • advert for 'Katy Perry's latest album n this video, hahahaha

  • the bassist's style is so progressive and awesome, before I knew joy division someone told me my playing reminded him of JD, I looked it up and I fell in love with this band. Step by step I changed style to new-wave, stuff. Went to an art school and changed friend. Now, years later my bass playing has changed but at a gig some guy came to and told me I made the band sound like JD, It was the most nostalgic moment of my entire life. Good job JD, Hoping to see a new order gig one day

  • also rip ian, helped me through difficult times m8 , play this in my band now as a tribute, you've achieved as much now as u did when u were with us, thanks

  • These 2 recordings are on The Best of Joy Division Box Set; it's cool cuz you hear the amazing music and you already have the video in your head.

  • Hey, Lady Gaga, This is a real dance!

  • @MrUlquiorra04 - One. Don't mention that Gaga nobody here. Have some respect for the band, man. THIS IS JOY DIVISION.

  • I would give whatever to know what was going on in that complicated, puzzled and passionate mind of Ian's right there, just to wonder what was going on in his head, what he was thinking. :) I wish I could have seen them live so much...Rest in peace Ian mate, you're missed :)

  • if this one performance had been all they ever did they would still have been one of the most exciting and seminal bands in the entire history of music. it's all here, it's all completely compelling and it's all completely thrilling.

long live the mighty joy division.

  • I was born 13 years too late :(

  • salut. je cherche une grosse aux gros nichons. t'as ça ?

  • At the end the the bass and guitar are both scaling up, then they alternate. So cool.

  • The crowd is so funny to watch, because they have NO idea how to take this band they are watching!! Joy Division and Ian was so deep, dark, powerful, ahead of their time, and would punch your inner soul so hard that you never knew what hit ya till the next morning when you awoke!! EPIC !

  • love.

  • better than reading books of Lord Byron

  • damn i want that voice

  • surges of energy brought on by passion, joyous to watch, yet tragic at the same time.

    RIP Ian

  • @ 1:34, what's up with the crowd? If i were there, i'd be going mental

  • Oh fuck how I love this man.Brilliant!

  • he couldn't dance for his life, but by God could he write songs, and sing em

  • I can't decide on what song has better lyrics! fuck it let's just dance to some fucking joy division

  • I ve had an orgasm on 2:22

  • This bass line is pretty sick. Hank & Cupcakes version has a really cool bass line too, it's just different. Love the focus on the bass though. Gives it that cool deep dark sound.

  • It mentions 'New Order' at 0:55...

  • Those people standing at the front are so fucking lucky.

  • This should be an instructional video on "How to Rock!".

  • @jerseyfame

according to carl Brutananadilewski, from aqua teen hunger force, "you don't need no instructions, to know how to rock!"

  • He wasn't really a gentlemen, cheated on his wife and little girl don't forget but he was a great musician with many troubles, his legacy lives on!

  • Dance! Dance! Dance to the radio!

  • the guitar tone is immense

  • @Rambersiki; one never knows...;) LOL

  • @Rambersiki; Muahaha...I spelled "harangue" incorrectly on purpose just to see if your I.Q. was above 75...LOL...I see you looked it up and admonished me apropriately...typical...LOL...HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!...lol

  • @Fleshcucumber1 Haha, sure you did ;)

  • @Rambersiki; I'm glad you're impressed....your inane drivel is refreshing after being haranged by the stuffed shirts in the circle I travel in...LOL

  • @Fleshcucumber1 I try not to waste my speeches of passion on individuals like yourself. Unlike you, I don't get hard by placing pointless incorrectly spelt words on a Youtube page of a band I don't even enjoy. A life, add it to your list, I hope Santa's kind. Merry Christmas.

  • @Rambersiki; LOL....your feeble attempt at dry british wit as it were...Is pathetically feeble...LOL...caw...eh wot.

  • @Fleshcucumber1 Your attempt at being a pompous prick is impressive.

  • Had the pleasure of visiting his memorial stone the other month. The amount of notes left there by people shows what an inspiration he has been and will be.

  • boliverful1....I just watched it and I could not agree with you more.Any "TRUE" music fan should watch it.i saw New Order in "87 w/ echo and the bunneymen and Gene loves jezabel....Great show.Peter Hook kicks ass!!! Check out "Bad Lieutenant-Never cry another tear." It is Gordons' new band.Actually it came out in 09.

  • If you have not seen the movie Control, based on the formation of Joy Division and Ian Curtis' downward spiral, please do. It's truly amazing... Stephen Morris' drumming and Ian Curtis' dancing are so damned original it scares people. I can't believe I overlooked them while they existed...

  • @Rambersiki; LOL...your thinly veiled attempt at masking your hatred for my youtube handle is transparent...you're pathetic...LOL...LOL

  • @Fleshcucumber1 Yes, I realised after posting it last night how pathetic I was, getting angry at you. However, i see you have some more LOL's to place up your arse. Now go and be a good lad and wank over some formulas.

  • DANCE DANCE DANCE DANCE DANCE TO THE RADIO!!!

  • Legendary! Sadly, They don't make music like this anymore. Ian was a genius!

Fuck the 67 haters and Fleshcumer1 who disliked this (probably Lady Gaga or Radio Disney fans).

  • you are witnessing a successfully bad pointless comment by Fleshtrollcucumber...

happens all the time hee hee, ha ha!!

  • you are witnessing the first recorded attempt at bad theatrics trying to mask bad musical content...LOL...happens all the time now...lol

  • @Fleshcucumber1 Bad theatrics? Or pure emotion. Bad musical content? I still to this day haven't seen a better drummer than Morris. I haven't read better lyrics than Ian's. This band has inspired so many people. I don't normally get angry on here, but you're a cunt. Go and shove you're LOL's up your arse.

  • LOCO QUE BUENA BANDA MENNN.!!

  • How 67 people are able not to like anything that has "Transmission" in I'll never know. One of the most perfect songs ever written, and "She's Lost Control" isn't too bad either.

  • RIP Ian !

You're dead but you alive in my heart, you helped me in hard time, thanks for it...

    p.s. 67 stupid idiots

  • @JohnnyBgood632 only record shops left x x

  • @JohnnyBgood632 nice respectful post on joy division alotta a-holes on here ive noticed :)

  • nice amount of distortion on the bass. awsome :)

  • Stephen and Peter are rocking!!!!!!!!!

  • so passionate...gotta love it

  • god, i'm so in love with ian

  • Joy Division a marqué ma vie à jamais. Ian on ne t'oubliera jamais. Eternal Love

  • Intense! Joy Division is the best!

  • the 67 people who disliked this video can go listen to lady gaga!

  • @MrElectricdude KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK 4 sure !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @pennylain90 thats depressing

  • They're definitely best live. <3

  • when I look at them how they move on stage I can see Interpol, or I should say it the other way round!! Especially drummer, bass and guitar player.

  • bass rules

  • where is a time machine when you need it?

  • Did you see that? "The voice of youth"?! They're wearing flared trousers!

  • i though that JD was more underground but apparently theyre more famous than i expected, the other day i was with a friend and i told her, hey lemme introduce u to warsaw( early JD) and she said oh i know that band and their singer ian curtis didnt he commit suicede? and i was stunned for the fact that she actually knew about them :P when none of my friends or family or basicly anybody i know never heard of them, which is sad and ignorant IMO :p

  • thanks for upload!!

  • This is singing from the fucking heart!!! Ian Curtis was freaky dancin 10 years before the Mondays were even formed. And that wasnt a dig at the Mondays, i love them too. M&M ect never had a stage presence like this.

  • Ian has dead eyes.

  • These guys dressed like squares, yet were some of the coolest humans ever.

  • @geniuswaitress Dressing like that in the uk (especially in the north of england) wasnt "square" in the late seventies early eighties. I remember going from bein a punk to havin a wedge haircut an wearin suede slip ons lol.I went to a club in liverpool one night to watch a group called Tanz der youth when the gaff emptied Joy Division came on later. I stood right at the front.I had never heard of them before an i stood there gobsmacked! what a night...

  • Ian Curtis<3<3<3

  • Nothing about the bands clothes, attitude or sound gives away what era they're from.

Some of the glam clowns around today could learn from this.

  • @Polyfusia its part of their image though, theyre dead inside. if they wore awesome clothes that looked cool, it would detract from their live presence IMO

  • @KRyPToNiTe1923 Of course it would. That's what I'm saying. Minimalism never ages. There's nothing about it to place in time. A blank chalkboard always looks the same, no matter the year.

  • @Polyfusia "Minimalism never ages." Well said good man.
