This makes me so emotional. The shirts together represent everything they wanted, which was to be together in simple union. The 'normality' of the shirts hanging in the wardrobe also shows this, as all they wanted was to have a 'normal' relationship, which they were unable to to do.
First time I watched this film, I cried so much. Still cry watching just this tiny excerpt. Beautifully scripted, scored and directed.
i cry every time i see this scene... so bitter, so heartbreaking, so realistic at the same time.... I also think that the music score, makes it even more emotional... By the way: what is "i swear" implying here? Any suggestions? Anyone?
@philipposathina I just watched this movie yesterday, and I think that the "I swear..." is supposed to mean different things to people. Jack, in the beginning, said he never "swears", so I think there's something to do with it. But I also agree with what someone in here said, he is also swearing he will love him forever. But again, the person who wrote this movie (forgot her name) said there's a lot of interpretations to that scene...pick your favorite. xD
@girlsnextdoorkendra thank you so much! i was missing the scene where jack says that he never swears. If so, then it's obvious that what the script means by "i swear" in the end, does make a reference of both... so, i swear in the final scene wants to say that " in spite of the fact that no oaths should be taken, i swear i'll always love you". Thanks again, i think i must watch the film for one more time (fourth!)
@ombretard hmmmm , one could assume that, but there are no indications about this, i mean if that was all about the script should've made it more evident, should'nt it? I mean, ok, i could easily assume that all he means by " i swear" is, "i will never forget you", but again there should be smthg concrete in the script, leadin to this assumption..
my heart just got broken, i have no heart anymore.. Heath Ledger are one of the talented actors out there.. or he WAS. So sad that he died! fucking Heath, a fucking hero! <3
I never cry to movies. Never. NEVER. I really don't. But when I saw Brokeback Mountain and this final scene, I broke down in tears like I never had before. Everything is in this scene, everything that a man can have in life. And Ang Lee showed this in simple ways like two shirts hanging on a hanger. This is ART.
The first time I watched it was in the theatre. I didn't bring any tissues, because I didn't know about the break-your-heart ending. My shirt sleeve was soaked by the end of the movie. Forever on my top 5 favorite movie list.
This movie was beautiful, and I cried like a baby for the last 20 minutes. Trust me, I never cry when I watch a movie. But this was... damn. So emotional <3
I've just watched the movie for the seccond time, and this scene just gets to me. I cry like a baby. Its so freaking perfect. Heath was a fuckin genius actor.
OMG this scene is so sad, I can´t avoid feeling like crying every time I watch it....This movie is awesome, the story is so unpredictable and sad at the same time!!!
I love this movie !!! Love is love dosent matter if it's a man or a woman or a man and a man love is everything and we all deserve to have that in ur lives with the person we want to have it with
the last 20 minutes of this movie is the most heart wrenching, punched in the stomach, just heart stabbing thing ever :( every damn time. i miss heath so much too :(
This ending is the best I've ever seen! Heath ledger plays his character so well, you can feel his loneliness through the screen. It depresses me when he looks at that postcard, because he was never really happy, except if he was with jack. Now jack is death, he isn't happy at all. And the camera work, the last shot with the window en the view, portraits that so good! He's in nobody's land, on his own. It makes me sad en makes me cry like a baby!!
Playing Ennis in Brokeback was Heath Ledger's finest hour. He's Austrailan, yet he captured the essence of the lone, tragic Wyoming cowboy's voice, character, and body language better than any American actor could have. It's a work of art.
I loved this movie so much. I'm glad they found two actors who were very serious about the subject matter and didn't let homophobes and the controversy surrounding it ruin their vision to create such powerful performances. Heath thought of it as two human beings who couldn't fight the powerful force that is love. They just happened to be two men
I love this movie. I cryed specially in the final part when he says " Jack, I swear " and the music sounds louder and you just feel like that's your love story and you remember when you felt in love with someone just like these two men, with that person you are thinking about all the fuking day and you can't get out from your mind and you don't care about anything else ... Well anyways, love is everything that we need :D
@GENERALLEEJ he didn't love that wife. He was forced to get married with a woman because people wouldn't have allowed him to be with his true love. So fuck off you dumbasses
@an1cafe No one forced him to do marry that girl. He could have stayed single and had homosexual relations in private and without anyone else knowledge. He wasted the girls life. She live in a loveless marriage. Very unfair for her. And as for calling me a 'dumb ass', I hear you but reject your allegation. I respect your opinion even though I don't agree with it. That doesn't make me or you a dumb ass. It just means we have differing opinions. Thanks for your feed back.
In the end it's NOTHING about gender,it's ALL about person... And it can happen to anyone.Love really has no boundaries at all:-) And guys who rape sb or cheating on their partners or do sick things to children and stuff, they exist but on both sides! Why is it so simple for hetero to make it homo stuff only?Anyway thank you Ang Lee cause now I know better than just thoughtlessly judge.
j'aime ce film mais les mentalités n'ont pas changé il y aura toujours des cons sur terre et une grande partie d'entre eux sont instinctivement homophobes
@an1cafe I don´t get that, I´ve watched this movie like 20 times and I still don´t get what he means with "Jack, I swear", do you know it by any chance????
@magico008 "I noticed that when he first discovered the shirts in Jack's parents' house, Jack's shirt was on the outside w/ Ennis' shirt inside, but now, they're reversed so Jack's inside of him, inside his heart. He fastens a snap on Jack's shirt then straightens the brokeback mountain postcard then states the line, which I think he's meaning, "Jack, I swear I will always love you and hold you in my heart."
@UppsalaBaronen I think it's more an angry sort of statement...like 'I swear I'm so fucking angry that I fell in love with you, and that I didn't run away with you, and that I didn't get to say goodbye and stuff.' Or even like 'I swear you don't know how much I love you.' I dunno...just my opinion!
@heathclifffe I think that sounds like a really good explanation....You can just feel the pain that he is going through, knowing he passed up the opportunity to act on his love for Jack. This scene just breaks my heart.
Such a fantastic movie, and this scene... It's just so calm and subtle, but just heartbreaking. The music is beautiful. Always makes me cry, amazing movie <3
i dun know why everytime I see this scence, i remember this scence, my heart feels empty... "Everyone got a brokeback mountain in their hearts." Geniune saying from Ann Lee
I'm a girl and remember seeing this in the cinema with a guy friend and being in tears at this scene....but then turning round to my mate and seeing tears pouring down his cheeks too. I was really impressed by how moving this film was/is - really beautiful *sniffs*
(oh and btw my mate is as straight as a die as well)
before mr. ledger died....i had 2 shirts etwined tatooed on my arm...with caption jack i swear.......i translate it as....jack if you only knew what my real feelings was and if we could turn back time.....a masterpiece that the stupid oscars overlooked
I have a question as well, not regarding this scene, but the one when Ennis visits Jack's parents and the father is talking about Jack wanted to build a farm with some else. First he wanted to do that with Ennis, but the last year he was talking about somenone else, what was he talking about?
Jack had been seeing someone else in Texas (the guy with the talkative wife) because Ennis wasn't able to give him what he wanted out of their r'ship.
something i noticen in the hole movie is that ennis always gives excuses no to do something someone suggests i you know what i mean, like when jack said they should move to mexico and ennis said he wasnt a traveller and in this final scene he gives an excuse not to go to thw wedding but then he is like: they should get another cowboy, my daughter is getting married, its like he changed
It's open for interpretation... my opinion is that the whole scene is about remorse/regret that he didn't know his true feelings until it was too late, but now that he does, he knows he would have made different choices.... hence he could mean something like 'i swear....[i would have lived a life with you/loved you as you loved me/protected you, etc.]
Also note how Ennis's shirt is on the outside now....
sorry got a bit carried away but there so much symbolism in this movie - I LOVE IT!!!
well, it means a lot of things, which is why the sentence is left unfinished like that. It is a love declaration, if you will. You know how Ennis never could talk about his feelings, least of all to Jack? Jack was always the one saying things like I miss you so much, and suggesting they move in together. This is when Ennis finally promises that he loved him, and only him, and that he was everything, even if he couldn't say it while he was alive.
My gut renches and my heart aches just by thinking about this movie. The actors, the setting, the music and the story... all add up to making this movie the most painful but beautiful movie ever.
how ironic....the shirts r hung in the closet...it's like to e end ennis never came out of e closet. shouldn't he put it out for e world to c his deep love 4 jack....i think e saddest part in all this is what a waste of lives....
He did not fight for their love when Jack was alive. Now he lives to regret it for the rest of HIS life. If you ever lost someone who you know you truly loved and who truly loved you back for sheer stupidity, inmaturity, indisciple and - in short - for NO GOOD REASON, then you can grasp the full dimension of this tragic ending! It is the kind of situation that people will ponder briefly and then nod their heads at it with nothing more to say than: "Oh, man, that really IS a crying shame."
And he would wake sometimes in grief, sometimes with the old sense of joy and release; the pillow sometimes wet, sometimes the sheets.
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.
When the postcard came--thirty cents--he pinned it up in his trailer, brass-headed tack in each corner. Below it he drove a nail and on the nail he hung the wire hanger and the two old shirts suspended from it. He stepped back and looked at the ensemble through a few stinging tears.
"Jack, I swear--" he said, though Jack had never asked him to swear anything and was himself not the swearing kind.
Around that time Jack began to appear in his dreams, Jack as he had first seen him, curly-headed and smiling and bucktoothed, talking about getting up off his pockets and into the control zone, but the can of beans with the spoon handle jutting out and balanced on the log was there as well, in a cartoon shape and lurid colors that gave the dreams a flavor of comic obscenity. The spoon handle was the kind that could be used as a tire iron.
I always took "Jack I swear" to mean that even though Ennis had been with other people, and despite the fact that he always turned Jack down when offered to run away with him, that Ennis sweared his feelings were true and that he had always loved Jack more than anything else.
In this movie died one and lived one thinking of him
now look what really happend to date

How many times did I say "Nico, I swear... " ? That expresion comes out when you have so much things to say and ... you can't say anything.
This movie is amazing.

I have a question as well, not regarding this scene, but the one when Ennis visits Jack's parents and the father is talking about Jack wanted to build a farm with some else. First he wanted to do that with Ennis, but the last year he was talking about somenone else, what was he talking about?
Nesh16041972 2 years ago
Jack had been seeing someone else in Texas (the guy with the talkative wife) because Ennis wasn't able to give him what he wanted out of their r'ship.

something i noticen in the hole movie is that ennis always gives excuses no to do something someone suggests i you know what i mean, like when jack said they should move to mexico and ennis said he wasnt a traveller and in this final scene he gives an excuse not to go to thw wedding but then he is like: they should get another cowboy, my daughter is getting married, its like he changed
valicenti07 2 years ago 4
What Ennis says is : "Jack, I swear"... What does this mean? I have no Idea...
carolitohoney 2 years ago
It's open for interpretation... my opinion is that the whole scene is about remorse/regret that he didn't know his true feelings until it was too late, but now that he does, he knows he would have made different choices.... hence he could mean something like 'i swear....[i would have lived a life with you/loved you as you loved me/protected you, etc.]
Also note how Ennis's shirt is on the outside now....
sorry got a bit carried away but there so much symbolism in this movie - I LOVE IT!!!
BROKEBACKNAZ 2 years ago 4
Aww, how could I have not seen Ennis' shirt on the outside? Thanks for mentioning. I can't get over how beautiful this movie is!
lapooh 2 years ago
might be Ennis regrets not listening to jack to go with him,as he is alone now...

@carolitohoney
well, it means a lot of things, which is why the sentence is left unfinished like that.

"Jack, I swear--" he said, though Jack had never asked him to swear anything and was himself not the swearing kind.
bean90 2 years ago 4
Around that time Jack began to appear in his dreams, Jack as he had first seen him, curly-headed and smiling and bucktoothed, talking about getting up off his pockets and into the control zone, but the can of beans with the spoon handle jutting out and balanced on the log was there as well, in a cartoon shape and lurid colors that gave the dreams a flavor of comic obscenity. The spoon handle was the kind that could be used as a tire iron.

This will go down as one of my top best endings ever! The entire movie was beyond great.
I loved how he tucked Jack's shirt inside his own and "Jack I swear..." just made the ending all the more powerful. Great movie.
tadpolesexxx 2 years ago 7
I always took "Jack I swear" to mean that even though Ennis had been with other people, and despite the fact that he always turned Jack down when offered to run away with him, that Ennis sweared his feelings were true and that he had always loved Jack more than anything else.

I took it to mean that, and that perhaps he would do it differently, if he could go back.
