  • The acting on this show was unmatched by any other sitcom. Considering the upbringing of Roseanne and Jackie, it seems like these are the things they always wanted to say-but were either ignored or afraid to say. I love how Dan and Rosie want something better for their kids-even though the kids rarely saw it, Reminds me of my folks so much.

  • This poem is amazing. It feels like this poem wasn't ment for a t.v. sitcom, it feels like it was ment to be one of those famous poems you read in books by the world's most famous poets. It's so simple but so true c:

  • fav part ever

  • WHO in their right mind could dislike this? Were they never teenagers themselves?

  • I didn't watch this show when it was on prime time, but mom and I would watch it because it came on between Cosby on Nick at Nite. This was an excellent poem, and pretty much sums up what it's like to be a 13-year-old girl who isn't in the "cool kids group." I know, because I was one once. And still feel like it!

  • i love this show but this is my fav because it shows insecurities that we all have....

  • This show was actually really underrated, it had amazing writers and I think the acting is unmatched by any other sitcom even today. This scene always makes me cry.

  • The girl at 2:41 kinda looks like Ziva from NCIS o.O

  • roseanne is an excellent show. darlene is the funniest

  • I miss watching Roseanee

  • This is when I started to watch the show. Darlene is my favorite.

  • this, i think, is my favorite part of any episode of roseanne. this scene has always stuck out in my mind. i love darlene's character and i love this poem. i just really love the whole scene :)

  • There hasn't been a show this well written, poignant, and brilliant in a very long time, if ever. SO realistic. That's why it was so popular; Americans were craving a family that was actually real, and didn't seem sanitized with perfect kids, house, marriage, etc.

  • Sara Gilbert...She plays on "Hawthorne" now.. she is a great actress

  • it makes me cry whenever i see this. i'm 19. lmao. awww darlene<3

  • @xceeejy right......im 13 and this makes me cry like a baby =P.....i wish they had reunions for all great sitcoms like growing pains and full house

  • this is the reason that i loved this character SOOO much.

  • POSTER - T/Y for posting this poem - When I first saw it, years ago, it REALLY HIT ME DEEP, comin' from a lil kid !!

  • I think it's Pachelbel's Canon.

  • It's Packelbel's Canon in D.

    played....horribly..

  • okay, there were times when the music cue was really good, like in this scene when the poem is done. it very cool, well written too bad last few sec were cut off

  • i wish i could write a poem like that best poem i ever heard

  • @rbd43091 You are very mean.

  • Absolutely one of the greatest shows of all time. By far the most realistic. I personally think Roseanne is a comedic genius, and, regardless of what one thinks of her personally, she contributed a masterpiece with this series... Truly incredible.

  • I have been getting homophobic personal messages, and replies to comments I have made like the one above by FALCON2400 for the past several months. • i watch this video all the time.

it makes me cry because it reminds me of myself in many ways. it's touching and i would'nt have wanted the poem to be any diffrent and i would'nt have wanted the actors to be any other people but them

  • dude......ur a bich and geta life

  • i like this poem for some odd reason

  • Love this.

  • Everytime I hear this it reminds me of how hard being a teenager can be. It's very touching and sad. Roseanne's show was so great people don't give her enough credit, they only remember how difficult she was said to be. I hope she does more television. The girl who played Darlene was wonderful too, and so young. What a talent.

  • @donnjames I totally hear you.. Luckily, I keep noticing that "Roseanne" is listed on every "Best shows of all time" lists, and Entertainment weekly had it as the third best tv show of all time. So I think it does get the recognition; and let's not forget it was always in the top 5 for the first 6 seasons (and at times number 1 or 2).

  • this made me cry when i was younger.

  • You can kind of tell that Darlene would eventually turn into a goth in her teen years when she recited this poem.

  • haha I knew it before the peom

  • Does anyone know the name of the song the band is playing at the end of this episode?

  • pachelbel's canon in d.

  • such a great show, there's not 1 bad episode =D.

  • (finale)

  • this show was great

  • I never really liked the show but this poem was very profound. Sometimes television offers more than just mind numbing bullshit.

  • lol maybe i'll get lucky solitary confinement .. funniest part

  • "To whom it concerns, Darlene's homework will be late, it fell on her pancakes, and stuck to her plate", ROFL i love this show.

  • at 1:43 look behind jackie to the right a man is sleeping hahha

  • Ah-ha-ha! Nice.

  • There will never be another sitcom like this on american television, and that is sad. It was such a groundbreaking series. Much more realistic than anything else on tv, before or since.

  • Yeah, it was. Roseanne was one of the very, very rare sitcoms that actually showed very realistic events and issues that families that are poor can come across.

  • u wanna see what poors come across? go to the hoods of detroit.......ull find very realistic events of ppl knocking u down and putting their foot in ur ass.....its a very realistic event trust me

  • I live this show

  • guys don't watch tomboys when cruising the hall... the truth hurts. this is one of my favorite moments from roseanne. i wish i had written a kick ass poem in highschool and read it in front of everyone.

  • Did anyone else notice the guy in 1:44 sleeping? haha I was sad and then I saw that guy. I was wondering if they did it on purpose or if he was actually sleeping

  • He's sleeping the WHOLE time. Haha.

  • I love Roseanne. This is one of my fav ones. Makes me teary every time.

  • this scene is why Roseanne is my favorite show.

  • I just thought I'd mention it to whom it concerns....

  • solitary confinement lol

  • To whom it concerns,I just turned 13 too short to be quarterback...to plain to be queen.

That line always brings a tear to my eye.

  • Me too, that's when my eyes started watering up.

  • This is one of my favorite episodes of Roseanne. Great performances by all the actors! I love the looks on Roseanne and Jackie's face when the poem turns sad. And Darlene's recitation was amazing! Incredible show.

  • this is the scene that did it for me. it's so real.

  • It's just the best TV show EVER

it's not only about being funny but being real. They r a funny sarcastic family but they deal with the same stuff real people do in real life i'm addicted to it!!!

  • Love it!

  • this is the very first roseanne show ive ever watched, which got me addicted to the sshow. i have all the seasons on dvd. anyhoo, i playgerized(however you spell that) that poem for school. glad i wasnt caught. i was just a little kid.

    i love you ROSEANNE!

  • made me cry also reminds me of myself

  • thiisz made me cry`TWiiC3

  • this is one of my most FAVORITE episode

  • I loved the set-up from this episode. Darlene's teacher gives the poem some special recognition and Darlene has to read it publicly. Darlene protests saying that it was some stupid thing she wrote in a couple minutes, and no one is ever allowed to hear the poem. Then Darlene reads it and it obviously starts out as a fake excuse note, but Darlene started putting down random thoughts from her heart and turns the note in. Then we find out how personal it is and how talented Darlene is.

  • oh i loved this poem. i think in a way to the poem was to her mom, roseanne.

  • I love Darlene she was my favorite character =D

  • LOVE Roseanne taking pictures. There is so much love there.

  • My eyes watered when I heard this poem for the first time last month.

  • i can so relate to this scene

  • this scene is my favorite out of the whole series

how can you not love Darlene?

  • Mine too cause I was the tomboy growing up and I never forgot that scene.

  • loved this poem

  • Joss Whedon wrote this. It's one of my fave moments on the show.

  • i didnt know she was that deep

  • "Darlene's" character has always been "deep" she was as tough as nails but also had softer side. Which is what makes her so unique.

  • That poem is very sad. T.T

  • How great was Sarah Gilbert? AMAZING!

  • She was amazing on the show!!

  • She was AWESOME, what a great actress and so young. No one could touch her for dry wit/sarcasm she had those NAILED.

  • I know! Wished she'd won an Emmy. She was nominated twice (1993, 1994) for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Laurie Metcalf won those two years, so I can't really complain 'cause she was awesome as Jackie.

  • Too many people give her grief for career moves that her managers made her do, other people screw up and we adventually forgive them. But not Roseanne? If she were a size 2 and a coke head then all of the sudden everything is okay. What is wrong with the world?? Look at Amy Winehouse, what about her or look at Brittney Spears, I mean give me a freaking break that chick had all of use fooled since she was 18 and everyone is saying poor Britt we forgive her. WTF.

    Anyway.... Roseanne you rock!!!

  • That is a very good point.People are fucked up about Rosie O'Donnell just the same and both of these women are funny in their own way and tell it like it is.Its just that most Americans have their shit backwards and rather support skanky bimbos like Amy Winehouse,Lindsay Lohan,Britney Spears, and Paris Hiltion and look at how fucked up,lazy and dumb each and every one of those Skanks are.

  • I am American and please don't put me in the same boat with fashion whores and media addicts. I don't give a fucking shit about winehouse, spears, lohan, or hilton.

If you haven't heard, there are educated, thoughtful Americans; they just don't seek exposure.... check your stereotype

  • Honey thats not a stereotype its the truth, have you watched the news lately?Thats all they talk about and if its not that we are dealing with,we are still dealing with racism and homophobia which many Americans today still support, let alone we have a fucked up government and economy, unfortunately. You dont know unless you know someone who has or personally dealt with it.How do I know this?I am American myself, born and raised in New York,New York.Dont get pissy cuz Im speaking the truth

  • i agree! (but its Eventually...)

    thanks for the comment

  • LOL, I see your point but you're picking out the bottom of the barrel in Spears and Winehouse to compare her to.

  • LOL! True! :) But if you think about it, the bottom of the barrel, we're forgiving, but not Roseanne, who, I believe, is not the bottom of the barrel and yet the world treats her as if she is. But the other skanks they don't and should. :)

  • I know!!!! ROSEANNE TOTALLY ROCKS!!!!!!! I LOVE HER!!! SHE KICKS ASS AND DOESN'T PUT UP WITH SHIT.

  • Roseanne ROCKS

  • kinda...but still she prolly did it w/her boyfriend because of her insecurities and finding someone who liked her no matter probably made her feel good, and finally being accepted seemed too much of a dream for her to pass up =\ food for thought

  • I want the music when this scene ends after her poetry..too bad the author of this video cut it too soon..its a great tune

  • that's Canon in D, by Johann Pachelbel. very popular with a variety of recordings :)

  • i watched this a LONG time ago, and thought about this a times. i cant believe i found it again, randomly (i clicked a featured video on youtube homepage)...this is so sad and i think every teen has thoughts like this, but theyre really sad the way she verbalized them and how she doesnt fit in.

  • ha - i rememvber seeing this when i was young. i loved this show and knew exactly how darlene felt. this was a great episode.

  • HAHAHAHAHALOLOL! That's me playing the trombone during the credits!!! LOL! I was only 13 years old! HA! How random. I wasn't even looking for this, just randomly came across it. Aah, that's funny.

  • lol haha r u serious? Thats kool that you were on Roseanne.

  • what!! lol no way, really, whats your name?

  • Tommy Walker. I live in L.A. My orchestra teacher knew a casting director and they needed extras for the show. I got to miss 2 days of school and made $500. But hey, for a kid that's not bad! Ha, my .15 seconds of fame ... Also, watch for me on 'Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader' later this season! L.A. sucks, but it has its benefits!

  • You were a cutie!

  • that's so awesome:]

  • Thank you! Ihave been wanting to see this for a long time. This says a lot for a lot of girls.

  • I always loved how it starts off cute, and then suddenly takes this sad turn. This is why Roseanne was an amazing show.

  • fly away...lol

  • i liked the poem before darlene's...away, away, away

  • When I first saw this episode I cried.I mean the peom is deep.

  • every time i hear this i cry.. T-T

  • this made me cry

  • wow

    that poem was amazing

    i love darlene

  • Wow, I remember this episode but the age I saw this, I didn't understand the depth of these words until now.

  • i love this poem its perfect for her and she delivers it real well

  • I love that when Entertainment Weekly re-reviewed this show just a short while ago, they mentioned this episode. Great stuff.

  • Oh I just love this show! I remember watching this on TV when it aired :)
