Especially Nirvana has ties to punk. Dave Grohl is an alumnus of the Washington D.C. hardcore punkscene and later touring guitarist Pat Smear (of who Kurt was a fan) is one of the founders of "The Germs". Cobain listened to a lot of punk (as well as other genres) and hardly hid his influences or favourite musicians.

Thrashmetal as a genre is one of the hybrid-genres of punk and metal (besides a lot of "core"-suffix rockgenres).
