  • I would of been so scared and paranoid from it, now I will cringe each time the life goes up for anyone.

  • At 0:14 it sounds as if you can hear the machine trying to close and failing!

  • Wow...major respect to her for that. She could have not gone on but she did and did the best she could!

  • What did the announcement say?

  • What actually happened

  • does she say "no wait im stuck"?? well done her for carrying on... i would be shiting myself lol xx

  • I'm now going to be absolutely petrified whenever I see Wicked and it gets to Defying Gravity!! Good for her for carrying on - if that had happened to me (I'm scared of heights too) I would have been an absolute wreck and the standby probably would have had to finish the song :P

Btw did she sing the rest in or out of the lift?

  • she always held back but in this performance she really goes for it and totally drowns out the ensemble with her belt

  • unmatchable. goosebumps, everytime.

  • you can here that she was really scared in her voice when she was singen, but she is like really brave to do it again i would not of dane that :S

  • @SClub7and4Ever she never in this show, she just stayed on the ground

  • I saw Wicked in NYC in July and I had a "late lift" show. Teal Wicks was the Elphie and got in on cue but lift did not move forward. At "Everyone deserves..." the stage hands like creeped out to help and she finally began to rise at "To those..." & was up before "Tell them..." (WIERD!) Although she looked very confused & kept looking into the wings, she sang it perfectly + did all the riffs! It was funny b/c the 5-6 beams that face Elphie went on during the "ITS MEEE" as if she were going up.

  • that woman can sing even whit the accident simply amazing

  • what happened?

  • I'm sorry for spamming this video with stuff here, but WOW.. I'm so impressed by this actress.

  • wow... She's awesome!

  • Can I please say that half of the "anecdotes" written here are absolute BS.

Take it from someone who was there, ffs! Dianne didn't shout "Kerry!" she shouted "Elphie". The lift itself was much further back than it should have been, which is why she was late getting to it. She hit the lever accidentally with her arm while wrapping the cape over & when she gasps is when the two arms close on her stomach. She was clinging onto the arms as the lift began to rise, facing the wings.

  • @Jonnyriffic Oh my gosh! :o when you said "she was clinging onto the arms as the lift began to rise" do you mean when it was moving forward before it goes up, or actually going up?

  • @mbod92395 When she gasped, that's when the arms locked around her waist. It started to move forward and then move up, it didn't get very far in the air because the lift went slowly up for Kerry in her first run before Broadway (I read that she didn't like heights) which explains why she used to be at the highest point at "to those who ground me", normally Elphie's at the top at "as someone told me lately". The curtain quickly dropped, then she came back on and sang at the front of the stage :)

  • @Jonnyriffic ah cool. FINALLY after numerous speculations on what happened we hear what REALLY happened from someone who was THERE. thxs for chiming in & clearing up what happened

  • if u ever make a mistake infront of an audience, make it up to them and thats what she did well done

  • awww poor Kerry :( but it's almost like Elphie didn't expect herself to fly and this is what it wouldve been like if Elphaba was afraid of heights.

  • i love how it's silent for like 5 seconds.. so awkward holy fuck

  • Just pictutes?! Where is the video!

  • incredible-ness right there. How does she even do that when she's just been stuck in that thing. wow.

  • Some people are saying that she is unprofessional by not singing on, if i was about to get killed by falling out of a lift who the hell would keep singing???

  • OMG! She must have been so scared!

  • I LOVE her ... and the guy that shouts "YES!" as loud as he can when she starts again :P

  • And BTW someone shouts something at 0:37. Can't hear what they say.

  • @Lolo96x "They've stopped the lift" - it's someone backstage.

  • Some people laugh when she is dangling there. I would be terrified if I saw an actor hanging there shouting 'No, stop!' 'Help Me!' But she kicked ass after that :)

  • What happened?!

  • @Sophieetopia I think she wasn't safely locked in to the lift so she was falling out and calling for people to stop.

  • i oftren wonder what goes through the audience's mind during no-fly DG's since the lyrics really don't make sense if it doesn't happen

  • @jaszon28 ''Ladies and Gentlemen we thank you for your patience. I am pleased to inform you that this afternoon's performance is now able to commence''

  • This is actually one of the best performances of this song I've ever heard. After the little incident, that it.

This "look to the Western sky" is pure brilliance.

My only criticism is I wish she had of sang "it's me" instead of screaming it. But an amazing performance, especially considering what happened just before she sang.

  • can you imagine how scary that would be to be dangling 25 feet up in the air only by your costume?

  • She still delivered an AMAZING performance!!

  • what happened

  • lol this reminds me when i saw billy ellilot, the chair got stuck going down with billy's house and in the next scene in the boxing room the chair was still there and they started the scene but then the boxing instructor told the kids to stop and they went off until it was fixed. when it was they laughed about it and continued from the top of the scene x3

  • She's amazing.

  • Love the way she just let that last note have it!! She's a true professional: She didn't let the scare of the lift mess with her mind; but instead she used it to her advantage to give the best performance ever!!! Belt it out girl!! Love 1:24-1:27 too! *chills!*

  • That would be sooooo scary! But Kerry Ellis did really good after all of that!!!! Love Her!!!!!!!!!!!

  • to those who ground me? to those who cant fix a lift!

  • Can i Just say that Ellis here shows TRUE professionalism. She continues the performance and does it SPECTACULARLY!

  • Comment removed

  • why put things like this on the internet..?

  • Is it just me, or does the lift seem to be the biggest cause of problems for the musical? And 1:24-1:27? Holy crap, Kerry is one of my favorites!!

  • Let me run you through what actually happened. After she sings the bit with Glinda she is supposed to run over to the lift put her cape around the waist harness base thingy so the audience don't see. And just before she sings "it's me" she presses her back into the waist thingy were her back presses a button and she flys!

But what happened is that she elbowed the button while she was whipping her cape over and her cape got caught! Making go up ! Her whole body was dangling!

    In the next go she

  • you couldn't script something so cool... even the lift tried to stop her and Elphaba still defied gravity

  • It sounds almost as if she's making up for the delay. What a voice!

  • If the actor's life is in danger, fuck the show!

  • @onesongofglory The actor's (Elphaba) life is not in danger if the hit the button with their back. Because once it's closes in, it knows to go, if they are not safely locked in, they won't defy gravity. It thinks the actor is safe because it closes all the way. It doesn't know that there is no Elphaba inside.

  • @onesongofglory NO WAY!

  • @onesongofglory Especially someone as amazing as Kerry Ellis!!

  • It gives me chills every time I hear the pounding in the background and the screams from the actresses. I thought falling actors only happened in Spider Man: Turn Off The Dark. (Too soon?? Haha)

  • such a shame wqhen the platform doesn't work as it makes the whole "Everyone deserves the chance to fly" part less spectacular

  • Did she shout STOP! as in stop the lift? Because she was hanging on? :/

That takes guts to go back on that lift after that...

  • @xxHannahxxTobyxx yeah she was shouting stop and help me.

  • @xxHannahxxTobyxx She didn't go back on that very second. After she got down safely, she ran to the front and sang it there.

  • @carihigs she still went back on though... did i say it was straight away?!

  • @xxHannahxxTobyxx No, I just misinterpreted what you said. I wasn't trying to start any arguments.

  • If you listen carefully you can hear Kerry say "I'm so sorry" to the audience right before she starts singing again.

  • @xkaleidosaurusx She didn't say "I'm so sorry".

  • Got goosebumps from when she sang. Absoulutely amazing when she could finaly sing!!!

  • Having some idea of how the machine works, I actually can't imagine what happened to her. I'm glad she's alright though. Her performance on Defying Gravity this night is mind-blowing.

  • @FireGirlG can u explain how the lift works. PLEASE!

  • @zac613 There's a video on YouTube of an interview with Stephanie J. Block where she explains and shows how it works.

  • @zac613 The lift is a tiny platform that the actress stands on. Above this is a clamp that has black fabric attached to become the skirt of the dress when it closes around the waist of the actress. Inside the clamp is a sort of pressure plate that the actress leans against. The pressure on the plate snaps the clamp shut around her waist and then a signal is sent to the computer to raise the lift.

The clamp has a black skirt attached to it that forms the dress's skirt when the clamp is shut. Inside the clamp is a pressure plate that the actress leans against to close it around her waist. When this happens, the lift is raised on a boom arm. The machine that raises the boom is on the ground - she is raised from below, not from above.

  • wow that its meeeeeeeeeee was amazing i think she did it cuz she was pissed she wasnt flying that night

  • On the down side she almost fell out of the lift.. but on the upside she didnt and then came back to perform one of the best times she has ever sung the song! :)

  • Oh my god, that's scary. It's not even supposed to start if elphaba's not secured. Thinking about what could have happened....phew. I'm just glad no one was hurt...or worse.

  • TERRRIFYIIIIIIINGGGG!!!!

  • Just to set the record straight, she did not fall out. She wasn't safely clipped in and she thought the lift wouldn't rise, but it did and she shouted stop before it could get to a dangerous height. She was about 3 foot off the floor, probably not even that. So stop saying she fell from 20 ft. She didn't.

  • omg..... some of the background talking was in like chinese i think..... thats waaaaay to stereotypical..... lol

  • love the way she still belts it out at the end

  • LOL

  • So her broom hit a button and she wasnt in propperly? Where exactly was she hanging off?

  • scary

  • omg she is totally tied for my favorite elphaba!!!!!! :)

she sings with so much power even after that!!! truly amazing!!!!!!!!!

  • I love how she sings the song!!!!

  • This is unbelievable. Kerry is scared of heights and not only does she have the courage to actually go back on stage after that traumatic experience, but she returnsand finishes the song as well as she ever has done... i mean, did you hear that growl on the word "LOOK" in "look to the western sky"? absolutely amazing! Well done Kerry!

  • That sounds scary. Glad she was alright! She's a real trooper!

  • but doesn't the computer ha ve a censor that can tell if she's not locked in properly (or was that built into the system as a result of this?

  • but my god she makes up for it!!

  • Gheez you can hear the fear in her voice when she "scream, No , Stop it. STOP!" and the fear in Diannes when she screams "Kerry!". What happened was she not in the lift properly?

  • where does she scream?

  • WOW. This is very pathetic. If you listen this, you really feel pity. But, what happened exactly?

  • @chocopotX she came up to go its MEEEE and half way up to the top (where shes high up) it un clipped an she fell.

  • @SephiaWalkthroughs Wow.. that's.. scary. Hung she on the lift?

  • @chocopotX Acutally my bad the broom hit the button, and her body wasnt in the locking thing, and she was only holding on the the handle bar things about to fall about 20 ft up in the air.

  • @SephiaWalkthroughs don't be stupid, she didn't fall. it was like 3 foot in the air.

  • Someone shouts "KERRY" too, don't they? Oh my...

  • @MeganLovesMeryl yeah dianne does

  • @leelee987654 I thought so... Jeez, how terrifying!

  • @MeganLovesMeryl yes dianne saw that the broom hit the button and kerry was holding on by a thread and screamed KERRY!

  • @RosesNightengales Kerry Ellis basically tried to get in the lift for the big flying scene thingy for Defying Gravity, and nobody truely knows what happens but I'm guessing she slipped or something Idk, but that's why she screams, then after she's calmed down abit she's comes back out and sings it without the lift :)

  • What happened? O.o

  • Who screams what? I can't make it out :/ listened to it like 20 times but youtube videos on my phone aren't always very clear.

  • I admire her so much for this. To have that happen to you then come back out and sing like THAT really is outstanding. She's on my top 3 favourite Elphie's now! ^.^

  • Well done her for carrying on...

  • Sorry but I too really enjoy this... =/

    Love Kerry though =)

  • to sing like that afterwards wow! kerry is just amazing! xx

  • i'm guessing the extra long "AH" at the end was to makje up for not flying?

  • @disneydanny2 probably

  • What did the announcement say?

  • "I'm the one you want! SCREAM"

    "AHH KERRY!!!!"

    "STOP! STOP IT!"

AWW I feel bad for Kerry

  • It's only funny because she was okay. STOP IT! STOP!!

  • LOL

  • What I love is the orchestra that keeps playing for a a couple seconds after all dialogue is cut. I would love to get an instrumental version of this song - with the actual pit playing... not some cheesy homemade instrumental track. All of the homemade instrumental versions just aren't as good - they all definitely don't feature the timpani, that's for sure. The timpani seems to be such a big part in this song. If anyone knows where I could get such a track, let me know!

  • @jlepp06 Me too!! It sounds so good on this :)

  • Goosebumps everytime, its unfailing. she killllllllllllllllllllllllllllled it. I'd rather see her perform this version on the stage, rather than the normal on the lift....

  • Does anyone have a video of this ?

  • she is amazing to come back from that!

  • She was late getting into the lift - when she whipped the cape over the visible part of the lift - she hit the lever that closes the arms around the waist of the Elphaba and they closed, piercing her stomach - the computer off stage thought it was safe to fly and so she started going up half-hanging out the lift. curtain immediately came down.

  • @jakewgard96 omg what happened to Rachel!? Xx

  • This makes me cry every time.

  • Awesome recovery.

  • love the arkward silence when the curtian comes down half way through the song..

  • this wuz definitly THE BEST defying gravity EVER!!!!

  • POOR KERRY! i almost stopped breathing when she screamed and said-"STOP THE MUSIC!!!!!!! DO YOU HEAR ME?!?!

  • i have listened to this before but I just noticed, does she scream "fuck"?

  • Comment removed

  • OMG??? If something happened to her? What's gone wrong? If she fell out of the lift?

  • It sounds so scary!!! It sounds like she was about to freaking DIE!!!!!! D:

  • Dianne Pilkington definitely screams "Elphie", not "Kerry". You can hear the 'l' and 'ph' sounds really clearly.

  • from what i was told only one of the clamps attached to her so she lost her balance on the lift.

  • she really made up for that :D

  • does anyone have actualy video of this??

  • ive seen the show twice and it never went up late and i really want to see how they react to it if it does go up late.

  • BEST DEFYING GRAVITY EVER- - - after everything is fixed . . . i love her powerhouse voice

  • This happened again tonight and they had another show stop

  • @winfieldstudios

In England? Because I saw the matinee performance yesterday (27th April) and everything was fine. I'm guessing you saw the evening performance?

  • @TheLdeathnotefan Before she gets into the lift, her broom hits the button, signalling for the lift to rise, and she wasn't inside the lift, but her dress was, she started to be lifted from the floor by the back of her dress, then the curtain came down. She redid the performance without the lift (Don't blame her lol!) doing the song justice. Quite scary to watch knowing how high the lift goes to... O:!

  • @Kieranoe The broom does not control the lift... nor does she or any of the Elphaba's. The don't do anything that involves pressing a button to control the lift.

  • @Kieranoe I heard the lift is computerized and if she isn't in it doesn't go up. She doesn't control it.

  • @RuckalltheFules She doesn't control it. :3 There is a lever that she presses with her back which makes these 2 bars come around her, keeping her safe. He broomstick hit this lever, closing the 2 bars in which her dress got caught. So the computer off stage thought she was safely in it, but only her dress was. I heard this off a radio interview with Kerry. ^-^

  • @Kieranoe do you have a link to that interview??

  • Jeeeeeesus christ O.O I'd never get in that again, kudos to her for pulling it all back together!!

  • Comment removed

  • aww Dianne shouted KERRY! Bless her

  • @JBLoveSong She shouted Elphie, the L and PH are pretty obvious on top of the fact that if she was screaming for Kerry she wouldn't do it in an obnoxious character voice in place of her usual line.

  • @omglolwhatever Uhh okay... sorry. There was no need to be so rude about it.... it just sounded like she was generally concerned... I'll make an effort not to comment next time if people are going to feel the need to not reply politely.

  • whoa... scary stuff... to the people getting annoyed about the laughing, lots of people's natural reaction to shock is to laugh. believe me, i've been in situations where we're being told about something which is shocking, and people laugh- not because they're heartless, it's just their body's way of reacting (Science, god, whatever). my reaction is just to burst into tears- i'm such a wimp! someone could slam the door and i'd start crying... so let's just sit back and enjoy kerry's amazingness!

  • Where does Dianne yell "Kerrry" ?

  • @DefyingGravity767 When Kerry says 'I'm the one you want' She screams, and then you can here a faint 'KERRY', quite hard to hear though, I struggled at first!

  • omg, dianne's KERRI! is sooooooooooo scary! :o

  • She Never Fails to Come Back and BELT! She could of easiler asked them to put Ashleigh Gray On, But NO! She Behavs Like a true West End Star And Faces the Stage again ! <3 <3 Love her to bits

  • Makes me cringe every time i hear Dianne Pilkington shout 'KERRYY!' in this performance. But she completely owns the stage when she came back on.

I love Rachel and Louise, and think they're incredible,

    But I miss Kerry & Dianne! :( <3

  • @theLdeathnotefan she accidentally hit a lever tht closed the mechanism tighter around her stomach and therefore she couldnt breath and panicd:/

  • Holy crap, that last note!! annnd I would have freaked out! How wonderful of her to just get right back out there like nothing happened!

  • I think the silence after the orchestra stops is incredible!

  • is this broadway or london?

  • WOW!!!!! That would have been scary! I would not have just said "stop, stop" I would have screamed that I was stuck!

  • WHEN SHE YELLED FOR IT TO STOP DID THEY IMMEDIATLY GO TO BLACKOUT OR WHAT??

  • @WamsWarrior No they dropped the safety curtain

  • @omglolwhatever whats a safety curtain??

  • I feel like a psychopath saying this...but I seriously love listening to the horrified screams. IDK why.

  • holllyyy shiiiit

  • OMG, how can one person hold a note like that for FOURTEEN seconds!!!!!!!!

  • @MCRwriterwickedfreak If you think thats bad, listen to "For the First Time" from Tarzan. The last note is quite a bit longer :)

  • @iilluuvvmmll

No, She did it without the lift.

  • The moment of panic is so real... there's no acting there loll!

  • i heard that the lift started to go up when she wasnt ready and her foot slipped and she almost fell out and the Glinda started screaming for them to stop

  • Sweet Oz! That is one SHIZ of a performance she gives on her return! Good on her!

  • i am so happy she's okay...when she came back, did she try the part where she goes up in the lift or did she just remain on the ground?

  • @setsunaproductions she stayed on the ground.

  • @Cald0m92 aparently the arms closed on her waist not round her, so she was sort of half hanging out the lift.

It works in my head, that's the one I believe most I think, but I think because it was dark that no one could truely see what was happening. Only one person will ever know for sure xx

  • I wondered what happened in the evening performance this day

  • @Mythologydude not sure if thats true. People in the audience would't of known

  • I was there, I remember laughing because you couldn't see what was going on, it wa
