The canon was fired by interpreters of members of the 3rd brigade of the royal artillery with explosive and mid-victorian canon handeling training. The White Stripes were simply giving the signal to get it fired on the hour. Which took place at 12h00 as of every other day (besides christmas day, on which it is not fired) of the year according to british regulations on port signaling.
