that is a slow worm.(legless lizard). i used to keep them...but when he puts it on the ground ,it becomes a grass snake!

@Evasion72, thanks for uploading. Saw this movie for the first time when I was 10 or so, and it was my favorite until I saw "Apocalypse now" about 4 years later. A real gem.
