I usually just play and never bothered to sing. Your videos are now encouraging me to at least learn to sing the words as I play along with the banjo. I play Cumberland Gap and Cripple Creek pretty well now. After the Beverly Hillbillies song, I want to try Doin My Time by Flatt and Scruggs. I know the words to that song.
@Myra1959 Howdy, Myra! I'm glad I was able to encourage you to sing! I don't have the voice for it, but never mind that, anybody can sing and have fun, so yeah, you should go for it, girl! I have always wanted to sing Doing My Time, just about grew up listening to that song, but unfortunately I just know a very short version that is not enough for me to sing, otherwise, I sure would! I love that song, please, let me know when ya get it going! Keep on a-pickin', Myra! :)
@MSfeller I am getting there with the first verse on the Beverly Hillbillies song. It's funny how I grew up with show and the theme song for almost fifty years, but still get stomped when I try to sing along with the banjo.
@Myra1959 Oh, I'm glad to hear! Yeah, I hear ya, I grew up listening to Handsome Molly, and it was the first song I decided to try to sing along with while I picked, and it was very, very hard in the beginning! But once you get used to it, it goes smoothly and it's the same procedure for every song. You keep on a pickin', Myra, before you know, you'll be singing it. When I picked for some folks in England, and the Beverly Hillbillies was re-requested 3 times, everybody loves the tune and singing
@jc091393 Thanks! My advice to you is go out there and get a banjo right away, and get started! Best thing I ever did. Right now on eBay, there's a Washburn B9 for $149, very budget banjo, but it will get you started! Check with your local music store as well. Get a cheap one, then if it's your thing and it gets serious, get something a little more professional, with a tone ring for about $400 or so. Geoff Hohwald's book Banjo Primer and DVD Introduction to 5 string banjo are good to learn too.
You've got the perfect voice for that ole time mountain music, one that a lot of banjo players would love to have, nice pickin too! Check out some Clarence Ashley, great old mountain music.
@joshjonesify0 Thank you very much. I'm flattered that you and some other folk think I have a nice voice for mountain music! Sure, I will check Ashley out, thanks for the comment.
I have watched about all your videos and you are good on the banjo keep it up I am 16 and have learn afew my self . There are not alot of ppl that play the banjo so we got to keep it up and maybe some one else will try it and like it keep it up brother..check mind out at banjopicker16
@banjopicker16 Thank you very much. Yeah, in the beginning, I just about quit a couple of times, 'cause it was too doggone hard, but then I kept it up and persevered, and still do so. Yeah, definitely, keep it up on that banjo, because learning at that age, when you get to mine, ten years from now, you will sound amazing and 100 times better than me, man. Keep on pickin'! :)
@MSfeller yeah i got my banjo bout 3 years ago..but i just now started playin this year..i know about 4 tunes now....haha.. but im still workin on it...well we will cya buddy...
I plan on selling them in the future, and if I get to do so, it will be announced here. As of right now, I don't know anywhere, or anyone that sells it, that's actually why I decided to paint it myself.
Thank you, I appreciate your compliment, bud! About the Cripple Creek, funny that you mentioned, because I was trying to find the very same thing, but I found only instrumental versions as well, nobody sings along. I'll keep on alookin', if I find something, I will let you know.
I thank you kindly, locoman. Yeah, it's something that brings a little joy every now and then! Don't plan on being famous, just have fun with it is good enough... thanks.
Sounding better and better, don't feel bad about the voice, no good singing voice here either. You enjoy it and thats what matters the most. Happy Pickin', Mike.
Hey RiverBirch! Thanks for always stopping by. I need to check your videos too, darn it! Where are my manners here? =) Well, it was hard to sing and play at first, nearly impossible. I would mix everything up and it was just a mess. I kept on pushing, and now it's a lot easier, comes natural. Not a big problem nowadays, I think. You know what, I go to church often, I'm Southern Baptist. A year or two from now, when I get hot on this thing, I plan to sing and pick some gospel songs in church.
Sorry, my comments were not going through for the past two days. First of all, I'm impressed that all y'all liked my video! I hesitated before uploading it, because of my voice, personally I don't like it, at least not singing. But I'm glad I went right ahead and did it anyway! Thanks, God bless all y'all! Appreciate all the kindness... I am more motivated than ever right now! I will write messages to everyone that asked me something. Again, thank you very much for the motivation. =)
Your voice is just right, this is folk music; folk, as in the music of the people. This isn't any kind of snooty wine and cheese folderol, those people don't jam or enjoy life as a general rule anyway.
Have you ever heard an album called "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band"? It came out in the '70s, when I was a young man growing up in Georgia. Some of the greatest bluegrass pickers and singers on earth were invited to play on that record. The greatest collection of BG classics you can find, in my opinion. If you haven't got it you should find a copy. It's sure to give ya lots of great ideas. Peace and Southern Pride...CapnFlix, aka TMWKK
Oh yeah, I used to have that CD till some douche stole it from me. I have to buy that one back, I hear ya, it's without a doubt, one of the greatest Bluegrass albums ever! Thanks for reminding me, tomorrow is paycheck day (come to daddy!) and I'll be on eBay looking it up! Peace and Southern Pride, brother!
I hate American Idol. What your sound is... is pure Southern country. That is what this part of the country is about, our heritage, our sound. If you watch the really good movie "Songcatcher" it shows how our sound came straight from England and the hills of Scotland, with a twist in the voices. And this is a good one.
Beautiful, Mikey! Simply beautiful! Man, you sure have improved! You're damn good, baby boy! Keep playin' that beautifully re-painted banjah! It's beautiful! Can't believe you did that just by yourself! I thought you got a new banjo! Heeheehee!
He he he great work MSfeller. You chased my blues away with this video. I shall favour it. You are doing a great job. You are a true and talented banjoist, and an inspiration to us lesser players!

I have a tuner, as I had back then. However, experience and quality of the banjo are two important factors, plus them strings being old.
