So, I'm just going to assume that Pon is a guy and Zi is a girl :) And as for colours, I am going to say that usually the yellow one is Pon and the blue is Zi. Makes it easier XD
I don't know if the creator is homosexual, but he is an art student currently about 18 years.
He didn't give them genders, because he wanted "everyone to be able to relate to every comic, since he realised that recently, disregard to the traditional gender rules is commonplace."
He also stated that Pon is yellow and Zi is blue. They were both once grey with no names.
