Many kids have single parents of the other gender and the majority dont decide to just become and act like the gender of their parent. They are still a girl or boy which ever they are born and feel like. What this sounds liek to me is that he wated to dress as a girl and it wasnt a mothers mistake for letting him, he didnt cahnge his mind but he was FORCED to stay as a boy by SOCIETY for his own SAFTEY and thats just plain wrong!!

The thing is..I agree that u should direct ur child in the direction of being whatever gender they were born as. But that doesn't mean "you are boy so you need to play with trucks and in the dirt." Just make it known what their gender is. Their likes & even their sexuality have nothing to do with that. Im a strong supporter of the LGBT community. I just think that some of these ppl are putting thoughts in their kids heads bc they notice they like different things and assume it's a gender issue.

But, again, it's not about interests, it's not about liking pink. I was a tomboy-a tomboy who was biologically male. I had almost no interest in girl things, but I still knew I WAS a girl, as tomboys know that they are still girls and don't have a problem with that, even if their behaviors go against that. You're right that no two people have the same experience, I'm just telling you that there ARE people who legitimately are born with the internal wiring of one sex and the body of the other.

Dr. Phil's claim that 85 percent of transgendered children grow out of it is misleading at best. That statistic includes ALL children who show some kind of gender-variant behavior, not just transsexuals. If the child is truly a transsexual, they will not grow out of it, and it will only get worse for them if they do not address the problem.
@ColdColdToronto - I completely agree with this, if they really are transgender then they could possibly become suicidal because of the body to mind mix up. Trust me I've been suicidal for years because everyone tries pressuring me to be a girl and not the man that I am. That and I physically get sick if I'm around sperm and I think it may be because my body realizes that my brain says "no you shouldn't be able to get preagnant, this is wrong." @Thenewfallingsacred I experienced that, too. I'd say that if people experience what I went through and what it sounds like you've been through, there is NO chance whatsoever of "growing out of it". And what's really a shame is that the parents who saw this show that really need to know this-the parents of young children with this condition-got the message that it's likely that their child will grow out of it, which I find abhorrent.
@ColdColdToronto - I didn't like that message either, and the fact that this episode was titled as 'gender confusion' when in reality we know who and what we are but it's everyone else who is confused. Some kids grow out of it but trans people don't grow out of it, they start to realize more and more how being the wrong gender is hurting them. Psychologist Jerome Kagan, whom Glenn Stanton cites, is a dinosaur. He did a lot of good work on infant development and child temperament, but does not address the newest neurological research on kids and gender identity (because he is retired). This whole area is still a question mark scientifically, but for sure, religion as absolutely nothing to do with it. Religion masquerading as science makes me want to vomit.

My parents guided and directed me to be male, but I still ended up psychologically female, and was from the very beginning. In fact I would say it's more than likely that MOST parents of transgendered kids have, historically, tried to guide them to be content with their sex, but it doesn't work that way, from my experience, and from everything I've heard from trans people.

And whatever you may think of my parents or how I was raised (real nice of you to be judgmental about someone you've never met), I do not BELIEVE (no, I cannot prove it, but you can't prove your points either) that gender identity is a malleable part of a human being. My sons ages 2 and 5 are full out boys, but they would see me putting on makeup and nail polish and want to do the same. I fully believe in child transgenderism, some mimic their parents but a transgendered child knows.. My eldest has been taught about transgender people. He can't really grasp the idea that a boy sees himself or lives as a girl. His response is often "but he's a boy, why would he want to look and dress like a little girl". Kids know what they are & you have to support them.

@draco8692 I think this is a very complex issue and one which cannot be summed up so quickly - or even in a single book or by a single man's ideas. I am a huge supporter of freedom to be, but there is also a point where children need support in their decisions and not the impression that they've been left adrift with no direction at all. There is nothing wrong with a father telling his son, "let's go do man stuff!" or a mother the same with her daughter. Freedom doesn't mean being hands off.
@Maehedrose The problem is that the show leaves the uninformed with the impression that being transgendered is all about "doing man stuff" and vice versa, and it really isn't. At the end of the day, EVERYONE, whether they look at what is between their legs or what they're wearing or how long their hair is, knows what sex they are....imagine knowing in that same way, including your brain's map of your body, yet that knowing being contrary to what you actually have. That's what it's really about.

I dealt with gender issues much of my life and can vividly recall my father telling me how I was not allowed to like pink because only girls liked pink. @Maehedrose The difference is that most children have identities that MATCH their bodies, so they never give it a second thought, it never becomes a conflict, so gender identity is really something that most people are not even really aware of. But when there IS a conflict, believe me, you know.

LEARN to know what to look for. If your boy plays with dolls, you shouldn't assume they have any problems, but if they say things like "I want to cut my penis off" that is a sign that something else is wrong. Above all, love them unconditionally so they will feel comfortable coming to you if they have problems with this.

People aren't taught to be whatever gender they believe they are... we all get enough clues and cues to 'fit the norm', but the science shows it's much more comlex than that. We should always be skeptical of "scientific" advice from any Christian-based organization. They start with the assumption that the Bible is factual and work from there, ignoring any evidence that doesn't support that assumption. No one would choose to be homosexual or transgendered, but they have to ignore this obvious fact in order to make sense of reality whilst clinging to their faith.
The child is not mimicking anything! Some things are innate like basic concepts of self and gender. It has been proven by science many many times. It's like other animals have instincts to do stuff even though they have never seen others do it. That happens all the time in nature.

Okay, who did not want to be an some kind of animal when they're a little kid? That's part of being a young, imaginative child. And I'm sorry but when you're a child and you don't have society or any other influences telling you what's correct you know what you want more than you ever will as an adult. Listen to the children, they have nothing influencing how they feel.
It's not how the kids are 'driving' the situation, it's how the parents should see how it's important to go in that direction. There are doctors and lawyers and company CEOs I've known that are out there who are transsexual... ask THEM why they did it. It's not a childish concept. Parents don't have to allow a "non-reversable step" to happen until the child is much older.

Guiding into the gender they are born with? Gender is different than sex. Sex is biological male or female. Gender is determined by society... what society perceives to be feminine or masculine at the time. And this changes constantly. Heck, women didn't wear PANTS for how long because it was considered masculine.
I think we just need to stop classifying what's feminine and what's masculine. Because for example the whole blue for boys pink for girls thing is just stupid, as is other things.

do you think christians are the only ones with bias? I have observed that cultural influences and personal fears can powerfully influence non christian scientists. In many ways they have evolved a culture that simply chooses the position counter to christianity. You end up with both sides making logic secondary. You are afraid of condeming people and have an emotional aversion to bullying that you have seen in your life, so you automatically lean towards the "it's natural" stance.

I had a very difficult child/teenage experiance because my personality conflicted with what was expected of my gender.Does this make me a woman? no. a vagina would make me a woman. Successfully bringing up a child in a manner that would make that child think they are the opposite sex (at least to the degree that a real transsexual does) is impossible. No, I cannot say that her motives were entirely clean because I don't know this woman, but I know how difficult it would be to make a boy with an inborn male identity think he is female (and yes, transsexuals DO think they are the opposite sex, I'll tell you that as a fact I learned through personal experience).

Only when David was an adult did he speak out that the prominent "research" from 1972 to 1997 was wrong, because his was the case that allegedly proved the nurture theory.

The thing is..I agree that u should direct ur child in the direction of being whatever gender they were born as. But that doesn't mean "you are boy so you need to play with trucks and in the dirt." That statistic includes ALL children who show some kind of gender-variant behavior, not just transsexuals. Psychologist Jerome Kagan, whom Glenn Stanton cites, is a dinosaur. He did a lot of good work on infant development and child temperament, but does not address the newest neurological research on kids and gender identity (because he is retired). This whole area is still a question mark scientifically, but for sure, religion as absolutely nothing to do with it. Religion masquerading as science makes me want to vomit.

My parents guided and directed me to be male, but I still ended up psychologically female, and was from the very beginning. In fact I would say it's more than likely that MOST parents of transgendered kids have, historically, tried to guide them to be content with their sex, but it doesn't work that way, from my experience, and from everything I've heard from trans people.

My sons ages 2 and 5 are full out boys, but they would see me putting on makeup and nail polish and want to do the same. I fully believe in child transgenderism, some mimic their parents but a transgendered child knows.. My eldest has been taught about transgender people. this is the same as parents forcing a child to be right-handed, when the child is left-handed (a thing that often happened not so long ago). The child might write right-handed for the rest of his life, but still he will favour the left hand in his brain. You can't change the brain!

People aren't taught to be whatever gender they believe they are... we all get enough clues and cues to 'fit the norm', but the science shows it's much more comlex than that. When you're forced into a certain behaviour, you develop secondary mental health issues. You may have wanted to be a horse, but that didn't persist for years and years

We should always be skeptical of "scientific" advice from any Christian-based organization. They start with the assumption that the Bible is factual and work from there, ignoring any evidence that doesn't support that assumption. No one would choose to be homosexual or transgendered, but they have to ignore this obvious fact in order to make sense of reality whilst clinging to their faith.

The child is not mimicking anything! Some things are innate like basic concepts of self and gender. It has been proven by science many many times. It's like other animals have instincts to do stuff even though they have never seen others do it. That happens all the time in nature.

Every time I think about having a guy's body I'm gonna puke. I'm SO happy I'm a girl but I don't think it means that I'm "right" or anything. I like people who are girls and want to be boys and I'm not the one to tell others what to do just because I feel like a girl. I bet they feel like a boy just as strongly.

Gender is a spectrum and people are born like this. Many people think they are not 100% boy or a girl. No amount of female toys makes a "normal" boy a transsexual because his brain thinks he's a boy. Claiming that is just stupid. It's all biological and happens in your brain. Everyone in Europe knows this. It seems America falls a little bit behind because of all the christians there. I have dated transsexuals and trust me, they all liked girls ;) So it's not true they're gonna end up gay

Also, that's what hormone blockers and HRT (hormone replacement therapy) is for. To block Male puberty and put her through femal puberty. It's not how the kids are 'driving' the situation, it's how the parents should see how it's important to go in that direction. There are doctors and lawyers and company CEOs I've known that are out there who are transsexual... ask THEM why they did it. It's not a childish concept. Parents don't have to allow a "non-reversable step" to happen until the child is much older.

I love how those who have no idea the internal struggles these kids go through like to undermine them. Does anyone honestly think this is something people choose?? Who would choose this life if they could help it?? No one can tell you how you feel inside. It's like living a cruel joke to feel your one thing but physically your something else. And then to have to try and explain it to family, friends etc. Put yourself in their shoes and think how you'd feel if this was your life.

What I don't understand is... You force a child to be the way typically they MUST be because they were born the sex you see. How can that be good for the child's development if they end up depressed and lose the interest in life because they can't play with the things they want to play. To force them to wear boy clothes cause they were born boy, makes them feel miserable and they end up not caring about life anymore. "If I can't be the way I feel, then what's the point?"

The word "disorder" and "confused" makes it sound like such a bad thing, and it's not! It's real and parents need to nurture and most importantly listen to their children, even at the age of 3. Adults don't give children enough credit, when it comes to life. They know more than you think!

Guiding into the gender they are born with? Gender is different than sex. Sex is biological male or female. Gender is determined by society... what society perceives to be feminine or masculine at the time. And this changes constantly. Heck, women didn't wear PANTS for how long because it was considered masculine.
I think we just need to stop classifying what's feminine and what's masculine. Because for example the whole blue for boys pink for girls thing is just stupid, as is other things.

Besides there're many scientists who have spend just as much time and disagree with his findings. In fact all major psychological and medical associations disagree with the findings of Statton.
The fact that his origination uses pseudo-scientific terms like 'gay lifestyle' proves their research

do you think christians are the only ones with bias? I have observed that cultural influences and personal fears can powerfully influence non christian scientists. In many ways they have evolved a culture that simply chooses the position counter to christianity. You end up with both sides making logic secondary. You are afraid of condeming people and have an emotional aversion to bullying that you have seen in your life, so you automatically lean towards the "it's natural" stance.

I had a very difficult child/teenage experiance because my personality conflicted with what was expected of my gender.Does this make me a woman? no. a vagina would make me a woman. All it meant was that I was gentle and nurturing and uncombative. The idea that this is feminine is what's unnatural. Unless you want to go through pregnancy you don't want to be a woman. Successfully bringing up a child in a manner that would make that child think they are the opposite sex (at least to the degree that a real transsexual does) is impossible. And I'm disappointed that Dr. Phil didn't know this.

@johmedis It's impossible because a child's gender identity is inborn, decided by what hormones bathed the brain in the womb, not how their mother decides to raise him or her. No, I cannot say that her motives were entirely clean because I don't know this woman, but I know how difficult it would be to make a boy with an inborn male identity think he is female (and yes, transsexuals DO think they are the opposite sex, I'll tell you that as a fact I learned through personal experience).

@ColdColdToronto Also in saying that that is impossible, that you can't force a chosen gender onto a child, then scientific research about both infant boys and girls pretty much remaining without any distinguishing thing that would make them a particular gender other than genitalia is wrong.
Plus, the mother seems to go between two extremes. Refusing to let the child wear girl's clothes sternly or praising her for doing the same thing.

@johmedis Have you heard about David Reimer? He was castrated and raised by his parents as a girl, even though he fought it. In fact, he went back to being male as a teenager. Dr. John Money-a researcher in favor of the nurture theory-lied to the press and the medical world, telling them the case was a success. Only when David was an adult did he speak out that the prominent "research" from 1972 to 1997 was wrong, because his was the case that allegedly proved the nurture theory.

Anyway, as I've said elsewhere the reason it is becoming public knowledge now is because medical science can treat it now. Before that, a very, very large percentage of trans people committed suicide very, very young. Many still do, if they don't have families that support them or can't afford medical treatment.
