The first time I heard this song a Canadian dj dedicated it to the beleaguered citizens of The United States in 1978.33 years later we have become our own worst enemies.
@abcv105 How could they be too patriotic and supportive of the USA? The Kinks were British. This song is more like a request from USA to cousin Britain to help them out just like they did the British during two world wars.
I like that song espeicaly being played on 4th July. As for the youtube version of It's shows America can bounce back from it's lowest point and shows there are alot of American heroes out there
This song came out in the late 70's /early 80's when America appeared to be in decline after Vietnam, Watergate, Soviet expansion and ascendancy, stagflation, oil crisis, Big 3 auto company problems, and so on. We bounced back from that low, but it looks like this time the risk of becoming a has-been power is even higher.
Hey Grandadmiral2 Why don't you consider polishing this awesome vid and distributing it worldwide for utube comment? Perhaps additional focus on the USA's historical support of other nations and people would bring out a little feedback that the USA does have alot more friends and admirers in the world today than the popular media and some politicians would like you to think.
the Kinks are all about the everyday working mans trials and tribulations (besides they put on great shows and everybody sings and that makes thier concerts fun the Stones who knows you could end up dead at thier concert lol) and real life as far as sounding like Jumping Jack NOT AT ALL ! besides who stole from who ? the Stones write about life but the Kinks live/lived it just like thier fans the Stones live in a WHOLE different world and have no clue what thier fans lives are like !
Oh yeah, The Stones couldn't care less about their fans and the Kinks keep track of all their fans.
/sarcasm
How can you say anything about what those bands think about their fans? The only thing sais is that the music is a ripp-off from Jumping Jack Flash. And it's true, that riff is excactly the same. Little chance it is a coïncident, as they probably knew the Stones-song.
They also did this clearly with Hello I love you (the Doors) but named it The Destroyer.
Actually, the riff on "Destroyer" is from "All Day & All of the Night", which the Doors later used. You miss the joke: back in the day EVERYBODY stole from the KinKs, this is a little pay back. Check out their blatant use of the "My Generation" ending on "U.K. Jive" . Again. it's part of joke.
Yeah, I'm sorry about the Doors part, just after that post I heard All Day & All of the Night when I started listening more of The Kinks, as it still is a good band :)
I thought there was another song where they stole the riff, but I'm not sure atm which song that was and don't feel like looking for it (they have so many songs, too much work).
I'm sorry about that last sentence, I heard All day & all of the night after that post for the first time when I started listening to more of The Kinks, as it is a good band anyhow :)
Also, I don't know what I meant with that typo, sais, probably meant said, but I'm not sure.
This song is not a ripoff of "Jumping blah blah.." by the Stones. The one power riff is similar in structure, but not the same note sequence. In any case, This is a much more interesting song in my opinion with about
4or5 different parts which makes the song
alot more cerebral than the Stones' ode to debauchery.....
@steelyglenn Exact same pitch sequence actually, with the first note starting in the lower octave instead. Agree on it having much more variety, though both songs are very good.
Fantastic, I've been hoping this would be posted!Great song and very timely again.....I recall when this originally came out it was also an economically difficult time. I believe the song was criticized by the PC nazis as being too patriotic and supportive of the USA and its historic role as savior of the free world.

subtext of video is oversimplified jingoism but nice pictures. Good job but i disagree with the sentiment.

This song is basically just Jumpin' Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones. The Kinks have written much, much better stuff than this Stones' rip-off.

What? I'm a Stones fan too, but let's be honest, a lot of their stuff really isn't that original.
