Where did you see this? I just played in the pit orchestra for the very same South Pacific show with Carmen Cusack in Appleton, WI. You probably saw her right before I played the show. She is a very talented singer.

I don't think its weird at all. I think it's got to do with their vocal range. I know Kerry Ellis and Amanda Harrison have both played Ellen in Miss Saigon and Elphaba in Wicked.

Out of all the Fantines I have seen live over the years (Kerry Ellis, Joanna Ampil, Sophia Regavelas, Natasha Seale (u/s), and two other's I can't remember the names of) Carmen Cusack was the best by a mile.

For me, she is the definitive Fantine :) 5 stars.
