Provocation does not mean Japan had to attack the USA. Japan chose war because they wanted to fight. Actually 'Death before surrender', as you put it, is quite a recent thing in Japanese philosophy. It was depeloped just after 1st world war, when Japan was believing itself to be unbeatable. Surrender meant shame and Japanese soldiers were taught to be strong.
And as far as the treatment of POWs went way to far. If you look into the role Japn played during the 1st world war, you will see that Japan trated German POWs, from Qingdao, China with grace and kindness.

@estw Germany got much worse and would have been better off to have only suffered the 2 bombs. Over 1.5 million tons of TNT equivalent of TNT was dropped on Germany, about 25Kilo tons of TNT dropped in the two bombs (one was 10kt the other around 15kt). Not to mention most of the people who died in Japan were vaporized instantly, while Germans suffocated or were burned to death.

Japanese government should be more cautious in its actions in a more similar way to Naoto Kan and act less like Koizumi. But other countries should also understand and try to forget since there were also japanese innocent victims in WW2.
I believe that the old injuries and present hatred in the past are a common way used by leaders to control internal crisis, in Japan, Korea, China, etc.

One thing a lot of people don't know about the Japanese is that they actually built a war memorial for their soldiers. Parts of Asia find this disgusting and believe it should be torn down. It would be equivalent to Germany building a Nazi Memorial for their fallen soldiers.

They were even doing this BEFORE the eruption of WW2. That's why parts of asia want to tear down their memorial. Otherwise it would be like Germany making a memorial for their fallen.

that's not totally true, I agree that the Japanese aren't bad people and were never solely to blame but they were pretty horrific to the Chinese and were very militaristic. Thise combined with their long held tradition of death before surrender made for some very nasty treatment of captured civillians and POW's. The Japanese had held this belief and these views long before the nazis came into existence. Don't get me wrong, I'm not rascist but the atrocities commited by the Japanese were horrible

Actually 'Death before surrender', as you put it, is quite a recent thing in Japanese philosophy. It was depeloped just after 1st world war, when Japan was believing itself to be unbeatable. Surrender meant shame and Japanese soldiers were taught to be strong.
And as far as the treatment of POWs went way to far. If you look into the role Japn played during the 1st world war, you will see that Japan trated German POWs, from Qingdao, China with grace and kindness.
