Can you believe iTunes still doesn't have this movie?!! And Newman won the Academy Award for his role... although I still think it's a weak sequel to how great "The Hustler" is.
@dokokai the hustler is WWWAAAAYYYYYY better man, altho i like this as some popcorn fluff, but watch the hustler,it is actually pretty deep about the complexity of winning v losing
@Gos1234567 I'm not trying to be a dick, but I don't think you read my comment clearly. I said this is "a weak sequel compared to how great The Hustler is". Which means I have already seen The Hustler... many times & I think its a masterpiece movie. Unfortunately this is all we have for a sequel, as poor as it is. I'm just saying than iTunes doesn't have the only movie Newman won an Oscar for.
This was the film that brought Forrest Whitaker to my attention. And fortunately for him, he was given the best line in the movie. He held his own with Newman too. Nice work.
I've been around the pool scene since this movie came out, and trust me, Amos' final question had nothing to do with handicapping.. It was the needle, pure and simple..
@DelBluenose80 no he actually loses the game... afterwards he relizes that his eyesight wasnt great and so he gets glasses afterward and swims to get back in shapes and practices to get his game back
@dadsbabypu Cruise was perfect palying Vince. I can'r imagine anyone else better playing the role of a cocky young pool player. Maybe Sean Penn, but Cruise was just fine in my book.
Funny, the movie Kingpin is basically the Hustler (Woody Harrelson/Newman gets his hand ruined) plus The Color of Money (Woody teaches Quaid the ropes), except for bowling.
the thing about The Hustler and The Color of Money is that The Hustler is more about Hustling, while The Color of Money is about teaching how to hustle. both are great films, but in my opinion The Hustler is better because Tom Cruise absolutely RUINS the movie, why? because his over dramatic acting swinging the cue stick and all that karate bs is way over the top. no way would any pool player or hustler do that in real life. just goes to show how bad of an actor he can be.
This scene sucks, why can't paul kick his ass? I guess i need to see the movie.. but tom cruise is in it! fuck that shit.. I saw the hustler and it was brilliant..My guess is this isn't..Am i wrong?
@fvlak1 This movie is good and Cruise plays the kid with the big ego just right. It's still about Newman and his path to the type of life he always wanted but had taken away from. I rank it 8 out 10, IMHO.
The ending is a little short but I'm not sure how they could have ended it better.
Great scene, well played by both actors. Forrest acting opposite a legend like the late great Paul Newman, must have been an honour for him. Eddy got played by Amos!
@metairie33 That would be interesting one, my money's on Eddie though, like to see him teach Vincent lesson, he was bit too cocky at times and thought he was gonna beat everyone.
at 0:14, the black guy is shooting the yellow 1 ball. the green 6 and yellow-striped 9 are already positioned for the combination side pocket shot. no offense meant, just pointed out some lapses on this movie.
Forest didn't steal this scene from Paul Newman because what made this scene was the fact that some hustler was actually beating the great mentor Newman, so both characters were needed
"Do you think I need to lose some weight?" is Amos saying: "I gave you a chance to forget the fact that I hustled you and you decided to take it personally. Are you sure you don't want to insult the way I look, too?"
Either that, or he's answering the question "are you a hustler?", a question to which the answer is an obvious YES, with another question to which the obvious answer is YES (though, I'm sure whoever wrote the script might have envisioned a fatter guy than Whitaker).
you obvious didn't seen the film. If you did have, you know this film is exactly a OVER THE TOP-stylized film about pool. Just like Raging Bull was about boxing. And you're asking for "realism"? Come on!
I think the weight comment is just Whitaker keeping in character (being a "subject" and all). Even though Newman now knows he is good, Whitaker still wants to project (maybe he actually is) being a sort of mental patient. That's his persona. I've never heard weight used that way relating to pool before. He might say, I will GIVE weight or I NEED TO HAVE weight but I've never heard anyone say I should lose weight. It does not make sense as it relates to giving or getting a spot.
I wanted to ask Howard Vickery about that scene. He was in the movie and he hangs out at Sportsmans in Columbus Ohio. I haven't seen him for some time though.
The "weight" comment was the actual end of the act. His "Do you think I need to lose some weight?" was him asking Eddie if he thinks Amos might actually need to give up some "weight" in order for Eddie to have a chance of winning.
Amos is answering the question Eddie asked earlier in the scene. "You a hustler Amos?", his question at the end "You think I need to lose some weight?" was basically Amos's way of letting Eddie know that he is in fact a hustler and Eddie would need weight to win.
intentional double entendre...he's asking Eddie "should i play on the lemon a bit more, e.g. not show so much speed." additionally, he's busting eddie's chops saying i may look a bit sloppy but i'm smooth huh.
@DetroitFootballLions I have played the game competitively for the past 20 years and dealt with all the ins and outs of this game and all the characters that are in it for all that time.
@Stiletos Maybe. It could also simply be him screwing with Newman's character. Trying to get a rise out of him. Or, the other complex answer: Amos's "weight" he's talking about is his macho swagger during play. Maybe if he'd lightened up his act, he wouldn't have been discovered as a hustler.
@Stiletos After thinking about it, I think the "weight" comment meant that he was answering Eddie's question "Are you a hustler?" by rubbing it in that he uses his "fat body" as the hustle, that people see some slob and underestimate him, and doubt he's going to be a good pool player.
weight: As in, "You're a champion. To play you, I need some weight". Basically, a mutually agreed upon modification to the game so that players of disparate skill levels can compete against each other in a meaningful way. For example, if you are playing someone much worse than you at nineball, you can make it so that if they make the eight-ball, they win. One can either 'give weight' or 'get weight'.
@Stiletos After reading the definition, your theory is logical. However, the pool slang "weight" is not common knowledge and was never explained in the film. Wish it was, then the audience would be able to appreciate the moment.
Do you think his fat body was part of his "hustle"?
@A550RGY He did not get fat in order to hustle, being fat was a far less crucial part of the hustle when compared to his attitude, his ability to make Eddie actually believe for a short while that he actually had some mentally unstable, univsersity "subject", sucker on the line. It was certainly part of the total package and character that he acted though. It lulled Eddie into a false sense of security and made him let his guard down and he paid for it.
@Stiletos naw the hustler thing was verified earlier, eddie asked him are you a hustler, forrest didnt answer properly, said something like "lets just play" ,then it was taken for granted than forest was a hustler, the weight thing was just an insult to eddie
@Gos1234567 Thats actually not how the conversation went down at all. When he says "Hey let's just play" was after the "double or nothing" "double or nothing" mimmick moment WAY before Eddie knew what he was getting himself into. When Eddie asks Amos if he is a hustler he responds "that's just luck", he asks him again and Amos responds "what, you wanna quit?" Amos never admitted outright he was a hustler until the "weight" like, although he knew Eddie was fully aware well before then.
what does forest whitaker say when he says (after the crazy 6-9 combo shot down table where he laughs and calls it luck and fast eddie gets pissed) he says something along the lines of "when a guy loses he......" he what? does he say "when a guy loses, he should pay.'???
paul newman should have made this film on his own cruise nearly ruined it with his poncing about smirking and showing off can't act to save his life he is just a pretty face
cuts straight through the heart as in indirectly answers a previous question with a question of his own.."do you think I need to lose some weight" Mind blowing!
cool stuff. i hope newman gets better soon. check out "what inspires omar?" a video from Intel's Inspired by Education campaign that I'm working on. He's Forrest Whitaker's nephew, and has an inspiring story about what got him into the movie business - his teacher.
Dude, "weight" isn't some obscure pool term. He's letting Newman know he's a hustler by asking if he should lose weight to look more normal (ie less obvious a guy thats trying to convince people he's a nobody).
I think maybe the weight question could possibly be because of the earlier hustler question, but I think it's more along the lines of "You just got your ass beat by an overweight guy", lol.
whittaker is one of the best. I've always been a fan but I have to see he was over hyped in the Shield. They made it out like he'd be giving Mackey a real game but the whole story just fizzled...
I'm not sure, but I think Whitaker asked that question to answer an earlier one from Newman. Newman asked if he was a hustler and Whitaker wouldn't answer. After hustling Newman, Whitaker asks an obvious question about his weight to which the answer is clearly "yes." By doing this, he indirectly answered "yes" to Newman's question about him being a hustler. Just my opinion, but the only one that makes sense to me.
Weight in pool refers to a handicap. For example: a superior player may give a lesser player odds of 7 games to 4. Of course, if a hustler can get weight from his mark, his chances of winning are all the better.
Funny you wrote that. I've been thinking the same thing about this scene all these years since I saw the movie in its theatrical release. Of course the weight as a handicap comment is true but not for this scene. Felson never spotted Amos any weight or vice versa. It's an answer to the hustler question.
Forest just CRUSHED a veteran pool player. We know that newman is STUNNED at what just happened and it hurt his pride and made him question himself as a player.
The premise is that forest is SO good at what he does he NEVER worrried about losing. The only thing that comes out of his mouth after it's all over is,"do you think i should lose some weight"?
While Newman was worried about the fact that he was losing and getting hustled, Forest was simply worrying about his weight.
He's not talking about his body, hypr0040. He's talking about the games they played.
It's unclear if Eddie was actually giving Amos weight as they played. Whether he did or not is irrelevant, though, 'cause we all know he had already discounted Amos the moment he saw him. The line is Amos' way of saying "You didn't give me enough credit, old man."
The moment where Eddie keeps asking Amos if he's a hustler, and Amos finally asks "What? wanna quit?" is so brutal; essentially, he's saying "Of course I'm a hustler, but so what, you're on the hook and you can't quit." It would have saved time if Eddie had just given him the money.
This scene really impressed me, like the guy said, "even WITH the errors". Made me take notice of Whitaker's incredible ability. Can't wait to see him as the "King of Scotland". He's awesome.
once i did a shot like paul newman there :P hey do you have anymore scenes of this movie if you do could you post them? i havent seen this movie in years
Arguably the best scene from the movie, despite errors. As the camera pans from Cruise and Mastrantonio walking up the steps over to Newman and Whitaker at the table, you see a white cue ball way over to the side. Whitaker is hitting and pocketing the 1 ball. The cue ball appears to be in place for a kick shot into a 6-9 combination that Newman makes, but the 3 ball is still on the table! Lots of others peppered throughout the film, which makes it fun to dissect.
Can you believe iTunes still doesn't have this movie?!! And Newman won the Academy Award for his role... although I still think it's a weak sequel to how great "The Hustler" is.

"You think I need to lose some weight?"
That gets me smiling every time. Ain't that funny in real life, though.

i have never really gotten that line..

Now that line makes sense. Thanks , Hoosier!

Nice work.

Here's a relatively unknown Forest Whitaker film: Smoke (1995). Another great film.
