Its funny people who say farm animals are better off than whales. Farming is basically genetic manipulation of wild animals over centuries so they become totally dependent on human intervention. most whales are migratory species, hence these whales are not resources belonging to any one country, rather they belong to the world. the japanese argument has always been that whaling is a cultural practice, and that people should tolerate whaling because of that. Nice try with the PR spin, but your facts are wrong. Humpback Sei, Fin, and Brydes whales are all listed as endangered, and japan hunts them all. The Minke whales are thought to have declined by over 60% in the past ten years, and once verified, they will also be listed as endangered.
You try to equate the killing of whales as being the same as killing cows or chickens, and yet where is the global protest against killing cows? Most whales take 20-30 mins to die, do you think that's humane?

There is easily as much "propaganda" in this video as the video itself protests against. It's obviously misleading to say that only "Russia and America" are hunting endangered whales. These whales are taken by small indigenous populations - using traditional tools - not modern commercial vessels!
None the less - the Japanese lady who speaks in this film is absolutely right. This is not an issue which should be decided on the basis of emotion. Perhaps Hg poisoning is reason enough though...

first off, fuck the asshole who made this video. now, even if there are many whale species that aren't endangered yet does not mean we have to reduce their population to the point of extinction. the river dolphins of Yantze never had any substantial population; also adding to their demise is that their fresh water ecology is much more unstable and much more suceptible to any changes in their enviroment, you simply can not compare the yantze to the pacific ocean.

most whales are migratory species, hence these whales are not resources belonging to any one country, rather they belong to the world. the japanese argument has always been that whaling is a cultural practice, and that people should tolerate whaling because of that. But killing whales also hinders on other countries preferences, hence why should every other country who oppose whaling yield to the objective view of one or two countries.

This issue is not political, it is cultural and moral. the choosing of which animal to kill and which to keep as pets varies in different cultures. In my opinion, culture is not a valid excuse to kill animals. And since humans thrive on plant based diets, killing them to eat them in the developed countries of our day and age is also unacceptable.

Whale isn't a species, whale is a genus of which there are 83 species. Japan only hunts a single species, and that is Minke whale, these are also the most common of the genus with over 800,000 estimated to be alive. How is it different to any other abundant animal then? Why can't they eat it like we eat pork or beef?

If whales are instinct, Japan would be the first one to be in trouble by that.
Of course the traditional fishermen and researchers know better than that.
Japanese do not eat whale meat as much as they did in the ancient years any more,
almost not at all in general today,
except occasionally seen in a few local restaurants in seaside areas.
If someone is eating human meat, I will call them barbarians, but the whaling fishermen know how to appreciate what they hunt n I don't think they are.

Using emotionally the word "massacre" is extremely wrong.
The Japanese fishermen who must continue to live with the whales are the last people to wish the extinction of whales.
The number of hunting whales is only 0.06% of the whole and they strictly follow the international law.
There is even a scientific report that clearly shows an increasing number of the whales by 30k annually.
This is all thanks to the Japanese hunters who strictly follow the international law.

If whales are "majestic creatures" in your eyes, then please give me a reason why cows are not "majestic creatures" as well. Actually they must be so for Indians.
In different places different animals are eaten.
Even in different regions in Japan different things are eaten.
There happens to be a few seaside regions where people still hunt whales respectfully in their continued culture and gratefully have it in their food-culture.

I think you should really ask yourself carefully what is such a big difference between eating cows, deers, rabbits, pigs, chicken, (if u r australian, kangaroos, too) and the occasional hunting of whales by those traditional fishermen to maintain their sacred whaling culture?
The biggest difference for you is whether or not and how much you are used to those traditions, isn't it?

For me as a Japanese, nothing is more cruel to watch europeans eat rabbits' meat like it is delicious in christmas. For me, it's seriously a yuck experience!
I also personally feel the same way about dogs and cats eaten in Korea, or frogs, insects, snails in china, too.
But I don't accuse them calling them barbarians because I'm not a hypocrite and I don't wanna be one.
In different cultures different things are eaten.
I hope you know and understand that.
