Baseball and America are a a perfect match... except baseball was invented in CANADA. Have fun you poor posers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We even take basketball.
@syrenski Check your history, an American named Abner Doubleday invented baseball in Cooperstown, NY. It was popularized by soldiers during the Civil War who brought the game back home with them once the war was over. America has 29 baseball teams, Canada has 1, I'd say we we're the better match.
Also, it's true a Canadian invented basketball but he did so while living in Massachusetts and looking for a sports game that could be played indoors to escape the New England winters.
When is this series coming out on DVD? I would love all the games plus the pre and post game. This was my last great sports moment as a Minnesota fan.
@notoriousgod71 Check the websites sell.com and ioffer.com. They both have some people who sell personal copies of this and other series. That's probably your best bet for getting these games with pre and post game shows (which indeed, were some of the best parts of these telecasts). They've released box sets of a bunch of World Series, but these DVD's generally don't include pre-game shows, so those two sites are probably the best way to get these.
As a Detroit Tigers fan, I was tickled pink that they used Ernie Harwell to do the opening narration. This was the year when Ernie had finished what we all thought would be his last season of play-by-play in Detroit, after the Tigers refused to renew his contract.
CBS took a lot of criticism at the time for its coverage, but in hindsight they didn't do a bad job at all. Great music, nice graphics, a tolerable McCarver, and the great Jack Buck. Certainly better than what Fox gives us now.
@mdumas43073 You're right, when it came to actually covering the games CBS did it well, they were just too inconsistant when it came to showing games in the regular season. FOX at least shows games every Saturday afternoon just like ABC and NBC did for all those years, CBS was the only ones not to do that.
Interestingly, in the years that followed, while the Braves would make the playoffs 14 consecutive years, the Twins would not return to the playoffs for 12 years.
Greatest World Series ever. 3 of 7 games go extra innings. 4 of 7 games decided in walk-off fashion. 5 of 7 games decided by 1 run. Doesn't get any better.
@MNsportsnut this series was TENSE! I was in 5th grade when it happened and this series was just a pure display of baseball from both teams... I wish MLB was still executed this way!
The only series since then that even comes close to the excitement of 1991 was the post-9/11 series between the Yankees and D'Backs. But I still think this one was better.
Old time baseball fans might argue for the '75 World Series rivaling this one, and at least as the Game 6's go they might have a point. But I'd still say this one comes out on top because of Game 7.
@dennydog10 As someone who lives in Phoenix and rooted like mad for the Diamondbacks, I have to agree with you -- from purely a baseball fan's standpoint, this was the greatest World Series ever played.
@LiveInTheAtl No one could introduce post season baseball like this. Show this to ANYONE with no exposure to baseball, and you can make them love it just by showing them this opening montage.
funny to think "SUPER VISION" is probably collecting dust in some back room somewhere. wonder how much it cost back then?

I like the old World Series trophy better, the recent ones looked cheap compared to that.

@iamhungey12345 I totally agree...the new World Series Trophy is a shell of it's old self.

Perfect for CBS' coverage of this series!!!

@norr4636: And even that one has an asterisk by it since it was a strike-shortened year.

jupitercrash07 1 year ago
Ironically, following their great series, the Twins wouldn't return to the playoffs again until 2002, whie the Braves made it every year until 2006.
