Good point Mayor.. There appears to be a total dumbing down going on,, It' s insidious,, Your looks and your shape are the only currency you have,,,?? Where has this crap come from??? The Guardian.. decent paper in UK did a survey a few years ago where they asked teenage girls about their aspirations and ambitions... The top job choices were "lap dancer", , "glamour model", "reality TV star" and "footballer's wife" .... Scary
i loved this movie!!!! we watched it in social studies. i really wish that alice paul and ben weissman could've gotten together... they were such a cute couple... and he really loved her... and i think she loved him too, but didn't do anything about it since she believed being a suffragist was more important...
Why is it women of today think they are superior to women of the past because they can earn money and vote? Today money and therefore power can be had without doing physical labour. Do you think 1000 years ago the women had that option where jobs were chopping wood with a crude axe, ploughing fields without tractors, building houses by hand out of stones and power was taken by whoever could wield a sword the best?
Does anyone know where I can find a video or an MP3 of this song WITHOUT all the background noise of yelling and force feeding?? I tried recording it and then editing it, but that didn't work. I need this version of the song for something, without background noise!!! Please help. Thanks!
@christiangal723 Dr Bernice Williams does the original Gospel version, Well one of the earliest recorded versions,, The Iris De Ment version is nice tho.... tony
Ah!! we watched this movie in American History Class!! I loved it!!! i watched it and i was crying because alice got forced fed. and i wouldn't want to be force fed
Do you happen to know how the original song writer is? I absolutly loved the movie!! The music was so moving, the picture inspiratinal, and the best damn actors!
Hmm, I don't know. But I can look it up. My teacher told my class a year ago that the song was made up by slaves during the Civil war period. But I don't know if it's true.
Thank you very much for posting and sharing this. I absolutely love the film "Iron Jawed Angels. Just got to watch it again on TV earlier. :) The part where this song was sung by Alice Paul's fellow suffragettes as a sign of their solidarity with her and her hunger strike and their commitment to their advocacy for women having the right to vote always makes me cry, it's so powerful and moving. :) Thanks again! Looking forward to more of your posts.
I didn't just cry during this scene, I LOST IT completely...there's a sense of solidarity in these women that it's so difficult to find nowadays. Thank you so much for posting this!!!
this movie was amzing, that force feeding part almost made me cry, i had to look away, i didnt want to hear the chokeing, but i wanted to hear the songs, like i saw in a movie
I also saw the movie. Awesome is all I can say. After watching this video please click on my video response of a 17 year old who recorded her own version. It's awesome also.
my women's studies teacher used to play this song before announcing Stanton's and Anthony's deaths, then put their portraits up on the overhead! none of us got the reference until we watched iron jawed angels-and i know this song will always remind me of womens suffrage now!
we watched this in my american lit class. This movie is amazing. I didn't know all the things women had gone threw just to get the right to vote. Even though i still don't see why they couldn't vote in the first place.
At the end of movie the song was repriased and it was song by a woman. Does anybody know what I am talking about? If so who was that woman and where can I find the song?
Actors, yes. Singers, well some were, some were just there to make a joyful noise. We had all been working for months through rain, and cold. We had undergone long hours and uncomfortable period clothing and for many of us non-union folk, for very little pay. It was a labor of love and we voiced it in that moment of rebellion and strength.
I would never had known this movie existed if it weren't for a friend e-mailing me exerpts from it. Fatastic. I know I had a great Aunt that was in the movement but never gave it a second thought. These ladies were brave. I would like to get the DVD. Does anybody know it it is available in rental stores?
I remember renting it at hollywood video. If not you could probably buy a used copy on Amazon for pretty cheap. I really reccomend it. Its a strong tv film.
This is my favorite Hillary Swank movie, she is so hot. I love this movie. If you're an American woman you have to see this but it's a great film all around. Very moving, and Swank is an incredible actress.
I love this movie, and its actually when they brought her back, and the rest of the women in the prison start singing, then it goes into the force feeding. I love this movie because it really shows how much we should appreciate the rights we have as woman, look at what these women went through to have the rights that many take for granted today...Thank God for these woman, and this nation.
This movie was vey powerful, I loved it now just think hoe proud those woman would be of us. Today we have a smart women running for the highest office in the land.
More needs to be taught about this amazing movement.
Just imagine: a group of individuals with virtually no power and money of their own fought for 70+ years for the right to vote - and not a single life was taken. No threats - just truth.
It's Alice when she is being force fed. It's during when the protesting women were sent to jail for disturbing traffic. Alice conducted a hunger strike, so that's the noise.
Thank you, thank you so much. The disturbing noises are part of the movie, and one should hear it- they fit well with this clip. Suffering behind a requiem. Well done, thank you, thank you SO much. Watch the movie, it's well done!
In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-giving
