hey, this may be a dumb question but I'm a super beginner when it comes to computers...
I installed ubuntu successfully, then from ubuntu chose windows 7 as my main operating system. Now I'm booting in windows 7 and everthing is great...but I can't for the life of me figure out how to boot in ubuntu. Google / Youtube searches render nothing, although I know it must be extremely simple.
i downloaded Ubuntu as a windows downloader and im deleteing my window folder off my compter do u think Ubuntu will still work?it has a dule boot on it were u seclet your running system at the start im just really worryed becouse i dont want to have to install windows xp 2008 again :/
Hey dude, nice work!I have made a Live CD Ubuntu, but i'm totally new in this stuff, though i really loved the Ubuntu,so i really want to try it on.I have one H.D. in my PC and another one which is USBed.Can i drop the Ubuntu System on that one?Or do i need to make that partition thing? Also is there any collosal risk on this? Thanks in advance and i'll be waiting fro your answear.
Is there a way to make it so it will skip the dual boot menu completely unless I hold down a key or something? I know I could change the boot menu time to 5 seconds or so, but I'd rather not do that, I just want to get rid of the menu unless I need it. I don't use Ubuntu unless I'm troubleshooting and can't get into Windows, and it's annoying that the boot menu pops up after every restart.
@ericasthename That's what this video is about: how to set up a dual boot. this means that you can have both vista and linux on the same computer. you choose which one you want to load when you start up the computer.
@ericasthename if you put these OS's on the same hard drive, then when it comes time to turn back on your pc you will have an option of vista or ubuntu to boot, if you dont choose within i think 10 seconds it will boot to ubuntu or vista. whichever is the "master" its not going to leave you hanging unless you format vista off of your C drive then your stuck with ubuntu until you dualboot again.
That's more complicated because normally a system will boot from whichever HD has priority in bios. You'll probably have to use a fancy boot loader (not grub, but maybe burg). Making partitions on a single HD is more common, in which case yes Grub will detect Windows (but not the other way around).
@Meleemaker HP no like Linux, (netbooks do tho :P) just saying.
I have a Pavilion that came with 4 partitions already on it so i can't make another one (one is HP tools and other is like System tools? Not Sure what they're for). If i were u i'd get an external and load it onto that. Just make sure u don't partition the external and take ur internal hard drive out first! I made that mistake and had to reformat my hard drive today :/
can you dual boot off of 2 hard drives? like the one inside of your computer has windows and an external has ubuntu but they both show up in the selection list?
I try to run it from the boot menu using ubuntu on a flashdrive and I get the screen and I hit the try/run ubuntu and it loads and gets to the point that it plays the cool music theme and the screen stays black for as long as I wait. I am running windows 7 on my HP elite book and I cant just install it because I need admin. I like using the ubuntu because I can remove the firewalls that I otherwise cant. So any ideas or better suggestions(I dont havea CD drive either)
hey, ur video is very helpful, but i have a ?. i am currently running ubuntu 10. 04 i think, GNOME, and i would like to dual boot to Windows XP preferably. how do i go about doing that? i already downloaded the GParted and on the "/dev/sda1" account it is 290 gigs, ive used only 175 gigs. i tried resizing my partition, but it doesnt give me the option to do so. how do i get to that page in ur vid labeled "install". either reply here or email me at ndhiman1122@yahoo.com, thank you

@kintatzu333 SHUT UP!!!!! Windows games are equal to Mac games, I mean, ALL OF THE MAC GAMES ARENT INFECTED!!!!!! With windows you get infected by downloading 92% of the games!!!!!

I just want to make ABSOLUTELY no doubt about this, that installing it won't delete the windows part of your Hard Drive? I can't afford to have that happen so I want to make sure it won't before I try that.
I have a 187 gig harddrive, and about 74 gigs have been occupied, so I'm left with 113 gigs. How much space do u recommend I use? Windows has all my important things on it, and I use windows the most
you didn't mention the migration assistant. would the migration assistant work using this method? my storage drive (not my boot drive) contains or my files and is windows formatted, i wanna be able to mount the drive to access in Ubuntu
@akuleta you have to download a program like easybcd, and it makes it where you can choose between linux and windows. you can probably find tuts on how to do that on youtube.
actually i did the same and it went to ubuntu automatically tried the esc thing doesn't recognize that windows is there so is it ubuntu i need to shrink?

Thanks, this was the best tutorial I've found and the only one that was really clear and made sense for me. However, scatman will be stuck in my head for the next week or so.
hey, i just ordered ubuntu 9.10 is duel boot the same.
also are all the apps. i have windows brought over to ububtu, and are all windows apps. compatible w/ ubuntu (including cracked apps)
im confused on the shrink thing you did before installation, is 10gb the amount of space ubuntu(just the operating system) is taking up of is that the amount of space i can use via abuntu. if so if im on 200gb.h.d. and i assign 50 i wont have any conflict w/ windows ?after xp checks partition everything good?
thx ill try but i wanna know just incase if i can save photoshop on to a usb or CD cuz i dont wanna lose it cuz i had to pay for it........And my school has this but it has Ubuntu, windows and some other one
but i already set up everything, when the dual boot screen comes up, i click windows vista (loader), theres 2, first to boot windows vista, and second for recov.
i try to boot windows vista (loader) (1st one) and it will load, then it just goes black screen... help?
my graphics card is ati 9100/9000 igp 128 mb but can you explain me verry detalied how to instal ubuntu because ive installed ad some errors apers during the instalation and my windows xp crashed
Sorry I didn't reply on this, you should have pressed the reply button :P
In my case,it all went great,I actually Un-Installed and Installed Ubuntu 3-5 times. And all times it worked great.Search on a forum about your problem. If nothing works Try Reinstalling windows and Ubuntu again.
Can I edit the GRUB Boot Loader to change the line of OS's in order to make Windows XP boot first?Or I'll have to change the boot loader to Windows's?I just like GRUB's interface.
I think Wubi is the solution, wubi is ubuntu cept you don't need to split ur partition and crap, and you don't get the GRUB boot menu, it loads to windows boot manager with the operating systems:
If you have vista installed, use a program called EasyBCD. Go to manage bootloader, then click "write MBR" and it will return you to vista's bootloader.
depends mainly on the size of your hard drive....but, yeah with those specs you shouldnt have a problem....usually if you can run xp fairly fast, then you wont have a problem with ubuntu, it'll just be a matter of wether or not you have enough space. good luck!
can you give me some advice... i have a mini-notebook namely HP2133 with 1 Ghz memory and 120 HDD... i tried to make it dual boot. first i installed windows XP. then i installed Ubuntu. the installation of Ubuntu was successful. every time i turn it on it asks me which OS i should choose, ubuntu or windows. the windows works well but the ubuntu doesn't. it boots and loads properly(showing ubuntu logo and the orange line) but after it sounds like a drummer, it doesn't show anymore the desktop.
hi i want to install ubuntu REALLY BADLY but i want to keep everything on my vista and my vista installed witha duel boot. when i put the disc in, does it automatically delete my vista? or does it ask me later like in the video? PLEASE BEFORE I SCREW UP MY COMPUTER
Hi I have been planing on installing ubuntu for some time but I only have 30GB left on my 130GB HDD. However I have a 1TB Western Digital external HD and it seems a waste to use that. My problem is I cant partition it with the Vista disk manager cos it it Fat32 and I already have 115GB of backups and stuff on it that I don't want to delete any of it. Does anyone know how to partition it?
thats a pain in the ass dude... either sacrifice your backups or forget this dual booting.. or ask someone to hold the files that you have on your eHD and format it then partition..
With my 320GB WD External HD, I pluged it in and booted into an Ubuntu live CD. I then used gparted to shrink the filesystem on the External HD. I set the free space to ext3 and set a boot flag. I then ran the installer as normal, selecting my external HD at the partition screen and selecting the partition I had made. Continued as normal until I reached the final screen, where there is an advanced tab. I clicked that and told it to install GRUB to the partition I was installing Ubuntu on.
You are right, but you can still do it within The Live CD =]
But I uninstalled it today (as well as installed lol)
It was really difficult to get my whole partition back to windows.I had to use a program to fix that...Cause you can't uninstall Ubuntu by itself :|
Anyways though I'm planning to reinstall it,i like the wobbly windows on my Radeon 9250 Pro without lag when in windows I can't even move the windows itself....
Oh ok, btw sorry for the typos yesterday I was in a hurry. Well did you give easeus partition manager a go? its free of cnet, thats what I did yesterday on my sisters laptop and it worked perfect :D What did you try to partition it with?

I have a question....
Can I edit the GRUB Boot Loader to change the line of OS's in order to make Windows XP boot first?Or I'll have to change the boot loader to Windows's?I just like GRUB's interface.
Thanks in advance! Great video!
ThExR3V0LVER 2 years ago
go to windows search for boot.ini and open it with notepad cut the ubuntu boot line and paste it under the Xp boot line, save it!
bboybram 2 years ago
Im talking about GRUB,grub is set by Linux
Also, boot.ini is a system file, not meant to be found by search.Searching myself, didn't either find it.

Ok, I've got a quick question..
If I have only Ubuntu installed on my computer, can I partition space for practically any OS?
(for instance, If I wanted to install Windows XP and dual boot with Ubuntu installed first.. would XP show up as an option under the GRUB loader?)
GreyWolfyutuub 2 years ago
I think you can edit settings under the grub loader
to see oher os...you know? :P
ThExR3V0LVER 2 years ago
I think Wubi is the solution, wubi is ubuntu cept you don't need to split ur partition and crap, and you don't get the GRUB boot menu, it loads to windows boot manager with the operating systems:
Ubuntu
Windows Xp Professional Edition
hope that helped

I dont like seeing the grub loader at start up, is there a way around that?
waitn2drive 2 years ago
If you have vista installed, use a program called EasyBCD. Go to manage bootloader, then click "write MBR" and it will return you to vista's bootloader.

easily :)
atila339 2 years ago
depends mainly on the size of your hard drive....but, yeah with those specs you shouldnt have a problem....usually if you can run xp fairly fast, then you wont have a problem with ubuntu, it'll just be a matter of wether or not you have enough space. good luck!

can you give me some advice... i have a mini-notebook namely HP2133 with 1 Ghz memory and 120 HDD... i tried to make it dual boot. first i installed windows XP. then i installed Ubuntu. the installation of Ubuntu was successful. every time i turn it on it asks me which OS i should choose, ubuntu or windows. the windows works well but the ubuntu doesn't. it boots and loads properly(showing ubuntu logo and the orange line) but after it sounds like a drummer, it doesn't show anymore the desktop.
blockbinder 2 years ago
you might be gettng the neccesary drivers to ubuntu....im not sure how you can fix that though...sry

Those with a NTFS need to run CHKDSK first and possibly defrag.

Minifig666 2 years ago
thats a pain in the ass dude... either sacrifice your backups or forget this dual booting.. or ask someone to hold the files that you have on your eHD and format it then partition..
MEtAlDRiCh0689 2 years ago
With my 320GB WD External HD, I pluged it in and booted into an Ubuntu live CD. I then used gparted to shrink the filesystem on the External HD. I set the free space to ext3 and set a boot flag. I then ran the installer as normal, selecting my external HD at the partition screen and selecting the partition I had made. Continued as normal until I reached the final screen, where there is an advanced tab. I clicked that and told it to install GRUB to the partition I was installing Ubuntu on.

Bear in mind, however, that there is always a chance of data loss when screwing with partitions.

Omg Thank you! Thank you! This helped me out :D

You can just get Wubi XD
ThExR3V0LVER 2 years ago
Wubi has lots of bugs, this way is far better in many ways... i dont even want to get into it...
JordanN5253 2 years ago
You are right, but you can still do it within The Live CD =]
But I uninstalled it today (as well as installed lol)
It was really difficult to get my whole partition back to windows.I had to use a program to fix that...Cause you can't uninstall Ubuntu by itself :|
Anyways though I'm planning to reinstall it,i like the wobbly windows on my Radeon 9250 Pro without lag when in windows I can't even move the windows itself....
ThExR3V0LVER 2 years ago
yeah, what i did when i had windows 7 on a partition was i formatted it using EASEUS partition manager and than just expander xp again, wasy :D
JordanN5253 2 years ago
Damn,I am unable to Partition the disk,I dunno why =(
I mean by installer itself...I think I'll try Gparted from the Live CD
Hope I make it =/
ThExR3V0LVER 2 years ago
Oh ok, btw sorry for the typos yesterday I was in a hurry. Well did you give easeus partition manager a go? its free of cnet, thats what I did yesterday on my sisters laptop and it worked perfect :D What did you try to partition it with?
JordanN5253 2 years ago
Hmmm,I used BootIt Ng Partition Manager and a bit of chkdsk to fix some problems, and now reinstalled Ubuntu =]
The problem was sumet on the HD BitMap D:
I fixed it though :P
ThExR3V0LVER 2 years ago
Oh,btw what Program you use to make the bootable disks? I'm using ImgBurn. Its way better than Nero and its really lightweight...
=]

Im reinstalling Ubuntu again...
Because 9.04 hasn't got so many things to do as Hardy Heron LTS (8.04)
I'm done with partitioning once again :d
Im going to install the older...(a passtime lawl :>)
Still tough I don't mind =] I think I love Linux,but I love XP too xD
