Any acronym using the letters ACEG will work for the spaces. I've never heard the one about the caterpillars but it will certainly do the trick.

Yes, but eventually you will see some notes below the staff because the cello goes down to a C below the staff.

It's the same for stand-up or electric bass.
This is how the notes are read on any bass clef staff no matter what instrument you play.
