didnt vazquez change weights just to stop palomino from becoming the four time state champ? if so he is a douchebag lol what if he would have got injured/lost his senior year lol
@GangzxtaD Yeah, but I doubt very much that was WHY he changed weights; wrestlers--all of em, try to get down to the lowest weight they can and still be strong. Far from doing something wrong, he knew he would be taking on a great opponent, and stood up to the challenge.
I love that there's finally video out there of this match, I've always wanted to see it. Probably the most thrilling 0-0 match I've ever seen, and wouldn't you know it, the wrestler trying to become the first 4X CA state champ ultimately loses on a freshman mistake (locking hands). But Vasquez earned it, he was undoubtably the aggressor throughout. Great match!
This was a great year, i wrestled 119 this year and had to wrestle Jason Moreno a couple times, who lost the previous two years to Palomino in the finals, these guys are are great wrestlers no doubt great final
@82midnightrider california still has some of the toughest wrestling this nation has ever seen i live in iowa now but i wrestled out in cali and this state aint got shit on cali wrestling
Why doesn't someone post the video of Darrel and Christian Bowerman in the Semis. Christian had Darrell pinned but the politics behind the match wouldn't allow the ref to make the call....someone PLEASE tell me you have it on video???
@trev2410ball yeah I heard about that match..I've never been it but I heard it was pretty close...Granted Bowerman got killed 18-6 I think but a pin is a pin if that was the case
i was watching a tournament at Independence High in San Jose and remember the huge fan base following Jacob when he steped on the mat. it was really somthing to be seen
What ever became of Palomino after this match? I read that Vasquez went on to become an NCAA All-American and an assistant coach at Harvard, but Palomino sort of vanished.
i remember watching this...and i remember the turning point when the entire arena went in shock...
when jacob was called for locking in the 3rd period.
what was also cool was i had the opportunity to watch them wrestle the 2nd time at the doc buchanan invitational. that match was jus as good as this one. good looking out for posting this up!
yeah I heard about that 2nd meeting..didn't jacob win 5-3?? also I wish someone had Jacob's match vs Schurkamp (state semis) and mid cal finals..those were insane
there's a great feature about this match in 'amateur wrestling news.'

@82midnightrider ..correction: Jacob only wrestled Moreno once in the finals; that was during the 1999 finals (Jacob's sophomore year)

I saw him coaching at Battle Control in San Jose, CA, and i believe he coaches wrestling at Indipendence High School
the guy still has it

Didn't Vasquez go on to be a four timer? I think I remember him wrestling Chase Metcalf from MI in the Senior National finals.
