if our soul has always existed what was the purpose of putting us here on earth. This make no sense. We as souls must have been living peacefully and happily with God before He put us here on earth. can't get my head round the idea that our souls were put in flesh (when we were living somewhere else) before being put here.

Very Good. Yes ... once the temporary nature of worldly life is understood, all unnecessary clinging drop. It is not the same as laziness or dull mindedness.
The difference is here: when all clinging truly drop, even the mind and its concepts drop. Such is the state of a full-bloomed person; extremely active and sharp. However, if mind and concepts don'd drop, it results in many problems such as laziness, apathy etc...
