  • I've been looking for a performance of this piece for ages. Thanks for putting it out there.

  • wow....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Excellent..!!

  • not bad dudes

  • Damn fine! I'm downloading this to keep!! You guys really do capture the dynamics of the song.

  • Still gives me goose-pimples, one of the very best 1000 songs ever done!

  • I don't know this band but they are excellent 'cause this piece is difficult(9/4)

  • The strength of the original band lies in the power of music that involves listeners into the extasy of religious worship.

  • I'd definitely go see you if you were playing anywhere near me. Great redition of a classic Mahavishnu tune.

  • Hey my hats off to you, that isn't like covering Whole Lotta Love. You guys did it justice. And I've seen John live a few times and it ain't always like the record fellas.Great job. However,Jan Hammer's a motherfucker, absolutely badass live

  • not exactly your typical middle aged hobbie band. You guys are great thanks for tackling some interesting and difficult music

  • What a wonderful dedication to the originals. Well played guys!

  • I'm even embarrassed for the cameraman, this is so crappy! JK! These guys are awesome! (unoriginal) but, awesome!

  • Okay... I'm a John McLauglin and Mahavishnu Orchestra fan, so I didn't expect much of this cover. Wow was I pleasantly suprised... Great job!

  • Thanks! BOF was originated with a mission to attempt the MO classic material in late 2009. We soon after expanded the rep with some of our other favorites of the genre - RTF, WR, Beck, Dregs, etc.. It's our "hobby" band project, we pursue it for the love of the music and the personal challenge.

  • just the fact that you can make it through that song is awesome,.... great job guys!!!!

  • Why not try and play instead of lipsynking....

  • You guys sound really good..the drummer would never be confused for sounding like Billy Cobham though.

  • I commend you to have the balls to cover such a mighty band and wow I can't say much more than I was blown away, a masterful cover I'll add to that! BRAVO guys!!

  • wow...amaging cover

  • Love this, you have big bollocks to do this, and it shows your dedication to it. Personally I haven´t gone further than playing Mahavishnu´s bass parts in my room, LOL...wonderful!

  • wow never seen anyone pull this off so well...bravo...

  • haven't got the balls to cover a vishnu track - this makes me want too though

  • Great job guys. You pull it off exceptionally well.

  • Wow!!! Someone has decided that they are up to the task!!!!! I admire you all greatly for this...My best to you!

oh...and by the way,I LOVE this.

  • too bad Billy C. isnt with them

  • @TheOnward1k Yes I think our drummer Gary Rzab would probably step aside if Billy Cobham wanted to join!

  • belle interprétation....bravo !

  • There's a good reason why so few bands attempt to cover the Mahavishnu - this stuff is freakin hard to pull off! The elec. violin and mini-moog/rhodes are key ingredients to the sound, and the BOF do an admirable job capturing the essence of the original MO.

  • This is freaking amazing. More bands need cover The Mahavishnu Orchestra!

  • I am a bit taken back with this...just amazing musicianship, and really captured the feel and essence of MVH.

    Much respect.

  • “When I hear new music coming into my head, its mission is integrated into its notes. It basically tells me how it wants to be.” – John McLaughlin. From Page 1 of the book “Follow Your Heart – John McLaughlin song by song.”

  • There's some rumors flyin around about you Birds of Flame guys, word has it you have been hangin with Chick Corea and Jean Luc Ponty...is it true? Someone said you guys were at the same studio and you laid down some tracks - when do we get to hear them? We're dying to see some more BOF video!!

  • alirght, went into the vid s a total dick... then was like; dayummmm

  • @tlz12345 I'm not sure what that means but we'll hope it's compimentary!

  • @BirdsofFlame

totally... was expecting it to be rough (srsly its birds of fire) but you guys have the most solid cover out there by far. nice work

  • Great job guys, you even have the sound down.

  • I heard this back in '73 when I was graduating from high school and still remember it all

I actually know a few guys that are this good and they live in my hometown, seriously. How lucky am I? No violinist, but a guitar player named Ricky Haydon and a drummer, Larry Vanidiver. Or so I remember.

  • I've been checking out the Birds of Flames YouTube channel. Not only do these blokes cover the Mahavishnu Orchestra catalog, but they also take on material by Jean Luc Ponty, Weather Report, Return To Forever, Dixie Dregs, Jeff Beck and a host of other fusion giants. What's in the water in Happy Valley. Cheers lads!

  • These guys are pretty good but listen to one who was there for The Mahavishnu Orchestra's beginning, saw them live, so many times, all the incantations. These guys are on the mark but check out The Mahavishnu Project. They got Johns seal of approval when he showed up at their show at Iridium in NY and he said why would you want to play the Orchestra's music to their astonishment he sat and listened and thanked the band for bringing him back 30 plus years. This is not to diminish this band chops!

  • @Deaconblue2u Hey man we dig the MP too! They are fantastic. We started this band as a hobby project and have had a great time doing it. New York is the place to be for notice - but we love our Happy Valley in Mass!

  • Who the hell are you guys??? OMG........Outstanding!!!!!! I am speechless.

  • Great job guys :)

  • Great playing!

  • I bought this "LP" when it came out.. Very good rendition of the title track ..

  • awesome song! Kicks the hell out of today's shit!

  • More like blues than Jazz

  • Hey that's pretty good going there lads. As a confirmed MO fan you have done a good job, it sounds like them but you make it sound your own. Let's hope you get bigger audiences for the future!

  • This is a good version but the original is the best

  • @thegerrie19561 Well of course silly-head! Thanks for the good word though.

  • @thegerrie19561 no kidding.......

  • Its much beter then the Brand X version...

Its such a DIFFICULT song to play!!

  • Really first rate effort. Long live Mahavishnu.

  • Excellent brings back great memories of McLaughlin, DeMilo etc..

    great job

  • Thanks to all of you for your kind comments. This was from our very 1st performance just about a year ago in Feb 2010. We've dramatically expanded our reach over the last 12 months. In addition to tackling the classic Mahavishnu, we've added some ambitious material. All the right ingredients in this band - it takes a special mix to pull this shit off. This is our wet fusion dream!

  • ho my god!!! what's an impressive perfomance!

  • Keo ; the Mahavisnu. Did you know that Jann Hammer did all the music for the tv show, Miami Vice? Yep, just him , a computer, a DX88, a bass guitar and a screen to watch the daily's. He'd wing it. Every show.

  • Saw the band at Winterland in SF just prior to it closing. Must have been '72 or '73.

I learned all about John, Billy and Jann at that show. Didn't even need any drugs. It was incredible.

  • @StarVoyager9 the mahavishnu orchestra or the birds of fire?

  • Thats Amazing!

  • Fantastic!

  • Oh, yea..forgot, the rest of the band is fantastic as well!

  • That violin player's the best, he sounds like Allen Sloanov of the Dixie Dregs.

  • nice job fellows! 30 yrs ago i was a logger working 10-14 hr days. and coming home to practice 2-3 hrs with my band. my most restful moments were sitting in a chair with headphones and listening to this song. a spiritual massage

  • Musical territory where few can answer the call.

Very good & way beyond anything I could ever hope to play.

  • Love you guys...amazing, thanks!!!

  • Man that was nice! Great Tribute to them!

  • Thank you all for your kind comments! The Birds of Flame are dedicated to keeping the music of Mahavishnu and the jazz rock fusion masters alive!

Birds of Flame is based in western MA, the band is :

    Bob Cummings Keyboards

    Chris Devine Electric Violin

    Chris Dixon - Electric Guitar

    Randy Tougas Bass

    Gary Rzab Drums

  • one of the very few cover versions which are successful. playing birds of fire has always a risk. thanks, I enjoy your music.

  • Brings back great memories!

  • molto bello complimenti

  • NOT BAD AT ALL

  • Finally, a covers band to believe in.

  • I love it too; and one of the best pieces ever written in the last decades.

Palpably that Indian spice in it. Why did no one follow up that kind of music after 1973 when MO1 disbanded ?

  • i love this

  • Well done version of the original.

  • you're awesome!! it sounds just like them!! :D

  • Awesome! It takes a lot of guts to follow in the Masters' footsteps but you guys pulled it off. Sounds great!

  • A very fine job, guys! love this ambiguous, atonal/bi tonal gem, I'm saving it as a favorite, keep it up!

  • Hey guys, keep it up, good to see/hear the masters being treated with respect.

    Good luck, love and happiness.

Chris Devine - exactly, what do you use on the fiddle (FX) if you don't mind me asking? Tnx !

  • Pretty, pretty good!!! I have a version of "Birds Of Fire" up on my channel that may be of some interest. Peace & Happiness~Jason

  • Great!Excellent! Mahavishnu Orchestra as it is! Om Namah Vishnu!!!

  • Great job guys! This stuff still sounds so unique even after almost 40 years. Long live Mclaughlin!!!

  • Absolutely fantastic!!

    Nice cover!

  • WOW!....Thanks!

  • Thank you very much for your kind comments! We aspire to our idols and this music gives us our Goals Beyond - we have to reach to pull it off well. Other than our hard core MO fans, most people seeing and hearing this music today - are hearing it for the first time!

  • ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!

  • Good Lord !!! I was not aware that M.O. good be tributed !!!!

This is absolutely a magnificient rendition .........

    Congradulations ...I'm blown away !!!!

    Seth Barrette

  • Where is the dobbelpedal? :) Nice, tricky band to play cover of.

  • very good version of Birds of Fire, the intro is actually stunning =D

    peace
