Hey my hats off to you, that isn't like covering Whole Lotta Love. You guys did it justice. And I've seen John live a few times and it ain't always like the record fellas.Great job. However,Jan Hammer's a motherfucker, absolutely badass live
Thanks! BOF was originated with a mission to attempt the MO classic material in late 2009. We soon after expanded the rep with some of our other favorites of the genre - RTF, WR, Beck, Dregs, etc.. It's our "hobby" band project, we pursue it for the love of the music and the personal challenge.
I commend you to have the balls to cover such a mighty band and wow I can't say much more than I was blown away, a masterful cover I'll add to that! BRAVO guys!!
Love this, you have big bollocks to do this, and it shows your dedication to it. Personally I haven´t gone further than playing Mahavishnu´s bass parts in my room, LOL...wonderful!
@BirdsofFlame Michael Tsarion is the worlds premier conspiracy researcher/lecturer/author. Leo Zagami, Jordan Maxwell and Alexandre Dumas pere are highly informative as well. p.s. Melting Euphoria is similar to Ozric Tentacles and Gong.
@BirdsofFlame "Today they [i.e., the Jesuits] are stronger in the United States than they ever were in any of the countries of Europe which expelled them as a menace to the government." (1912)
@BirdsofFlame But those Romanists who do not greatly love the Jesuits, and their number is not limited, use the term as indicating that the Black Pope rules the White Pope...even while the former [i.e., the Black Pope] is obligated to make, at least, a show of submission to the latter." (1896)
M.F. Cusack (Ex-nun of Kenmore; author of the book The Black Pope)
@BirdsofFlame "In Roman Catholic circles it is well known that the Black Pope is the term used for the [Superior] General of the Jesuits. As the Pope is always robed in white, and the [Jesuit Superior] General in black, the contrast is obvious.
There's a good reason why so few bands attempt to cover the Mahavishnu - this stuff is freakin hard to pull off! The elec. violin and mini-moog/rhodes are key ingredients to the sound, and the BOF do an admirable job capturing the essence of the original MO.
“When I hear new music coming into my head, its mission is integrated into its notes. It basically tells me how it wants to be.” – John McLaughlin. From Page 1 of the book “Follow Your Heart – John McLaughlin song by song.”
There's some rumors flyin around about you Birds of Flame guys, word has it you have been hangin with Chick Corea and Jean Luc Ponty...is it true? Someone said you guys were at the same studio and you laid down some tracks - when do we get to hear them? We're dying to see some more BOF video!!
I heard this back in '73 when I was graduating from high school and still remember it all
I actually know a few guys that are this good and they live in my hometown, seriously. How lucky am I? No violinist, but a guitar player named Ricky Haydon and a drummer, Larry Vanidiver. Or so I remember.
I've been checking out the Birds of Flames YouTube channel. Not only do these blokes cover the Mahavishnu Orchestra catalog, but they also take on material by Jean Luc Ponty, Weather Report, Return To Forever, Dixie Dregs, Jeff Beck and a host of other fusion giants. What's in the water in Happy Valley. Cheers lads!
These guys are pretty good but listen to one who was there for The Mahavishnu Orchestra's beginning, saw them live, so many times, all the incantations. These guys are on the mark but check out The Mahavishnu Project. They got Johns seal of approval when he showed up at their show at Iridium in NY and he said why would you want to play the Orchestra's music to their astonishment he sat and listened and thanked the band for bringing him back 30 plus years. This is not to diminish this band chops!
@Deaconblue2u Hey man we dig the MP too! They are fantastic. We started this band as a hobby project and have had a great time doing it. New York is the place to be for notice - but we love our Happy Valley in Mass!
Hey that's pretty good going there lads. As a confirmed MO fan you have done a good job, it sounds like them but you make it sound your own. Let's hope you get bigger audiences for the future!
Thanks to all of you for your kind comments. This was from our very 1st performance just about a year ago in Feb 2010. We've dramatically expanded our reach over the last 12 months. In addition to tackling the classic Mahavishnu, we've added some ambitious material. All the right ingredients in this band - it takes a special mix to pull this shit off. This is our wet fusion dream!
Keo ; the Mahavisnu. Did you know that Jann Hammer did all the music for the tv show, Miami Vice? Yep, just him , a computer, a DX88, a bass guitar and a screen to watch the daily's. He'd wing it. Every show.
nice job fellows! 30 yrs ago i was a logger working 10-14 hr days. and coming home to practice 2-3 hrs with my band. my most restful moments were sitting in a chair with headphones and listening to this song. a spiritual massage
Thank you very much for your kind comments! We aspire to our idols and this music gives us our Goals Beyond - we have to reach to pull it off well. Other than our hard core MO fans, most people seeing and hearing this music today - are hearing it for the first time!
I've been looking for a performance of this piece for ages. Thanks for putting it out there.

The strength of the original band lies in the power of music that involves listeners into the extasy of religious worship.

I'd definitely go see you if you were playing anywhere near me. Great redition of a classic Mahavishnu tune.
