That black sand looks great. I used to have white sand in my goldfish tank but it would get inside my filters and all over my goldfish. It would stick to them and look like little white spots, which made me have little heart attacks thinking it was ich/ick or something.
I love your Orandas, i just upgraded to a 29 gallon from a 20 gallon. I got the 29 as part of the dollar per gallon sale, I would not have known about the sale if I did not come across your video. I also added Tahitian moon sand, mine made my tank very cloudy and there are bubbles in it, is this normal ? How long does it need to sit for ?
@DefyingGravity767 oh, I'm glad you found the video! Congrats on the new tank :) Did you use the "instant aquarium" or 'supernaturals' type of moon sand? Did you rinse it? The supernaturals needs to be rinsed a lot to get the water to run clear, and I actually found that I needed to rinse the instant aquarium kind a couple times too even though you're not supposed to have to.You could try doing a couple back to back large water changes to clear up the particles :)
@tithra33 Thank you! And it actually is the Petco brand of black sand. I did rinse it, did about 2-3 water changes since yesterday and the sand looks great. Only problem is now the ammonia level has spiked way up to 2ppm, as I said before I have done 2-3 25-50% water changes and only a slight drop in ammonia. I am using a filter that was already on my established tank that has been running for about 3 months now, is it still cycling ?
@DefyingGravity767 Yes, a reading of 2 ppm ammonia would indicate you are either still cycling or had a cycle bump. Did you have established gravel in the tank before that you replaced with the sand by chance? The other possibility is ammonia in the tap (which would account for ammonia not going down after a water change. Have you tested your tap for ammonia? Are you using a drop test kit or strips? I would recommend getting some Seachem Prime water conditioner if you..
@DefyingGravity767 don't use it already. Prime detoxifies ammonia for a period of 24-48 hours (but leaves it in a state where it is still available to your beneficial bacteria, unlike some products like ammo lock that can starve your cycle). So, it is great to use when you are cycling. You can safely use a double dose, which I would recommend until you figure out what's going on :)
@Hotlips4000isback Do you have any videos up of your tank? I'd love to see it. I tried to go to your page to look, but didn't see any, but I may have just missed it : )
I don't have my main tank uploaded ATM as i'm changing it over to a Tropical setup. My fish in that one (Milco :) is being moved from a 29 (UK) gallon tank to one a bit smaller in my office. It will be on it's own and very much pampered :p(I have had it for five years, and it's got quite big. stopped growing now though.
My old tank is leaking so i'm gonna fix it then set it up for tropical fish.
I do have one video of my Q tank up, I'll post you the link :)
@acidglow they're good! : ) They are now in a 40 gallon breeder tank. My bronze oranda just had an internal bacterial infection, but he has recovered after 3 weeks on antibiotic meds : )
Beautiful tank! Way to go on the Over filtration! So many people "just get by" with what they think is enough for the tank... (30 gal per hour for a 30 gal tank) But goldies (being swimming pigs) and super sensitive fish (like discus) need that Filtration like that you have successfully provided! WELL DONE!
@danichan19 Thank you! I upgraded to a 40 gal. breeder recently (there's a video on my channel). They certainly are little water piggies. It's all about water quality with them! : )
I have a 20 gal right now(tropical) with a bio wheel rated at 150 gph, I have been searching for a canister filter for the future tank. Most of the vids have been about people complaining about how eheim leaks as well as others. But now I know I want to be shooting for 550 gph or 750 gph. Dependent on the tank size of course. I appreciate the help, you rock!
@SkullSquadronVF84 I really like it, but it is certainly not as easy to clean/maintain as my aqua clear : ) The self priming feature is really nice, but honestly I still have to look at the manual each time I need to start it back up after cleaning because I can never remember how to do it lol. But I think it is a great canister. Quiet, lots of room for media, and I haven't had any issues with it so far! : )
@SkullSquadronVF84 If you keep goldfish, it does not do enough gph to be the only filter on a 55 or 75. The one I have is the largest of this line (2236) and it is rated for 80 gallon tanks, but it only does 159 gph. With goldies you want to shoot for at least 10x gph because they produce so much more waste than other fish, so for a 55 gallon filtration should be 550 gph. Plus there is some evidence to suggest that once you add media etc. canister filters lose between 5-20% of their output.
@SkullSquadronVF84 This is why I run the canister in addition to an aqua clear 70. The aqua clear gives me a good amount of gph (300), while the canister gives me lots of extra space for media in order to ensure good biological filtration. Now, if you keep tropicals the Eheim may be enough, but I don't know enough about tropical fish keeping to say one way or the other ; )
I'll tell you that any plants i add to my goldfish tanks becomes breakfast, lunch and dinner really quick. Don't know how you do it! Everything looks so health plant wise i mean. i hate using "wow", but i have to again, "wow". great work :)
@fishforme2 haha, I really think I just got lucky with these two. They have never even so much as nibbled on anything I put in the tank! It's so odd, I used to think, oh if I go on vacation I'll just put some anacharis in the tank for them to munch on, but honestly I think they'd starve to death before they figured out it was food lol. Luck of the draw I guess! : )
Can I put 2 big goldfish like these in my 26 gallon?

@Squwigy thank you :) I've actually gone back to a bare bottom tank since this video. The sand was short lived, I much prefer bare bottom.
