I was out at the college when this happened, the radio chatter sounded like he had a "fire light." I'm not a pilot nor a&p, so I'm not saying it was this or that. Just what I heard over the comms.
He had to do a Flame Out (landing with no engine) hence the reason for his wingman being there. This was not part of the air show and the FO was executed with text book precision! Great controllers and pilots.
@chschluter Thanks for your comment! Do you have any official documentation (or a link) on that? I had heard it was a canopy pressurization issue, but was waiting for confirmation.
@eagleswingsrc There is no official documentation that anyone can get there hands on outside of the people who work here. I was working the the RAPCON that day and got to see this first hand. He had an engine problem and the reason for his wingman is to talk him down to the runway/watch to make sure he flares at the right time do to the pilot not being able to see (angle).
@PD300ify Yes, we saw the tow as well. I've tried to find out more information about the landing and it's possible that it might have been due to a pressure seal. Until I have official confirmation though, that's just speculation.
One of them had a problem here at the Dayton Air Show on the 23rd, they said over the p.a. that it kept blowing a fuse and they ended up having to switch over to a spare plane. I cant exactly remember if it was the #3 OR #4 jet, but I want to say it was the #3. Glad they made it back safe and sound:)
@biggare1980 Wow, that is very interesting, especially if it did happen to be the #3 aircraft! Hopefully everything is working fine now and they don't have any issues from here on out!
I am glad that the pilot was ok. I work at LCCC an noticed when the Thunderbird's came in on Monday morning that the #4 plane wasn't in the formation. Then when they flew the practice run that afternoon I noticed that the #3 plane wasn't there. I am glad that the pilots are OK. They do a great job year in and year out. Just a little advice. If you are going to watch the Thunderbirds, go out to the college for their practice performance at LCCC. Then on Wednesday, go see them leave at the airshow
@wyomingbullfighter We saw the same thing with their formations as well! My in-laws live at College & Dell Range so we had a great view of their entry Monday morning, then we watched them practice from the intersection of Campstool Road & College Drive that afternoon. We lived in Cheyenne for about 7 years - it's a fun town!
Thanks. We were driving to Dairy Queen and when we passed the runway we saw the explosion and started freaking out and pulled over to watch for a second.
I watched this, too. Did you see today? Do you know what that huge explosion was? I'm not sure if it was fake or not. Nobody was alarmed so it may have been a stunt.
@cherryprincess981 I wasn't there today, but read in the paper that the explosion was from the A-10 demonstration team. They were going to drop a "bomb" (a preset pyrotechnics display) and then a C-130 was supposed to put out the fire with its water drop tanks. Hopefully we'll be able to be there for the full air show next year!

@wyo7011 I was wondering if someone with a scanner would chime in! I didn't have mine with me, so thanks for the update.

@cherryprincess981 Not a problem at all! Better safe than sorry, but I believe that it was definitely part of the air show!
