I also like that HIDDEN items are on the radar, but they only show up on the radar when you clear out a room, so you don't automatically know where every item is in the room until you kill all the enemies.
If you don't like "empty" games where there's only you and the monsters but no one you can interact with, then I don't presume that you like the Myst games? Cuz they are really awesome but you also rarely meet anyone. But I really like that kind of point 'n click game.

While I disagree completely with your opinion on the Prime series, I agree with a big portion of your Other M review. The game didn't capture me, and I just couldn't finish it. I never really wanted to since I just didn't care for the game.
It was a pretty good game, I recently bought it. I beat it and the secret final boss, I have yet to get all the expansions. Did anyone find it weird that the enemies were tougher than the bosses for some reason, with the exception of the secret final boss....but whatever. The plot ending was pretty dissapointing, I was expecting more of a final boss than that. Oh well, while it's definately not as good as most of the other games in the series, it's much better than Metroid Prime: Hunters.
People wil hate me for saying this too but I enjoyed Metroid Other M more then Resident Evil 4 and Mario Galaxy, and I personally found both Mario Galaxy and Resident Evil 4 to be vastly overrated although this could also be because there not my cup of tea in terms of gaming.
I loved the first Metroid: Prime. Couldn't get enough of it. But I'm a first-person kinda guy. Prime 2, on the other hand, I hated. It was too tedious, the objectives were far too obscure, the Dark World thing just turned me off, mostly since the Ing were such a pain in the ass, especially with the Power Beam, which you were forced to use often, because every other beam used AMMO. Horrible design choice.

No health pickups? Use and abuse the Concentration function. You can upgrade the concentration health cover and it'll save you in boss fights.
The view mode switching was UTTER CRAP. Yep, gotta agree with you on that haha It forces us do the power ranger hand motion to quick switch.
And the authorization made me curse Adam's name for the whole game, even at that "last" fight.But the combat as much more intense and throwback bosses XD
I beat the game under 9 hours, I'm a Metroid fan though and I did enjoy it, it added a really cool new dimension to the Metroid series altough the game was far from perfect.
I hope Nintendo gives the Other M kindof Metroid game another shot though, they just need to expand upon the gameplay a bit more, Nintendo has never been one to push story over gameplay but apparently Team Ninja managed to get them to make that mistake this time.

I've played half a prime game and Metroid Fusion. my point being that I don't really know much about Metroid, but I got Other M and I can honestly say I never had any of these problems. I found the combat to be very fluid, I did not need to mash the dodge buttons.I found it very easy to flip between third and first person on the fly. I'm finding the game to be fantastic. Oh also, I have never died and been sent back to the last savepoint, I just end up back at the hallway before I died
I forgot, you can regain energy and some health by holding the Wii mote up right and hold A. This makes up for no energy being dropped or missle replenishments by defeating enemies

Well, I understand why you aren't in the Metroid series. As a fan of platformers more like Sonic or MegaMan, where you go linear, you know what to do, get more interaction, few or nule exploration; is very understandable, why Metroid is not that great for you.

I liked the plot of other m, and I'm not going to wail on you for saying Metroid Prime is bland, but there's this little thing called SUBTLETY. Some people just want a game that does all the work for them, but MP makes you THINK. Sorry if it didn't have enough explosions and boobs, but it has atmosphere. If it didn't appeal to you and you could appreciate it, well, I guess it was simply a little too... "elevated" for you. Sorry.
Metroid Prime executed first person platforming a LOT more fluidly than you give it credit for. It's a bit difficult to control, but once you grow accustomed to it, which SHOULDN'T take very long, it becomes a masterpiece.

Hey Clement, you've never played Prime 3 have you? It has stacking beams along with the same kind of linearity this and fusion have and the wii remote aiming. I love the Prime series, great games.The physics were realistic enough to where I could always tell where I was going, even in 1st person.
This game, I don't have, but it sounds full of minor annoyances to me. I can usually get over those and call a game great, but thanks for the opinion.

I agree with Metroid Prime....I wish it just kinda gave you a nudge in the right direction...you're just thrown in there and get lost for ages. I've clocked in about 12 hours and I'm nowhere near close to finish - I just got my space boots.
Metroid other M impression for me was a terrible one, didnt like the control, they should have analoged the movement not with D Pad. Combat sucks big time and Im a hardcore metroid fan, wait till yall play it, youll see what I mean. The worst part is Samus talks and they could have made it look better, HD tv makes the game look bad and to dark. I can go on and on, dont get me started on energy replenishing, there is none. Metroid other M not doing good so far.
I just bought the game today I traded two games to game stop and used my friends discount card the total for the game ended up being a 1.40 I thought that was a good deal I originaly thought it was going just take 40 dollars off so I brought 30 dollars just in case so I got some older ps2 games as well
I love the Metroid games, and I am really enjoying it so far. I understand why someone wouldn't be like the combat system, but I liked it. The monster-jumping-at-you-from-nowhere and kill you instantly if you doesn't dodge scared the hell out of me, still does.
I was also crushed by a elevator, laughed my ass of when it happened.
I agree about the combat and the controls for it. I don't mind the switching between views, but what I despise is having to aim directly at the point to lock on, with the same button you use to look around, which Prime 3 never needed. This sucks especially with multiple enemies, and a specific part deeper into the game where you can't move or dodge, and enemies get in your face while you lock on to another enemy. Before that is a long plot filled cutscene after a boss fight and no save point. :/
I pretty much agree with all your points, except I found some of the plot just plain lazily applied and the voice acting sub-par. Oh, and I'm a huge fan of the metroid series and I find this game very disapointing.

I loved the GBA games. (Especially Fusion! Best F***ing game i've ever played! i love it!) I actually think Super Metroid is really overrated! I like it and all, but it was very confusing and was a 'get-yourself-lost' kind of game. So yeah, i agree. GBA all the way!
I'm not an obsessive Metroid fanboy, but I do like the games. I liked this review for the most part; I agree that the enemies not dropping health is pretty stupid, but I actually like the combat, even though I had to get used to it. I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I believe Batman: Arkham Asylum was the best Metroid game this console generation. It had exploration, the gloomy atmosphere, weapons/tools/items you had to acquire during the game, backtracking, isolation... I think whoever develops the next Metroid could learn a thing or two from it.
I liked the review, pretty good for a basic review series.
As for the game, I'm with you on the series as a whole. I don't think they're bad games but I just never got into the series. I was thinking Metroid Other M looked more interesting though, especially the great cutscenes and graphics. Personally I thought it was just an interesting twist to most nintendo games with the cutscenes being there at all, since in other nintendo games even if there is cutscenes they're usually just text
just to comment metroid prime 1 and 2 had a very different style of story telling. you had to scan computers and wall lore to find out information and back stories about the planet, the chozo, animals, and the space pirates (I loved the unexpected humor from their logs) and i actually liked that approach. it was there for those who wanted an understanding of the world and they didn't force it down your throat.
also, i've noticed among metroid fans a huge divide. either love or hate for other m
It's a very different game, but personally I'm liking it. I can definitely see why some people don't, though. One thing I noticed (and hate) is the lack of music! There's ambiance noise usually, but I haven't noticed much of the great metroid music that we all love and have come to expect!
And don't worry, I wasn't too big on Prime either :D
Being told by a "Navigator" type person all the time so that you can't really have time to backtrack? My gosh it's the flaw of Megaman X5 and X6 (which just plain sucked) all over again! Damnit Alia, why did you have to change your gender and infiltrate the Metroid universe?
@cascoll2000 If you loved Super Metroid, then you should try Shadow Complex on the Xbox Live Arcade. The game play is really similar with item collecting and exploring and such.

@Redbook6 I never finished it. As I say in the beginning of this review, these are rentals, and unless the game was short, I probably didn't beat it. I played for quite awhile though. Like 5 hours. Haven't finished yet.
@Redbook6 the main story can easily be completed in around 8-10 hours, i myself completed the story in just over 9 hours and completed the whole game with all the items in just over 14 hours, a very short game in my opinion...
Oh come on now, you could hardly call the elevator death unexpected. When I saw my friend playing it, I knew right away what was going to happen, but I encouraged him to do it anyway, and I laughed at the results. >:D

Dude there is a reason these are called EXPLORATION GAMES, if you don't fricking like finding things out for yourself oer what is not linear, or something that is holding your hand through it, then DON'T PLAY THE DAMN GAMES. I just want the people who whatch this review to know one thing THIS REVIEW IS BIAS HE DOES NOT LIKE THIS GAME, I WOULD SUGGEST OTHER REVIEWS! I mean if your thinking about getting it i thought it was great, and you can increase how much you heal, just try another review...

I liked the plot of other m, and I'm not going to wail on you for saying Metroid Prime is bland, but there's this little thing called SUBTLETY. Some people just want a game that does all the work for them, but MP makes you THINK. Sorry if it didn't have enough explosions and boobs, but it has atmosphere. If it didn't appeal to you and you could appreciate it, well, I guess it was simply a little too... "elevated" for you. Sorry.

Metroid Prime executed first person platforming a LOT more fluidly than you give it credit for. It's a bit difficult to control, but once you grow accustomed to it, which SHOULDN'T take very long, it becomes a masterpiece.

great review. i agree with a lot of your problems with the game, but naturally i disagree with some aswell since i am a metroid fan. i just think some of the decisions they made were a little too "off the mark."

Hey Clement, you've never played Prime 3 have you? It has stacking beams along with the same kind of linearity this and fusion have and the wii remote aiming. I love the Prime series, great games.The physics were realistic enough to where I could always tell where I was going, even in 1st person.
This game, I don't have, but it sounds full of minor annoyances to me. I can usually get over those and call a game great, but thanks for the opinion.

i still love your reviews, but metroid is still has a place in my heart, lol. i like the gameplay of other m and found it very stimulating, and i like the plot and backstory. though metroid isnt my favorite game (that would be ocarina of time) i still think it is better than you portrayed it here, but i understand your points and why you found the game unappealing. i hope you upload more rocket knight adventure soon :D

Too bad you didnt like it that much though. Given how thoroughly you know megaman and the backstory, if you would make Metroid LP's with the same treatment would be nothing less than awesome. oh well....

I agree with Metroid Prime....I wish it just kinda gave you a nudge in the right direction...you're just thrown in there and get lost for ages. I've clocked in about 12 hours and I'm nowhere near close to finish - I just got my space boots.

Metroid other M impression for me was a terrible one, didnt like the control, they should have analoged the movement not with D Pad. Combat sucks big time and Im a hardcore metroid fan, wait till yall play it, youll see what I mean. The worst part is Samus talks and they could have made it look better, HD tv makes the game look bad and to dark. I can go on and on, dont get me started on energy replenishing, there is none. Metroid other M not doing good so far.

I just bought the game today I traded two games to game stop and used my friends discount card the total for the game ended up being a 1.40 I thought that was a good deal I originaly thought it was going just take 40 dollars off so I brought 30 dollars just in case so I got some older ps2 games as well

I love the Metroid games, and I am really enjoying it so far. I understand why someone wouldn't be like the combat system, but I liked it. The monster-jumping-at-you-from-nowhere and kill you instantly if you doesn't dodge scared the hell out of me, still does.
I was also crushed by a elevator, laughed my ass of when it happened.

I agree about the combat and the controls for it. I don't mind the switching between views, but what I despise is having to aim directly at the point to lock on, with the same button you use to look around, which Prime 3 never needed. This sucks especially with multiple enemies, and a specific part deeper into the game where you can't move or dodge, and enemies get in your face while you lock on to another enemy. Before that is a long plot filled cutscene after a boss fight and no save point. :/

I pretty much agree with all your points, except I found some of the plot just plain lazily applied and the voice acting sub-par. Oh, and I'm a huge fan of the metroid series and I find this game very disapointing.

It's all a matter of opinion, and I value yours.Personally, I really enjoyed Metroid Prime 3, and I agree with you about the cheap, QTE deaths in MotherM.However, I think the combat in this game isn't bad.It's simple and that's what the development team was aiming for.But like you said, you dislike the combat, so that's still a matter of opinion.
Overall, this is a pretty good idea, and I'm looking forward to your next quick review, Clement!

I loved the GBA games. (Especially Fusion! Best F***ing game i've ever played! i love it!) I actually think Super Metroid is really overrated! I like it and all, but it was very confusing and was a 'get-yourself-lost' kind of game. So yeah, i agree. GBA all the way!

I'm not an obsessive Metroid fanboy, but I do like the games. I liked this review for the most part; I agree that the enemies not dropping health is pretty stupid, but I actually like the combat, even though I had to get used to it. Stuff like this is just a matter of personal taste, I guess. Nice work, Clement! Looking forward to more :)

I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I believe Batman: Arkham Asylum was the best Metroid game this console generation. It had exploration, the gloomy atmosphere, weapons/tools/items you had to acquire during the game, backtracking, isolation... I think whoever develops the next Metroid could learn a thing or two from it.

I liked the review, pretty good for a basic review series.
As for the game, I'm with you on the series as a whole. I don't think they're bad games but I just never got into the series. I was thinking Metroid Other M looked more interesting though, especially the great cutscenes and graphics. Personally I thought it was just an interesting twist to most nintendo games with the cutscenes being there at all, since in other nintendo games even if there is cutscenes they're usually just text

just to comment metroid prime 1 and 2 had a very different style of story telling. you had to scan computers and wall lore to find out information and back stories about the planet, the chozo, animals, and the space pirates (I loved the unexpected humor from their logs) and i actually liked that approach. it was there for those who wanted an understanding of the world and they didn't force it down your throat.
also, i've noticed among metroid fans a huge divide. either love or hate for other m

It's a very different game, but personally I'm liking it. I can definitely see why some people don't, though. One thing I noticed (and hate) is the lack of music! There's ambiance noise usually, but I haven't noticed much of the great metroid music that we all love and have come to expect!
And don't worry, I wasn't too big on Prime either :D

@cascoll2000 If you loved Super Metroid, then you should try Shadow Complex on the Xbox Live Arcade. The game play is really similar with item collecting and exploring and such.

Actually it is. 3rd person is what the 2D Metroids are. It's just Other M has a "1st person" mode that works like the Prime games.

@Redbook6 I never finished it. As I say in the beginning of this review, these are rentals, and unless the game was short, I probably didn't beat it. I played for quite awhile though. Like 5 hours. Haven't finished yet.
