I'm from Canada, and ice hockey is by far our most popular sport. The game is fast paced, can be played with brute strength or pure skill, and is one of the only professional sports leagues to still allow fighting in-game. Canada in the winter allows for perfect "pond hockey" conditions, meaning that renting a skating rink is not necessary to lace up the skates. In Canada we have TSN (Canadian ESPN), and hockey is given major coverage compared to other sports.
