Yes you do need the L and R buttons!

Some ability cards can be used during a battle and you have to press L or R to activate it! These Abilities are mostly Red Ability Cards! The Ability Cards where you use L and R can be activated whenever you want during a battle while other abilities are activated at the start of a battle!
