I don't think the movie is hard to understand at all, Aliens are conducting experiments on humans, one of the experiments is to determine whether mankind will put other peoples lifes before personal gain, whoever opens the Box will be punished, if the majority of people open the Box mankind will be exterminated.

FYI, i'm well aware that Aliens made the kid blind/def, made Norma lose her job and Arthur's application get reject.

This is a very underrated film IMO... loved it!

@Tabitha43 it is actually another thing, some people judge this movie because it's hard to understand. Their son wasn't ill, when they kidnapped him they made something to him to lose two senses. And they made her lost her job, and he to be rejected for his application to pushed them harder to make the decision of pushing the bottom or not. whatever they are aren't human, and they moved everything around their lives to take them to that place.
