there are more people who play sports and celebrate the culture of amateur and pro sports than minority mass produced 'hip hop'. Adidas FAILED because they only positioned their brand in a select area. Nike made running 'available' for the masses....then got Michael Jordan to save their company.
Most of Nike's most memorable commercials came from the late 80s-early 90s. They were doing that Coke thing by getting into peoples minds and truly inspiring them through slogans and advertising. They were transcending beyond other athletic companies. Adidas had momentum and dropped the ball by not pushing their product through Hip-Hop in the 80s. By marketing thru Hip-Hop, it would have created a tangent market that could have touched the everyday man in ways an athelete never could.
Had always seen the version with the type - the international/symbols version I'd heard about but never seen! Great. Pittman Hensley on the type? Yes? And Fincher behind the camera! Great stuff - shots that hold up twenty years later - poetic and honest and human. W+K at its very best -
HOW LOOOONG HAS NIKE BEEN MAKING EXCELLET COMMERCIALS!!!!!!!! This was the early ninties. The energy, editing, photography, graphics and MY GOODNESS the music of the great John Lennon - It was THIS COMMERCIAL that made me want to find out as a teenager who made this song!!! It almost cheapens to call it a commercial - it is truly art. Nike has kept that standard until today. Big companies do what big companies do, but on this end - it is fantastic.
This was the first ad I remember that made me look up from whatever I was doing (ignoring the TV because it was 'commercial time') and watch and I felt INSPIRED.
I remember my mother's reaction, after the first time we both saw the ad, "What? That ad didn't make any sense!" ... I guess because there were no words, no one trying to 'sell' you anything.
"called me out"? Are you that gay in real life? First off fatty, what did i say that was wrong? John Lennon was a socialist. Nike is a huge corporation. I made note of the irony of the two being used together. You're the idiot that made an ignorant comment about country videos. Go put your sweat pants on and watch some anime you fat super-suck-on-seven. what fuckin' idiots I have to deal with!!!!!
You're 37 and acting like a 12 year old. Look at you getting all worked up. You're an absolute ass who watches cooking videos and old country music showcases. Think you're above me? Shut your stupid face.
You started by commenting on one of my comments. A comment that had nothing to do with my point. Does baby feel like he has to have the last word. ahhhh how poor baby must have been neglected.
Here's what confuses me about pussies like you. You make some stupid comment in response to mine, which has been the only actual point you've made in this entire chain. Then, you sit back and "try" to criticize my responses to yours. Well, I'm growing tired of you. Here's the deal. Your approval is dead bottom on my list of needs.
Being called stupid, moron, douche, immature or any of the other pansy retorts from you are actually compliments. As long as the fat kids like you hiding behind your keyboard don't like me, I know I'm OK. You win, I truely have better things to do with my life then these lovely back and forths that you've had the pleasure of having.
I'm sure you've learned a lot. I will NOT be reading any replies from you. I'm sure you'll post them, that what you keyboard warriors do. I hope it makes you feel like a man.
Hahahahahah, Luis, your a sad fat boy that watch cartoons and ghost busters. You try to "call me out" by making a stupid comment about about country music. I still don't understand your point. Then you block replies on you other video....you're very sad.
W&K actually got the music rights for this spot from michael jackson, who at the time owned the rights. after it went to air, yoko ono made a direct call to (from what i have heard either) phil knight/ W&K and asked that it please be pulled, as it was not in the spirit of john lennon to have his work used for commercial purposes. they pulled the spot. class move on the behalf of nike.
