  • I love all three of these guys, but I have to admit I dig Larry's solo the most, but the incredible thing is he's doing it on a twelve sting...

  • Coryell and Di Meola are great players but predictable. Lagrene brings out something new and so different in his note choices. He has just as good a technical ability as Di Meola with more inventive sounds. Coryell knows how to energize the audience, too.

  • @banjoneely Larry... predictable? lol. He is the only innovator on stage.

  • i prefer the genuine spanish guitar sound and not the acoustic guitar, but it was a great trio anyway

  • It is a little bit rough Al playing the theme

  • After the song was done, the guitar strings were quoted as yelling "UNCLE!!!!!!"

  • @cosmiclight Larry isn't exactly much older, or whatever. Eleventh House wasn't out that much earlier than when Return to Forever signed on DiMeola.

*Stratoleft: Not sure what I was referring to about Coryell's age but I don't remember comparing the time of Eleventh House to Return to Forever signing on Di Meola. Coryell was playing and performing professionally his early guitar work in the early-mid 1960's when Di Meola was still in middle grade school! Check the Wikipedia history on both.

  • great music ! check my link theagui100 in u tube thanks

  • I apologize for mispelling Di Meola and McLaughlin, as Flamencanta has pointed out. I believe I got Scofield right.

  • one thing al has that many other guys don't is class and style. it's easy to be a hack like gambale.

  • that tone is ghastly

  • What's the name of this song?

The melody in 7:11 to 7:19 it's awesome. I want to play it.

  • @sstargazer004 Ok I googled and the song is called Spain, lol. I thought it was a concert IN Spain, not the name of the song xD.

  • @xemosintightsx More creative than Coryell? Good drugs you have. Do a little research on Larry starting about 1967 ( probably before you were born) and you will find that he has been and is presently one of the great guitar innovators of the past 50 years. That being said, Birelli is one of the greatest guitarists around today. He was an incredible prodigy- I remember seeing him live with a wonderful guitarist Christian Escoude and Birelli was only 12. A monumental talent.

  • @leoosiku what coryell did in this video is definitely FAR cooler than the little tremelo minor licks miola throws around every 5 seconds. that being said, bireli's improv was STILL better than coryell's in this vid. this doesnt say anything about coryell's playing in another environment now, does it? why do people on youtube feel entitled to defend musicians as if that'll help them out in some way?

  • @leoosiku look, i know it's hard to hear bireli b/c the mic guy was a douche, but really try to compare coryell's harmonic concepts to bireli's in THIS vid - we're not discussing what he did in the 60s.

  • @xemosintightsx Actually I prefer Coryells 12 string playing in this vid. Each to their own. And , I was using 1967 as a reference point to begin with Coryell's catalog. This year check out Duality with Kenny Drew Jr fantastic duet and Montgomery - a drumless trio. They are both fantastic. Incidentally, I saw your vid playing summertime and enjoyed it. Good luck in your playing you certainly have the talent.

  • @leoosiku thank you for the view and comment, leoosiku. i will look into the vids you mentioned as well

  • @xemosintightsx Welcome-not vids but cd's

  • I knew Dimaola was not human and here is the proof again :))

  • The music, the skill are stunning but what the hell with all that mandolin-like sound guitar?! They all were quite immature in picking the electric sound back then (let alone picking the Ovation) - just my personal taste for guitar sound!

    Peace

  • Bireli doin much better on himself and Al "showmanship" is a pain in the ass

  • The licks don't mean shit without the chords ( right Guitar Players ? )

  • fucker at 1:00 is strugglin'

  • god bless for uploading this wonder for heavennnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!

  • BELÍSSIMO !!!

    BRAVO !!

  • omg2!

  • incredible, the guy under me has it right

  • SUPER WOOOWW!

  • omg

  • CARALHO

  • that rhythm part on 2:14 - 2:36 was fantastic

  • A total classic!

  • 3:34 3:39 How this technique called ? Larry coryell is playing chords one after other like if he's solloing .. And where can i find this kind of chords arrangement i want to play it in improvisation and in other songs !

Sorryy for my very bad english , i hope you understand what i'm trying to say .

  • @pulseof the technique is actually called chording. A lot like soloing but instead of playing one note you play the chord in the chord progression with the right rythm. Flamenco and Bossa Nova players ahve been doing it for years.

  • @SantomPh Thanks a lot SantomPh for your reply. So all i have to do is find the chord progression of the chord, " A Bm C#/Dbm D E F#/Gbm G#/Abdim " like these ?

  • @pulseof I suppose- the rhythm and beat is more important. I doubt that's the chord progression though- looks like the entire scale there. In this song at least they vamp on a static chord quite often but with varying rhythms.

  • @pulseof and also sometimes they shift fingering to make sus2 and sus4 chords.

  • i m sorry. i think you're loss your sense...... Maybe Al Jareau will be angry if he look you play this instruments...........

  • Great rendition.........but Paco de Lucia...... is missing from this equation!!

  • i hate the chorused guitar in this kind of pieces... i hate it played by an acoustic rather than a spanish guitar

  • This was an absolute gem of a find. SO COOL. Wish Bireli was actually properly mixed into the whole sound... sounded like he was coming out of the PA in another venue. This is the first i've heard Lary Coryell and I think he's sick. Great version. oh and the ending part was fun to hear once but otherwise stupid ending (but who cares, it was top notch playing).

  • This is a fantastic performance. They can go higher - they're that good. They can go higher by slowing down a touch, closing their eyes, and thinking of - España. I am not complaining because they give us a TON in this performance. I'm just acknowledging that I hear those who want more. Nothing wrong with wanting more, so long as you appreciate what you have - so I tell my children. Love

  • My new composition rarely performed (iberian Air) featuring me and the group officina acustica quartet ,(a musical project based on re -interpretation of Gismonti Piazzolla,Corea and many original composition)

Soon my original transcription(NOT TAB) of the song available on my web site.

Thanks to all the web friend who write me for my video!

    claudio bellato

  • Somebody shoot the engineer!

  • BRAVOOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • I feel bad for the last guy. Can't really hear him

  • @leoosiku Might as well leave those alone who do not appreciate these Masters. I do not believe Larry, Al or Bireli need to be defended anyway. Their abilities speak for themselves (to those who a palate for taste). I guess that is why they make $3 bottles of wine for those who cannot appreciate the Master Wines.

  • coryell takes takes this one way more sophisticated

  • Hey MahavishnuBoy, I am not crazy Shawn Lane, the cat can throw down. Check out his "hey T-Bone". I see you are a McLaughlin fan. Saw him many times, as long as 37 years ago. Love John but he still sounds the same. Check out Bireli Lagrene, Sylvain Luc, Guthrie Govan, Stochelo Rosenberg and tell me I am loco.

  • one the worst periode in jazz history ^^

  • Estas loco hombre, ¿Shawn Lane? jajaja

  • I think Larry is cool, and you guys are right that Al Shreds too much. But I don't like the way Larry pics - its awkward and sounds horrible. Bireli on the other hand is I think the magic here...

  • ive always much preferred larrys thoughtful melodic style to the speed playing of al and co......its initially impressive but with repeated listens has no substance.

  • @lens2optic al's does have substance but it's more syncopated and rhythmic rather than melodic...too bad you couldn't hear that...

  • @lens2optic exactly

  • white guitar...

  • I love it, wow!

  • Maestrisimo Larry Coryell

  • I agree Axiluss, Larry's harmonics are amazing. I love Al D's shreds, but Larry has the imagination & creativity so all his songs do not sound the same. I like shred sometimes too-Batio,Shawn Lane stuff.

AND TZAVARIOUS 81 if Larry sucks, who do you think is good?

  • i wouldnt say the 'classic' trio is better. this one made a more fusion flavoured arrangement, and Larry does such harmonically complexed things it's unbelievable... maybe he does not shred as much as di meola, but the notes he play are way more interesting i'd say

  • bireli 8.14-18 - really lame :P

  • al make up his face to nigro?

  • on Al's facebook under his influences, the first name is Larry Coryell. I also believe Bireli was a student of Larry's. I think it said that on their Bolero CD. Larry Coryell, brought us a new sound that influenced me & MANY others. Larry the master of almost every genre.

  • At 5:47 you'll notice the grand master *(Coryell is said to have influenced Di Miola, McGlaughlin, Scofield, and many others - Larry is much older than these guys) * See an earlier work, the "Julia La Belle" piece from "The Restful Mind" here in Youtube he performs on acoustic.

He steals the piece here with his amazing individual jazz mastery that he is in the guitar history books for. They all do a nice job together though. Very nice live collaborative performance from all three.

  • Haha that's so true, the first 10 seconds or so of 5:47 that Coryell plays alone are more inspired than the whole of Di Meola's solo before that ;)

  • @cosmiclight - well, John McLaughlin is infact more than a year older than Coryell

  • McLaughlin is definitely older than Larry - check out his birth date...

  • @cosmiclight Yeah, Coryell's contribution here was the standout. All of these guys are Titans, but Coryell just tore this song a new one.

  • @cosmiclight that extra guitarrist is not scofield is Birelli lagrane who is an excellent guitarrist

  • @cosmiclight agree with you totally, however you could've written at least one of the names correctly..(besides Larry's):DD

  • @cosmiclight Larry isn't exactly much older, or whatever. Eleventh House wasn't out that much earlier than when Return to Forever signed on DiMeola.

  • @cosmiclight He is 23 years older than Lagrene, but only 9 years older than DiMeola.

  • HOLY CRAP!

  • Chick Corea's written lots of great music; when his obit is written (not for decades, I hope), this tune (all props to Rodrigo) will be mentioned every time.

I think this performance of it was stupendous, and anybody that's dismissing the appearance if the "technique" of any of the performers should listen with their eyes closed.

(Leave it to Coryell to burn acoustic fusion on a 12-string.)

  • al is like ....... "silence!" haha

  • Boy that 12 string has such a resonance.

  • the ending is a little bit sloppy

  • al di meola's guitar hads a veeeeeery low action that helps him a lot

  • @asxefv His action isnt any lower then anyone elses. He just has competant hands. I built or repaired everyone of his guitars from 1993-98 action 3 - 2 32nds 12th fret.

  • are you sure that for lagrene's 3 mm at 12 th fret ?

  • I kinda dislike the ending... :(

by the way, why Birelli's guitar sounded quieter?

btw they're playing music, whether you like it or not, but they like it. All musics are good, otherwise no one will like it.

  • Sensacional

Que som eles conseguem com suas guitarras

    é simplesmente maravilhoso

Além de tudo o trio tem aquela alegria explicita de quando se faz uma coisa que se gosta

    ELES SÃO MARAVILHOSOS

  • Very nice groove

    Great music and playing.

    Bravo

    Claude

  • you can barely hear Birelli. i guess that's what happens when you play with egotistical musicians

  • you bet, Al really disliked bireli. Larry loved him and left al to go play with Bireli from then on :P

  • Good stuff.

If these guys were playing in your home town you wouldn't be complaining.

Just because they land big gigs don't mean there up for head cutting for the spotlight. Maybe they just play because they love it and this is how it comes out.

Quit making music a competition because you can't compete in the real world.

  • What sounds shittier than an ovation played with a pick?

An ovation played with a pick with a cheesy chorus pedal added in the loop.

I can't believe Paco played with this guy.

  • i wish i could do riffs like that with my voice at the end there... omg

  • Impressive !!!

  • impresionanteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee IMPRESIONANNTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

MAJESTUOSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! QUE GENIOS POR DIOS!! QUE GENIOS!!!

  • Maturity will come, otherwise McLaughlin would have not called Bireli a "guitar phenomenon." The mix is even set against Bireli, unfortunately. Out of these three Mr. B is the only one who can "speak" of the "Black Jazz" ala, Wes or Benson though he is a French. Not to mention he can execute sweeping better than these "old" guys...

  • @reibian Are you kidding. Larry is an incredible straight ahead player and blues player from the from the very tradition you speak. To help you in your listening check out Larry's cds: Monk trane miles and me, Toko Du, Impressions, power trio live,Inner urge, Major Jazz minor blues,Cedars of Avalon New High. Thats enough to get you up to speed. I hope you are young because you sound it.

  • @leoosiku I guess I like 300 yen bottle of Sake instead of $60 botttle of Bordeaux. In YouTube video "Autumn Leaves Pt1 - Farlow Abercrombie Carlton Coryell " I like Scofield, Abercrombie, the rest and Carlton on the botttom. You can lead a horse to water, but you know... ;p

  • get real guys. Bireli's show-off, un-matured playing can never compare with the well rounded, tasteful artistry of master Al Di-meola.

His phrasing and voicings are just perfect, use of his insane technique limited to where it is needed only - unlike the young and terrible Bireli showing off speed and not much more...

  • @OmriLahavComposer Good god who are you people. "Birelli terrible" get off the critics crutch and go practice - All three of these guys are wonderful in their own way.

  • @leoosiku You want wonderful, go listen to Russel Malone. You *can* play guitar well without shredding the hell out of the same scales and diminished chord arppegios over and over and over again, and I find it tacky and cheap.

  • @OmriLahavComposer Malone is a great player as well. Tacky and cheap is a very good definition of being a blog critic. All high level musicians are good whether you like what they are doing at a particular moment out of the thousands and thousands of hours that they have played.

  • @leoosiku Read back. I *NEVER* said "Bireli Sucks". I merely remarked that in my opinion, his technique-oriented, braggish playing is not where it's at.

On a different note - I have never heard a single thing from Bireli that I enjoyed, and this is coming from a life long jazz and fusion producer.

  • You cannot stand in his shadow, let alone be a judge of his music, You do not have any idea what your talking about. Please stop acting as a child.

  • even at the age of like 50 something. Al still looks like he can get the bitches and look 30 while doin it

  • From what I understand, Bireli is not very fond of DiMeola. An outstanding trio nevertheless. A great concert overall - the video release is very enjoyable. Larry has some very nice moments in the show if not particularly on this tune. It is great to see the Godfather fusion master overseeing this project.

  • yeah, nice version

  • superb!!!!!! AMAZING!!! MORE POWER GUYS!! im a musician myself.

  • I love Bireli!!! My dream trio: Paco, Bireli and Al

  • where is maclaughlin :,(

love these guys, but paco and john i love more ^^

  • wish al wouldnt have been such a jerk and purposely avoided bireli after their short time playing together, at least bireli and larry played together after this...I dont think Al liked bireli at all...

  • Ya, sadly. Al was apparently upset that a 20 year old was much better than him. Larry saw it in bireli and immediately left Al's trio. One day Al will grow up and start playing other styles of music...someday I hope. He is still great in my book.

  • Holy shit Bireli was only twenty years old! I'd be pretty jealous too ;)....

  • Al is amazing!! the best in this!

  • where is paco????

  • was that larry coryell with moustache?

  • ыы, лажа какайато))

    русские рулят! пендосы хреновые

  • remarkable!

  • Al di es un grande..pero tiene una actitud de mierda...

  • por que dices eso de Al di ? yo tuve la suerte de verlo es te mes de Mayo en castellon y fue un encanto !

  • amazing..

  • paco de lucia/john mclaughlin's version is way better

  • Birelli was a kid back than... I don`t think that any of those 2 guitarists are better then him..

  • al played with chick corea when he was 19.

  • this is the kind of thing i expect from someone who thinks he's cool and wants to show off.. not from "the best jazz guitarists in the world"...

this is ridiculous..the end has absolutely nothing to do with the song or whatever..it has no feeling..just show off

    this is not music

comparing this to any of those guys regular playing ...this is crap

  • absolutely super!! the best of all the best...very inspiring...thanks for posting this video...

    RashdanAziz (Malaysia)

  • I always wondered, why one of John Petruccis most important influences is Al Di Meola. Now I just need to watch at 4:35 and I understand =). Great video.

  • great playing but awful mix, Birelli is total lost here

  • Comment removed

  • mne zhal tebia

  • whose the guy on the right?

  • those guys can't play.

    That's a joke....

  • Iv heard better versions..... but still i find it hard to complain about any version of "spain", great song, this isnt the best performance but its still great to see such great musician on stage together.

  • Larry is playing the tune on a 12 string! Not all that easy to do. Much easier to do on a 6 stringer.

  • yea but larry coryell is a God!

  • i will add to my comment that the Paco De Lucia/Mclaughlin version of Spain is way better with a better and more precise playing, Paco and John are more proficient technically.

  • defintely true, john and paco are so much better . no comparison at all

  • John is a monster on a nylon, I dunno how he sounds a tad sloppy when on the electric

  • que porqueria tocan al final!! WHAT A CRAP THEY DO AT THE END!!, its horrible.. nothing musical, the only one who i like hes impro is BIRELI, larry corryel sucks, and so Al di

  • bireli solo is the best and the best of this world

  • Beautiful playing, but I'm not really a fan of the 12-string in this context. >.>

  • @leolardo:

of course I appreciate, no offense intended.

If anything sucks about the vid, it's youtube. not the players, or even you. :-)

  • hm, I remember watching the DVD quite some time ago - and if I remember right, the sound was MUCH better. this one here sounds a little emberassing for a 'super guitar trio'. -> so I suggest not judging this vid, better get the DVD.

  • you really dont appreciate anything do you? i uploaded the mp3 in case of bad quality.due to youtube low standards it has to be coded in shit. i have the dvd .. bah nevermind

  • This is the funniest fucking team guitar playing I've seen since the Wooten brothers and god they are awful.

  • nice

  • so, easy

  • i think al visited advanced hair studio for follicle replacement.

  • this is the best spain version in three guitars!

  • While LC is definitely NOT opne of my favs, props must be given for trying to play "Spain" on a twelve-string. Overall, this is NOT a very good showing for any of these folks.

  • @dorian411:

agreed. I think it's mostly due to the sound, if I remember correctly from watching the DVD it's much better there, great fun. especially Bireli Lagrene (who was a mindblowing discovery for me) can hardly be heard here. overall, to me it just doesn't sound well-blended together. maybe that's because of the stereo (or 5.1) to mono conversion.

and then, yeah, their playing sounds a little un-inspired, workinghorse-alike.

  • Really Love Spain one of the best Jazzsongs i ever heard , thank Chick Corea^^

  • Take Larry out, put back Paco, that would be a helluva trio or did Birelli ever play with Paco?

  • love al's wig, er, I mean hair

  • al or larry's? hehe

  • thank god for hair plugs!

  • I wonder if Larry donated some of his massive mop to Al.

  • Too bad Bireli's solo got buried in the mix, but Larry's solo was something else. Watch Bireli look eagerly as Larry solos. Actually, these three motherf*ck*rs can discourage pretty much any wannabe.

  • The best version of spain! Perfect!

  • Al was a porn stud here.

  • the horniest of all (-:

  • this is the best version of Spain I've ever heard
