opression, obsessioin, passion, pain, shame, injustice, abuse - whatever word you choose to inspire the blues, those devil blues have been around for aeons and experience is universal.
hhahaahahhh amazing how people discuss about black and white.. i thought this discussion was from 30 years ago. I listen to this and im completely in skips vision, i scrolled down and it totally crashes my feelings in this song when i read the commet's precisely under this song? i really dont understand what you're talking about here
@1bibob Its just ignorant to me that those who claim to love this music so much, don't want to acknowledge that it is a product of the black experience during that time period. i.e. Eric Clapton. Do you think the blues would have ever existed if black Americans weren't treated worse than dogs in America . . . . . The best artistic expressions are usually a result of deeply unsettling realities in life . . . . .
@gypsierain1989 True the birth pangs of American Blues... a bittersweet gift to the world, who sing the blues from Afika to Belaruse. Is it more surprising that those ELITES in power exploited tribal wars between Afikans then for profit & global control, as they did when slavery was legal, or should we be more aware concerning what is happening now to all of us, ignorant slaves? Black/white is an illusion, discrimination is evil power please don't feed the beast.
@kickalion Blink 182 would have never existed without Skip James fool. White people kill me. Rock and Roll would have never existed without the blues. The hole concept of Rock as a music of Rebellion and resistance to the larger popular culture is directly a result of these black men and women who were oppressed by white society. Feeling unaccepted, rejected, and refusing to give into "the man" who has done everything to break you is the black experience. U need 2 do your history fool.
@gypsierain1989 rock n roll would have never existed without guitar which is white race instrument from Sweet Home Europe, niggers can't do anything correctly without white mankind
@kickalion More like the other way around, white people are the only true niggers on the planet. They can go into a mans home steal and rape his wife and children and then say he is doing so in the name of God and liberty. There is no use explaining this to a lower life form like you, we both know you don't believe in white supremacy you just want us to believe it. The only reason white people are so threatened by blacks is cause they know what they deserve.
@kickalion White folks have copied and tried to recreate every type of music Black folks have come up with, face it we just have something you guys don't . . . If you love Europe so much then go back there, Oh wait your white trash ancestors came over here cause they couldn't hack it in their own damn country. Shut up racism is so tired . . . It is sad you are of such little substance as a human being that all you can be proud of is being white.
One of my favourite things in life is writing devil-woman lyrics while listening to this song. I have my old neighbour to thank for getting me hooked.
coolest thing is, not only is the tune great but sitting screen right to Mr. James is Howlin' wolf, and to his right, the older gentleman, that's Son House.
I wasn't watching the video, just listening and when I looked up I realized my feet were tapping to the same exact beat he is! Thank you for The Blues!

Since people are talking about U2 for some reason...My opinion? U2 isn't HORRIBLE. They are actually a bit better than most pop rock. None the less I always get the feeling that they (meaning Bono) think that they are WAY better than they actually are. Better than the average drivel on the radio is about the best I can say for them. Now Skip on the other hand. Well lets just say, 5 years after Bono dies, no one will remember him. Skip has been dead how long, & yet you can still find his albums

Amazing what range of expression the blues conveys. And what different sounds! I wish I could travel back to be in that room for the whole time all those guys were taking turns playing.

Together with Robert Johnson, Skip James ought to be considered the pioneers of Blues music that eventually gave birth to Rock, how ironic that these men struggled so much in life and actually die in much poverty, compared that to the so called Rock celebrities of nowadays...., how much we owe them.
@auacur Interesting observations. As for pioneers of blues, you come close to nailing it. However, just because Skip and Robert each possessed both genius and virtuosity, there are many others, and presumably others who weren't ever recorded. Not to take anything away from Skip and Robert but they did not, by any stretch of the imagination, invent the blues. That being said, you are also right - we owe them big.
@auacur Yea Johnson did, but don't think pickin cotton his whole life, he made a living making music. It was hard bein black back then but, think realistic. They had tours and managers and money being made back in the day to. Compared to nowadays yea, but thats not rock, thats pop.
I bought a book about delta blues guitar. It was a low fi square plastic stamp record and had some of the most beautiful sounds I've heard in music and this was one of my two favorites of the bunch. Transports you to another time....

Does anyone know other nocturnal, "calmingly", blues songs? Im familiar with lots of blues artist but maybe someone could provide me with a suprisingly suggestion.
_____GRABBIN' PILLS! Sorry, I couldn't resist. Look at this. Before the zombapocalypse, the dude was havin' a good ol' time. We ALL were. Then some stupid PLAGUE had to come along and mutate everyone... Well, that's ALMOST everyone. Too bad he won't have time to play blues after the invasion.
Where can I find a copy of this version???? any where to download it?? i have the original version he sang thats available on the "complete early recordings" album... HELP! MUST HAVE THIS!
@wakinglifeinc Good Luck.... I have the 1928 album and the "re-recording" from 1964. He said he only did those 'for the money'. His singing and guitar-playing are Just As Good as the earlier one but time (nearly 30 years) can change things in intangible ways. When I got the later one (first) I Knew that it wasn't the one I'd heard. Got the '28 one and That was the one I'd been looking for.
@wakinglifeinc P.S. I'd gladly send you the 60's one but only have it on tape so can't put it on the PC and forward it. Got the '28 one on CD...but you said you have it already. I think the earlier one is better - maybe the freshness of a younger man - but that's Only my opinion/preferance. Hope you can get it - see what You think.

Skip James really amazes me for his playing and soulful voice so thin but very very deep to reach my heart. I just love his style.

Got the '28 one and That was the one I'd been looking for.
slideharp1 1 year ago
@wakinglifeinc P.S. I'd gladly send you the 60's one but only have it on tape so can't put it on the PC and forward it. Got the '28 one on CD...but you said you have it already. I think the earlier one is better - maybe the freshness of a younger man - but that's Only my opinion/preferance. Hope you can get it - see what You think.

I prefer his 60's recordings to the ones from the 1930's. They're cleaner and his voice aged really well.
