because whether you win or not is already dependant on the other person choosing SPLIT or STEAL.
SPLIT + SPLIT = you share the money.
SPLIT + STEAL = you win the money.
STEAL + STEAL = you both lose the money, but there is nothing you can do about it if the other person has chosen STEAL already.
You give the opponent less chance of winning if you choose STEAL from the beginning.

Best strategy? Make a legal agreement that you will definitely split the money you win, and tell the other person you will choose the steal ball. The other person can either choose steal, in which case you share half of nothing, or split, in which case you give them half as agreed. That way you have control and cannot lose. You cannot lie and cheat, as some do. If so, the revenge and counter-revenge scenarios come into play. This is the war-peace variant.

swanningaround- yes, that would also be my strategy. I'd say something like, 'I'm going to steal. After that, I'll write you a cheque for half the amount. I know my integrity is unimpeachable, and does not have a price on it- therefore you must trust me. I will steal whatever, so you don't really have a choice'
...and then reveal the 'split' ball, just cos it would make great telly :D
not sure if you're allowed to make deals like that though...
