The BEST Horror film ever made!! I will try to watch it again this Halloween! When I first saw this in the theatre back in 1975, my hands were shaking leaving the theatre!! Since then, I have loved Horror films - but this one will always be my favorite!! A true classic!! They don't make films like this anymore!!
i remember my parents went to a drive in theater to see this- they took me with them and i was only two or three but i remember my mom freakin out and tryin to cover my eyes lol- they never expected it to be that bad no one did O.O
I'ld have to say that no other movie can compare to this one. I don't know what it is, but its like if there's something that accompanies this movie. Even though this is gonna sound stupid, but it's like if something very evil and powerful helped direct this film. It's not a good feeling.
The Oscar-winning sound design for this film is truly great; listen to 00.32-00.35, which is a mixture of Mercedes Cambridge's croaky voice, the guttural sounds of an animal, and God knows what else.
And again, listen to the surreal, unearthly background sounds at 1.29-1.40.
That said, I was amused to find out that the creepy scrabbling noise heard in the attic was in reality a hamster which was recorded playing and scratching around inside a cardboard box. LOL!
The still shots of the devil in the movie scared me so much, They show up a couple of times but props to the director for that; especially the subway scene with the the preist see's his mom going downstairs, forecasting... Fantastic movie and nothing compares to it like the last exorcism. I thought the exorcism of emily rose was the only other decent one, but this one takes the cake.
They actually showed this trailer before a Disney movie I saw called The North Avenue Irregulars. I didn't even remember much of that movie becuase this trailer absolutely traumatized me. I was around 8 years old. For years after, when I went to the movies I was so afraid that they would show this trailer. Now years later I can grin at the whole experience, but my God this freaked me out. It's still a frightening movie and the trailer is still effective.
At the end of his life, the deadliest gunfighter of the Old West is given a choice: Hell or redemption. He chooses redemption and God's Archangel transports him to modern day Los Angeles to serve bloody, frontier justice on the worst dregs of society.
Im 27 years old and just now finished watching this for the first time. I have heard about this movie my whole life but was too scared to ever see it. It was not scary, it was insane. And depending on your outlook on the whole thing possibly very offensive
I saw this movie once in my life and my mom won't turned the channel. She won't let me watch stuff like this do to it's falmouthing of God. Weird though. She's the one who wanted me to see the movie. But this movie isn't scary, just disturbing.
Omg the first time I saw this movie it scared the living poop out of me!!!!! I put it on mute most of the time, but now when I watch it I'm not scared, just spooked. I wish I could be terrified as j used to be
I'm 25 now and still can't really handle this movie, though I like any kind of horror movies, but this one is just scary as hell. It still terrifies me and to be honest I can't even look at some of the thumbnails you'll get by searching for "exorcist" in google ^^
The reason the film is do scary is because it's depressing/disturbing. In most horror films they give you a break from time to time, this film is relentless, it does not give you a break !
Probably why it's one of the greatest horror films is perhaps it's seriousness than of any other horror films. Especially ones that may have bad acting in them. I'm not naming any of those kinds.
This just proves that there's a big difference between a great horror movie (this one) & a great slasher movie (nightmare on elm street & Friday the 13th)

LMAO. People claim there's a fine line between madness and genius when they haven't been either.

@kcallen70 It must've been a prank. Cause when they re-released Star Wars, someone attached the trailer for Booty Call and upset a lot of parents.
